Start With the Vehicle, Not the Model Number
The single most common mistake we see is a buyer picking a capacity because it sounds impressive. A 15,000 lb unit in a home garage is almost always the wrong answer — it’s taller, heavier, needs more concrete, and costs meaningfully more than what the job requires. Write down the heaviest vehicle you’ll ever put on it. Not the one you might buy someday. The one in your driveway right now, plus maybe one step up. A half-ton crew cab with a topper and a full tank runs around 6,500 to 7,000 lb. A three-quarter-ton diesel gets you to 8,000 or 9,000. A daily-driven sedan and a project car? You’re under 5,000 lb combined per vehicle, easily.
That number drives everything downstream. That’s where baseplate designs earn their keep. A baseplate model routes the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a floor-mounted plate between the columns instead of an overhead crossbeam, so overall height drops into the 9’6″ to 11′ range on most units. You drive over a low ridge in the floor, which is a minor annoyance and a real one if you’re rolling a transmission jack across it constantly. But for a home garage with limited headroom, baseplate is frequently the only workable geometry. One buyer we worked with in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch ceiling maximum and no overhead option at all — baseplate was the entire conversation. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric: What It Actually Changes
The columns on a symmetric unit face each other straight on, and the four arms are equal length. The result is that the door opening clears the column and you can actually get in and out of the car while it’s on the lift. Two-stage arms on a budget unit will leave you unable to reach the front pickup points on a sports car at all. Ask for the collapsed pad height spec, usually somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5 inches on a decent unit.
For brake and rotor work specifically, you want two things: enough lift height that you’re standing upright with the wheel at chest level, and screw-up adapter pads with enough travel to clear plastic body cladding. Rotor swaps mean you’re pulling caliper brackets, hanging calipers, sometimes fighting rust-welded rotors with a dead-blow hammer. Every one of those motions applies lateral force. A properly loaded and locked unit doesn’t care, but a car sitting on marginal pads with the arms not fully seated in the restraint gear absolutely does. Set the pads on the manufacturer’s designated points, raise a few inches, shake the vehicle deliberately, then go the rest of the way up. We tell every customer that, and we mean it.
Concrete Specs: The Requirement Nobody Wants to Hear
Every 10,000 lb two-post unit on the market specifies minimum concrete: generally 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI or better, cured a minimum of 28 days, and not within a certain distance of a seam or edge. That’s not a suggestion from the manufacturer’s legal department. The anchors transfer enormous overturning moment into the slab, and a thin or cracked pour is exactly how a column walks.
Here’s the honest part: most residential garage slabs in Iowa were poured at four inches with no rebar and questionable subgrade prep. Sometimes they’re fine. Sometimes they’re three and a half inches over frost-heaved fill. We had a customer in northern Missouri who thought he had five inches and wasn’t certain — we told him to core-drill a test hole in an out-of-the-way spot before ordering anything, because finding out after the anchors are set is the expensive version. If your slab comes up short, the fix is a cutout and a reinforced pad pour, typically four to five feet square by eight to twelve inches deep at each column. It adds cost and a couple weeks of cure time, but it’s the difference between a lift you trust and one you don’t. What Installation Actually Involves
A two-post install in a prepped garage is a one-day job for a two-person crew, sometimes less. Columns get set and squared, anchors drilled and torqued to spec, the overhead or baseplate assembly connected, hydraulic lines run, power unit mounted and wired, system bled, then a full cycle test with the safety locks engaged at every position.
