Start With the Work You Actually Do, Not the Capacity Number
Wheel bearing service is a good example of why the job drives the lift choice. To press a hub out you need the wheel off, the knuckle accessible, and enough room under the vehicle to swing a hammer and set up a press or a slide hammer. A four-post lift with runways under the tires is useless for that — the wheels are sitting on the deck. A mid-rise scissor gets the car up but often blocks the exact area you need. A two-post picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and leaves all four corners hanging free, which is why it is the default for anything involving suspension, brakes, or bearings.
So before you compare capacities, write down your five most common jobs. If they involve wheels off, suspension, exhaust, or transmission work, you want a two post. If they are mostly oil changes and winter storage, a four-post might serve you better. Our western Illinois caller had brakes, bearings, and shocks on his list, so the decision made itself. Capacity came second: his heaviest vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup at roughly seven thousand pounds, so a nine- or ten-thousand-pound unit gave him comfortable margin. Ceiling, Slab, and Power: The Three Things That Kill Home Installs
Ceiling height is the first hard limit. Most overhead-style automotive two post lifts want roughly 145 to 150 inches of clear height to the bottom of the crossbar. A pole building with 12-foot sidewalls has 144 inches at the wall and often less under a truss or a girt, so many home shops end up with a baseplate model instead. Baseplate lifts run the cables and hose through a low channel on the floor between the columns and fit comfortably under a 12-foot ceiling. The floor channel is mildly annoying with a creeper and completely irrelevant otherwise.
Slab thickness is the second. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is the usual minimum for a ten-thousand-pound unit, and “I think it’s four, maybe five” is not a spec. We core-drill to verify, and when a slab comes up short we cut and pour footing pads under each column. If you are building a new shop, spec six inches of reinforced concrete where the lift will sit and thank yourself later. Third is power: most home-shop units run on 220V single phase and want a dedicated 30-amp circuit at the column. If your only 220 outlet is a welder receptacle across the building, add an electrician to your budget. Between those three items, most first-time buyers of automotive two post lifts spend more on site prep than they expected and nothing on regret.
Overhead vs. Baseplate for a Home Garage
We get asked which one is “better,” and the honest answer is neither. They lift the same weight with the same lock mechanisms and the same safety factors. The difference is where the equalization system lives. Overhead units keep the floor completely clear, which is genuinely nicer if you roll a transmission jack or work on your back a lot. They also put the cables and hose up where you can inspect them by eye without bending over, which matters more than people expect.
Baseplate units trade the clean floor for lower height requirement and usually a slightly lower purchase price. In a home garage with a 10- or 12-foot ceiling, that is often the only option that lets a full-size truck get all the way up. There is one more wrinkle worth knowing: on a baseplate model, the floor channel takes abuse from dropped tools, rolling toolboxes, and tire dollies, so its cables can wear faster than an overhead unit’s if you are careless. We had a home-shop customer in eastern Iowa who ran over his floor channel with a loaded engine hoist enough times to flatten the cover and start chafing a cable. Both families of automotive two post lifts are safe when maintained; the baseplate design just asks for a little more attention to what you drag across the floor.
How Equalizer Cables Actually Work
This is the part most first-time owners never learn, and it is the single most important maintenance item on the lift. The hydraulic cylinder or cylinders raise the carriages. The steel equalizer cables do not carry the vehicle’s weight — their job is to keep both carriages at the same height so the lift stays level. They run from one carriage, up and over sheaves at the top of the column, across the crossbar or through the floor channel, and down to the other carriage. If a cable stretches, one side drifts low and the vehicle tilts. If a cable breaks, that side drops until the mechanical safety locks catch it, which is precisely why the locks exist and why you never rely on cables as a safety device.
Separately, there is a small lock release cable — sometimes air line instead — that disengages the locks when you want to lower. That one is thinner, gets kinked, and fails far more often than the equalizer cables. A snapped lock cable does not drop your car; it just means one column will not release, and you are stuck with a vehicle in the air until it is fixed. Cable Inspection and Replacement Intervals That Make Sense

Every time you use the lift: glance at both cables for obvious slack, kinks, or a strand poking out, and listen for uneven lock engagement as it rises. Monthly: run a rag along the accessible length of each cable — a rag snags on broken wires long before your eye finds them. Wear a glove. Check cable tension by feel and confirm both carriages sit at equal height with the lift raised to working level.
Annually: do a real inspection. Look at the sheaves for grooving and free rotation, check the cable ends and thimbles for corrosion and deformation, and inspect the section that wraps the sheave, which wears fastest and hides best. Replacement criteria are straightforward — replace immediately if you find six or more broken wires in one lay, three broken wires in one strand, any kink or bird cage, visible core protrusion, corrosion pitting, or measurable diameter reduction. Replace cables in matched pairs, never one at a time, and re-tension and re-level after installation.
