Shopping automotive two post lifts as a weekend hobbyist is genuinely confusing, and the model numbers are half the problem. A guy in Council Bluffs called us last winter with a browser full of tabs — an SPO12, a 9LC, a CL10V3, something called an XPR-10AS — and asked why three of them looked identical but the prices were a thousand dollars apart. He wanted to do coilovers and shock replacement on a couple of project cars in a two-and-a-half stall attached garage. We spent 20 minutes on the phone decoding what he was looking at, and by the end he knew exactly which spec sheet lines mattered. This is that conversation, written down as a checklist you can work through before you spend a dollar.

Step One: Decode the Model Number

Manufacturers all use different logic, but there is usually a capacity buried in the name. Rotary’s SPO12 is a Shockwave-capable Post, Overhead, 12,000 lbs. An SPOA10 is overhead, asymmetric, 10,000 lbs. Challenger’s CL10V3 is a 10,000 lb clearfloor in its third revision. BendPak’s XPR-10AS reads as 10,000 lbs, asymmetric — and the letters after the number tell you more than the number does. Atlas uses numbers like 9BP where BP means baseplate. The 9LC that Council Bluffs customer had bookmarked was a 9,000 lb clearfloor from a value brand.

The letters matter because they define what the equipment can physically do in your building. “O” or “OH” means an overhead beam carries the equalizer cables and hydraulic line, which keeps the floor clear but demands 11 to 12.5 feet of ceiling. “BP” or “FP” means baseplate or floorplate — cables and hose run in a low channel across the floor, so a 9-foot ceiling works, but you drive over that channel every time. “A” means asymmetric: columns rotated roughly 30 degrees with short front arms and long rear arms so you can open car doors with the vehicle up. “S” means symmetric, with equal-length arms and the vehicle centered between the columns, which is better for trucks and vans. Getting these three letters right eliminates most of the bad purchases we see on automotive two post lifts.

Step Two: Capacity, and Why 10K Is the Sweet Spot

Most hobbyists genuinely need less capacity than they buy. If the heaviest thing you touch is a 7,000 lb three-quarter-ton pickup, a 9,000 lb unit clears it with margin. But we still steer nearly every home-shop customer to a 10,000 lb model, and the reason is not the weight rating. It is everything that comes with it: thicker column steel, larger cylinders, better lock assemblies, and a parts supply chain that will still exist in fifteen years. The price delta between a 9K and a 10K from the same manufacturer is usually a few hundred dollars.

Where it gets interesting is above that. A 12,000 lb unit like the SPO12 has taller columns, wider arm reach, and enough capacity for a dually or a small box truck. A 14,000 or 15,000 lb model is a commercial decision, not a hobby one — it also needs 6 inches of good concrete and a taller ceiling. We had a customer in northern Missouri last year, a rural mail carrier putting a lot of miles on his own car, who insisted he only needed something that would not drop a vehicle. He was right, and a well-built 10K did the job. Do not confuse capacity with quality. Cheap automotive two post lifts at high ratings are more dangerous than good ones at modest ratings, because the rating is only as honest as the engineering behind it.

Step Three: Measure Your Ceiling Three Times

Write down four numbers: peak ceiling height, height to the lowest obstruction, garage door opening height, and height to the bottom of the opener rail or torsion spring. That last one kills more overhead-beam plans than anything else. A hobbyist with a 12-foot peak feels fine until we point out the sectional door track and opener hanging at 8 feet 6 inches in the middle of the bay.

