We walked a collector in western Illinois through exactly that process last year — from the day the lift was installed in a pole barn built for storage, not service, through the first wheel bearing job six months later. Measuring the Barn Before the Motor Ever Turns On

Before we even talked motor specs, we made the collector measure his pole barn ceiling in three places, not just the center peak, because most post-frame buildings taper toward the eaves and a lift installed off-center will run out of headroom on one side before the other. His building had 14 feet at the ridge but closer to 11 feet 6 inches over the actual install footprint once we accounted for the truss bottom chord. That number, not the ridge height, is what determines whether a 9,000 lb 2-post lift with a car raised to full comfortable working height will clear the vehicle’s antenna, roof rack, or in his case, a removable hardtop he stores on his collector car during winter months.

We ended up recommending a shorter overall column height and running the vehicle to a mid-range height rather than full extension for most storage-and-swap tasks, which kept everything clear by nearly a foot. Choosing the Right Automotive Lift Motor for Occasional, Careful Use

A collector’s use case is nothing like a daily shop’s, and that changes what we recommend for an automotive lift motor even before duty cycle enters the conversation. Most collector lifts run a handful of cycles a week, not a day, so raw horsepower matters less than reliability after long periods of dormancy — a car sitting up on the lift for months at a time, then coming down once, then going back up for a wheel bearing service the following spring. A single-phase motor in the 2-3 horsepower range, common on residential 2-post and 4-post units, is plenty for this kind of work, and it’s the standard pairing on most BendPak and Atlas home-garage models we install.

The bigger risk for infrequent-use lifts isn’t motor sizing, it’s moisture and dust sitting on motor windings and contacts between uses. Pole barns without climate control see real humidity swings across an Iowa or Illinois winter, and we’ve pulled covers off motors that sat untouched for a season only to find corrosion starting on terminal connections. We recommend collectors cycle the lift empty once a month even when there’s no car to move, just to keep the motor and hydraulic seals from sitting static, and to catch a failing motor early rather than during the one week a year they actually need the lift for service work.

The First Real Service Job: Wheel Bearing Work Six Months In

Six months after install, the collector called us for his first real service job — a wheel bearing replacement on one of his stored vehicles, the kind of job that requires the car up at full height for an extended period while you press bearings and torque hub assemblies. This is where the ceiling clearance decisions from install day mattered again, because wheel bearing work often means pulling a wheel and hub assembly clear off the vehicle, and you need room above the vehicle for the technician to maneuver a torque wrench or press tool without ducking under a truss.

The lift performed exactly as sized, holding the vehicle steady at working height for the better part of an afternoon with no drift and no unusual motor noise. That’s worth mentioning because a motor that runs hot or hums under sustained load during a job like this is often the first sign of a problem, and it’s exactly the kind of complaint we hear from lift owners elsewhere — a motor that got hot during a lift, then started humming, then began smoking within a day. None of that happened here, and the difference wasn’s luck; it came down to correct motor sizing for the vehicle weight and not running the automotive lift motor at the edge of its rated duty cycle.

What We’d Tell Any Collector Starting From Zero

If we were starting this project over, we’d measure ceiling height in more than three places and we’d ask about door swing before ever discussing lift brand or motor horsepower. Those two physical constraints decide more about which lift fits a storage building than any spec sheet does. We’d also push harder on getting the concrete slab specified correctly before pouring, since anchoring requirements for a 2-post lift are unforgiving after the fact, and a slab poured for storage alone is often not rated for lift anchoring without additional reinforcement.

We’d also tell any collector to think about future service needs, not just current ones. This owner didn’t expect to need wheel bearing service on a stored car within the first year, but vehicles that sit do develop issues, and having a lift rated and positioned for real service work — not just parking — paid off. A lift bought purely for storage height, with a clearance margin measured for the car alone and nothing else, would have forced an awkward workaround the day real service work came up.

Why Motor Reliability Matters More Than Horsepower on Paper

It’s tempting to shop for an automotive lift motor by horsepower number alone, the way people shop for a truck by towing capacity. But for a collector’s use case, reliability after idle periods and consistent starting torque under a static load matter far more than an extra half horsepower most collector vehicles will never require. We’ve seen higher-horsepower motors fail faster in intermittent-use settings simply because they weren’t matched to how the lift was actually going to be used, while a correctly sized 2-3 horsepower motor on a quality residential lift outlasts expectations by years.

This is also why we push customers toward name-brand motor and hydraulic packages rather than off-brand replacements when a motor does eventually need service. A mismatched aftermarket motor swapped in without checking amp draw, RPM rating, and starting torque against the original spec plate is one of the most common causes of the loud humming and overheating failures we get called about — sometimes the exact motor pulled off the shelf simply wasn’t right for that lift’s load in the first place.

Getting the Full Install Right the First Time

Looking back on this collector’s first year, the automotive lift motor itself was never the weak link — the planning around ceiling clearance, door swing, and slab prep was where the real risk lived. A correctly specified motor on a poorly measured install will still frustrate an owner, while a well-planned install forgives a lot of minor spec quibbles. That’s the order we push every customer, collector or shop owner, to think in: space and structure first, motor and lift model second.
