Franchise operators come to us with a floor plan and a target open date, and the lift is usually the biggest single equipment purchase in the bay — but the motor, the electrical run to power it, and the install labor all add up separately from the lift itself. Step One: Picking the Right Lift and Motor Spec for Volume

Quick-lube bays run a different duty cycle than a general repair shop — more cycles per day, faster up-and-down, less time between vehicles. That means the automotive lift motor on your chosen lift needs to be rated for frequent cycling, not just peak capacity. A lift that can technically hold 9,000 lbs. but was designed for occasional use in a body shop isn’t the same product as one built for forty or fifty cycles a day in a lube bay.

For most quick-lube franchises, a two-post lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb. range with a 3-horsepower motor running in the low twenties of amps is a common, well-proven spec. Franchise brands often have an approved equipment list, but even within that list there’s variance in motor duty rating. Step Two: Budgeting the Lift Itself

The lift package — columns, arms, hydraulic cylinder, and the automotive lift motor as a unit — is typically the single largest equipment cost in a quick-lube build-out, generally running into the several-thousand-dollar range per bay depending on capacity and brand. Franchise operators sometimes try to save money here by buying used or off-brand equipment, but we’d caution against it for a quick-lube specifically because of cycle count. A motor that’s marginal will show its weakness fast under fifty daily cycles, not slowly over years like it might in a low-volume shop. Paying more upfront for a proven motor and drivetrain usually pencils out cheaper than replacing a burned-out motor eighteen months into operation, on top of the lost bay-days while it’s down.

Step Three: Electrical Work Before the Lift Ever Arrives

Every automotive lift motor needs a dedicated circuit sized to its voltage and amperage draw, and this is where build-out sequencing really matters. If your electrical contractor runs conduit and panels before final lift selection, you risk having the wrong circuit for the motor you eventually choose. We recommend locking in your lift and motor spec before the electrical rough-in, not after, so the contractor can size wire gauge and breaker correctly the first time.

For a typical 3-horsepower motor drawing in the low twenties of amps, that’s usually a straightforward 230-volt single-phase circuit, but some larger commercial lifts spec three-phase power, which many strip-mall and standalone quick-lube buildings don’t have without a costly service upgrade. Confirming this early avoids a change order mid-build that can push your open date back weeks, which matters a lot when a franchise’s marketing launch is already scheduled.

Step Four: Concrete and Anchoring Requirements

Before any lift with its automotive lift motor goes in, your concrete needs to meet the manufacturer’s thickness and cure-time specs for the anchor bolts. This is frequently the step that gets rushed in a build-out timeline because everyone wants the bay operational, but anchoring into concrete that hasn’t cured long enough, or that’s too thin for the lift’s rated capacity, is both a safety issue and a warranty voider.

In east-central Iowa’s climate, pour timing also has to account for temperature and cure conditions, especially on shoulder-season builds in spring and fall. A commercial-grade automotive lift motor from Rotary or Challenger typically carries a multi-year warranty on the drivetrain, but that warranty depends on documented maintenance — periodic lubrication, hydraulic fluid checks, and electrical connection inspections. For a quick-lube franchise running high daily cycle counts, we generally recommend a service visit every six months rather than the annual schedule that’s fine for a lower-volume shop.

Building this into your operating budget from day one, rather than treating maintenance as an afterthought, is what separates a lift motor that lasts a decade from one that fails at year two.