For an overhead configuration, take the manufacturer’s overall height spec and add 3 inches of working room. A typical 10K clearfloor lists 11 feet 8 inches to 12 feet 2 inches overall. If your lowest obstruction is under 11 feet, go baseplate. If you are between 11 and 12 feet, we can sometimes fit an overhead by relocating a light or a heater flue, and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the trouble. Also check maximum rise: most units lift 69 to 78 inches under the pads. For suspension and shock work, rise matters less than you think — you want the vehicle at chest height with the wheels off, not at the ceiling. A guy pulling struts all weekend cares far more about arm reach and pad adjustability than about the last four inches of travel. Step Four: Arms, Pads, and Suspension Work

This is the section that mattered most to our Council Bluffs hobbyist. If your projects are lowered cars, sports cars, or anything with pinch welds close to the ground, low-profile arms are not optional. Standard arms sit 4.5 to 5.5 inches at the pad. Low-profile three-stage arms drop to 3.5 inches or less and telescope farther, which lets you reach factory lift points on a long-wheelbase sedan and still tuck under a lowered coupe.

Pad options are the cheap upgrade nobody buys until they need it. Screw-up adapters in 3-inch and 6-inch heights let you reach frame rails on a truck or clear rocker panels on a unibody. Truck adapters, stackable pucks, and polyurethane pads for frame contact all cost a modest amount and save your rocker panels. For shock and coilover work specifically, ask about pad clearance to the wheel well when the suspension is fully extended — you need room to swing a spring compressor. Also look at the arm restraint design: gear-driven restraints hold better than the old pin-and-notch style, and on automotive two post lifts the restraint is what keeps an arm from swinging out when you are wrenching hard on a rusted strut bolt. Step Five: Concrete, Anchors, and Power

Core the slab or find the pour records. A 10,000 lb unit wants 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum, measured, not guessed. Attached garages built in the 1970s and 80s are frequently 3.5 inches with a weak base, and newer pole buildings can be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. We had a customer with a 16-foot door and a loft on one side who thought he had 5 inches and turned out to have less in spots. The fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column, roughly 4 by 5 feet and a foot deep, cured 28 days.

Radiant floor heat is the other landmine. If there is PEX in the slab you need the layout drawing or a thermal scan before drilling, because an anchor through a heat loop turns a good weekend into a very expensive one. Power is simpler: most single-phase power units on home-shop units want a dedicated 220V circuit at 30 amps, and a 20-amp circuit will trip under load with a heavy vehicle. Run the circuit before the equipment arrives. If you are in an unheated Iowa garage, ask about cold-weather hydraulic fluid — standard fluid gets thick below freezing and the lift crawls on the first cycle of the morning. Step Six: New Versus Used

We get asked about used equipment constantly, and our answer depends on the brand. A used Rotary or Challenger from a shop that maintained it can be a genuinely good buy — those columns last decades and parts are available. A used off-brand unit whose manufacturer no longer exists is a boat anchor, because when a cable stretches or a lock cylinder fails you will not find the part. We have had customers spend more chasing parts for a mystery lift than a new one would have cost.

If you buy used, inspect in person: check cables for broken strands and corrosion at the swage fittings, cycle the locks and listen for all of them engaging together, look for cylinder weep at the rod seal, and check the column bases for cracking or rust-jacking at the anchors. Ask for the model and serial plate photo and send it to us before you commit — we can usually tell you in one phone call whether parts still exist. Price-wise, used commercial automotive two post lifts often land in the low-to-mid thousands installed, while new entry-level home units start in a similar range and new commercial-grade equipment runs meaningfully higher. Step Seven: The Final Checklist Before You Buy

Print this and fill it in. Heaviest vehicle weight and wheelbase. Lowest ceiling obstruction. Door opening height. Bay width available and bay length. Slab thickness, age, and whether there is radiant tubing. Available voltage, phase, and amps, plus distance to the panel. Symmetric or asymmetric based on what you drive. Overhead or baseplate based on your ceiling. Standard or low-profile arms based on ride height. Whether you need an installer or plan to do it yourself.

That last one deserves a straight answer. Plenty of capable hobbyists set their own equipment and do it correctly. But drilling anchors into unverified concrete, standing 700 lb columns, and bleeding a hydraulic system with cable equalization set right is real work, and getting the column plumb wrong by a degree shows up as uneven lock engagement forever.
