Every fall, independent pro shops across east-central Iowa call us about seasonal vehicle storage lifts, and almost every one of those calls eventually turns into a question about the automotive lift hydraulic pump configuration and how the unit is actually going to get off the truck. We’ve delivered lifts to shops with a dock-high loading bay and a forklift on standby, and we’ve delivered the exact same model to a shop with a gravel lot and nothing but a pallet jack. The pump and power unit setup you choose changes everything about that freight day, so let’s compare two real configurations side by side.

Configuration A: Single power unit, remote-mounted pump

The first common setup we deliver is a single power unit with the automotive lift hydraulic pump and motor mounted at one post, running hydraulic lines out to the cylinders on the other columns. This is the more common configuration for 4-post storage lifts and tends to ship as one crated unit with the power unit bolted to the frame, which simplifies freight handling considerably.

For shops without a loading dock, this matters. A single crate with an integrated power unit can often be broken down and moved section by section with a pallet jack and a couple of strong backs, whereas a split shipment with a separate hydraulic pump crate adds a second delivery to track and unload. The tradeoff is hose run length — on wider lifts, the pump has to push fluid further to the far cylinders, which can mean slightly slower rise time on that side if the flow valve isn’t matched correctly during setup.

Configuration B: Independent hydraulic pump with reservoir, shipped separately

The second setup, more common on heavier-duty or electric-over-hydraulic storage lifts, ships the hydraulic pump and reservoir as its own crate, separate from the columns and cylinders. This is the configuration we see requested when a shop wants a flow valve with a built-in bypass so the lift automatically stops descending if power cuts out mid-lower — a genuine safety upgrade for unattended overnight storage bays.

Freight-wise, this means two deliveries or one truck with two distinct crated items, and it usually requires a forklift on the receiving end because the pump-and-reservoir assembly, while smaller than the lift columns, is dense and awkward to hand-truck alone. Shops in east-central Iowa without dock access sometimes underestimate this and end up needing to arrange forklift rental same-day, which adds cost and delay right when you want the lift operational before winter storage season hits.

Freight logistics: what actually shows up on the truck

Regardless of which configuration you choose, freight for a 4-post or 2-post lift typically arrives on a flatbed or box truck, and the automotive lift hydraulic pump component is almost always the heaviest single item to maneuver even though it’s not the biggest by dimension. We tell every shop to confirm liftgate service on the freight quote if they don’t have a dock, because a flatbed with no liftgate and no forklift on site means the driver simply won’t unload it.

We’ve had east-central Iowa shops get caught off guard by this more than once — the truck shows up, the driver can’t legally unload without proper equipment on the receiving end, and the delivery gets rescheduled, sometimes pushing installation back a full week during the busiest storage season of the year. Confirming forklift or liftgate availability before the truck leaves our dock is a five-minute phone call that saves that entire headache.

Unloading configuration A on-site

With the single-power-unit setup, unloading is more forgiving. Most shops can get by with a pallet jack on smooth concrete, though we still recommend having a second set of hands and, if your lot is gravel or uneven like a lot of rural east-central Iowa properties, a forklift is genuinely worth arranging rather than fighting a pallet jack across ruts with a lift frame on it.

Once it’s off the truck, moving the crate into position near the install site is the next challenge — these frames are long, and doorways or tight aisles in older shop buildings can be the actual bottleneck, not the freight delivery itself. We walk through door widths and turning radius during the quote process specifically to avoid a crate that arrives fine but won’t fit through the bay door.

Unloading configuration B on-site

The separate pump-and-reservoir crate in configuration B is smaller but denser, and shops sometimes assume that means it’s easier to handle — it isn’t. Dropping this crate wrong, or letting it tip during a manual unload, risks damaging the internal flow valve and bypass components before the unit is even installed, which is a warranty headache nobody wants during storage season.

We recommend forklift handling for this piece specifically, even if the columns and cylinders in the same shipment get pallet-jacked. It’s a small investment of coordination that protects the most expensive single component in the whole lift system. If your shop already owns a forklift for parts handling, this configuration is actually the easier of the two once it’s off the truck.

Which configuration fits your shop

If your east-central Iowa shop has a loading dock, an on-site forklift, and wants the flow valve bypass safety feature for unattended overnight storage, configuration B is worth the extra freight coordination. If you’re running lean without dock access and need the simplest possible delivery day, configuration A with the integrated power unit and automotive lift hydraulic pump mounted directly to the frame is the lower-friction choice.
