Automotive two post lifts change the way a collector works on cars, and we watched that happen over a single year with a gentleman outside Cedar Rapids who keeps six vehicles in a heated shop behind his house. He called us in early spring because he had an oil pan gasket weeping on a 1970s coupe and he was tired of crawling under jack stands to chase it. We set the anchors, ran the power, trained him on the arms, and then stayed in touch as he put the first year of hours on the equipment. What follows is the honest version of that year — the install decisions, the first real repair job, and the cable inspection habits that came out of it. The Shop Before the Lift: Six Cars and a Creeper

Before any of this, his shop was a 32×44 outbuilding with a good concrete pour, a decent air compressor, and absolutely no way to get a car more than sixteen inches off the floor. He had a low-profile floor jack, four stands, and a creeper with one wheel that dragged. That works fine for a brake job. It does not work when you need to drop an oil pan on a car that has never had the pan off in fifty years and every bolt is going to fight you. He told us he had put off the gasket job for two summers because the idea of working overhead at eighteen inches of clearance made him quit before he started.

That is the honest reason most collectors in our part of Iowa finally buy. It is not the shine of new equipment. It is one specific job that keeps getting deferred. When we walked the building with him, we measured 12 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the trusses, which put a clearfloor overhead model right at the edge of comfortable. We talked through the baseplate alternative and he did not love the idea of a bar across the floor where he pushes cars in and out. Ceiling height, floor slab thickness, and door swing decide more of these projects than capacity ratings do, and we would rather have that conversation at the tape measure stage than after a truck shows up.

Why We Sized It at 10,000 Pounds and Not More

His heaviest vehicle was a full-size pickup at roughly 6,400 pounds, and everything else in the collection sat between 3,200 and 4,100. People assume more capacity is always better, and with automotive two post lifts that assumption costs money without buying much. A 12,000 or 15,000 pound unit brings taller columns, heavier carriages, longer arms, and a bigger footprint. If you are never going to put a dually or a box truck on it, you are paying for steel you will not load.

We landed on a 10,000 pound asymmetric clearfloor with three-stage front arms. Asymmetric matters more for a collector than most people expect. The columns rotate slightly, the vehicle sits back in the bay, and the doors open without kissing the posts — which is exactly what you want on cars with long doors and original paint. Three-stage front arms let him reach the frame pinch welds on low cars without stacking adapter blocks into an unstable tower. We also spec’d taller screw-pad adapters, because unibody collector cars sit low and the standard pad stack rarely reaches. Installation Day and the Concrete Question

The slab was the one thing we could not confirm from photos. He thought it was six inches. We cored a test hole near the planned column location and found just over five inches of decent-strength concrete over compacted fill, which is workable but not generous. Manufacturers generally want a minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 pound unit, and we like more margin than the minimum when a collector car is going overhead.

We set both columns on the measured centerline, drilled with a rotary hammer, blew the holes clean twice, and torqued the anchors to spec with a calibrated wrench rather than by feel. Shims went under one column to bring the carriages level within tolerance, because his floor had about a quarter inch of fall toward the overhead door. Then we ran the equalization cables, set the lock ladders even, cycled the unit empty a dozen times, and loaded it with his heaviest truck for the final check. Total install ran most of a day. That afternoon we walked him through the arm restraints, the manual lock release, and the one habit that matters more than any other on automotive two post lifts: never lower onto locks you have not visually confirmed are set.

The Oil Pan Gasket Job That Started It All

Three weeks after install he finally did the job he bought the equipment for. The coupe went up on the arms, he set the pads under the frame rails, raised it to chest height, dropped it onto the locks, and got to work standing up. He told us the pan bolts still fought him — a lift does not fix fifty-year-old fasteners — but that the whole job took a Saturday instead of the three miserable weekends he had budgeted for it.

The part he did not expect was the sequence. With the car at working height and the pan down, he could see oil weeping at the rear main area as well, something invisible from a creeper. He caught it, ordered a seal, and did both jobs in the same teardown. That is the real return on automotive two post lifts for a collector: not speed, but visibility. He also learned that raising a car with the pan off changes the drivetrain angle enough to matter, so he started blocking the transmission before going higher — a small habit that came from doing the work, not from reading the manual.

Cable Inspection: What We Told Him to Look For

The equalization cables on a two post unit do not carry the vehicle. The hydraulic cylinders do that. The cables keep the two carriages traveling together, and when they fail or stretch unevenly, the unit goes out of level and the locks stop engaging at the same rung. That is the failure mode that scares people, and it is entirely preventable with a flashlight and five minutes.

We told him to check three things monthly. First, broken wires — run a shop rag along the cable and see if it snags. A single broken strand is a warning; several in one lay length means replace now. Second, corrosion and flat spots where the cable rides the sheaves, especially at the top of the columns where dust and condensation collect in an unheated Iowa winter. Third, tension and level. Raise the carriages a couple of feet, look at both lock ladders, and confirm the dogs sit at the same rung. If one side rides high, the cables need adjusting before anything else. Replacement Intervals and What Actually Drives Them

People want a number. The honest answer is that cable life on automotive two post lifts depends far more on cycles and environment than on the calendar. A busy independent shop cycling a unit forty times a day will wear cables in three to five years. A collector who raises a car eight times a month may go well past ten years on the original set — provided the sheaves are true, the cables stay lubricated, and nothing gets kinked during a careless arm swing.

What we tell every customer is this: inspect monthly, have a qualified inspection annually, and replace on condition rather than on a date. Then plan financially for a set somewhere in the five-to-ten year window so it is not a surprise. Cables are one of the least expensive wear items on the entire machine relative to what they protect. We stock sets for most Rotary and Challenger models and can cross-reference by serial number if the tag is still legible. When his unit hits year five we will pull the sheaves, check the bearings, and decide together. Replacing preventively while the shop is empty beats replacing reactively with a customer car in the air, every single time.

What Year Two Looks Like in an Iowa Shop

Heading into his second year, the maintenance list has settled into something he can do himself. Grease the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins quarterly. Check hydraulic fluid level at the power unit and top off with the correct AW-32 rather than whatever is on the shelf. Wipe the columns and look for scoring on the slide surfaces. Verify anchor bolt torque annually — Iowa freeze-thaw cycles work on concrete, and an anchor that was 90 foot-pounds last spring may not be this spring. Cycle the lock release and listen for both dogs dropping cleanly.

He also added a second habit we recommend to every home and collector shop: a five-minute pre-use check before anything goes overhead. Arms swing free, restraints engage, pads are the right height, nothing is stored under the car. It takes less time than pulling a car into the bay.
