The Site Visit: Measuring Before Recommending
We do not quote a two-post off a phone call description of a building. Too many variables lie. In this case we drove out with a tape, a hammer drill, and a laser, and the measurements told a different story than the mechanic’s estimate had. He’d said “about ten feet.” The actual clear height under the low purlin was 9 feet 8 inches, and the ceiling stepped down another few inches where a conduit run crossed the bay. That immediately killed the overhead option for anything with a 10,000 lb rating, because those units generally want somewhere north of 11 feet 6 inches to the bottom of the crossbar assembly.
The slab surprised us in a good way. Test-drilled at three points across the intended footprint, it came back at a consistent 5-plus inches with no radiant tubing and no rebar in the way of the anchor pattern. That’s better than half the buildings we drill in rural Iowa, where four inches is aspirational. We also mapped the expansion joints, because anchors too close to a joint or a slab edge don’t hold, and we found we could set both columns with comfortable clearance. Why Baseplate Won This Job
Baseplate two-post units route the equalizer cables and the hydraulic line through a low channel that sits on the floor between the columns, instead of over the top through an overhead bridge. That single design change is what lets them live under a low ceiling. On this job it meant the mechanic could run a 10,000 lb unit in a bay where an overhead configuration physically would not have fit — and it also meant he could raise a tall van to full height and open the rear doors without a crossbar in the way.
The other advantage nobody mentions until they’ve owned one: baseplate columns are simpler to align during install. There’s no bridge to shim level across the top, no fussing to get the overhead assembly square while two columns are standing free. You plumb each column independently, anchor, then set the floor cover and the cables. For a one-man shop that may eventually relocate — and mobile mechanics relocate — that’s a real benefit. Pulling a baseplate unit and resetting it in a new building is a shorter job than doing the same with an overhead. We told him that plainly, because we’d rather he buys the configuration he can live with for fifteen years than the one that photographs better. The Honest Downsides of a Floor Channel
We are not going to pretend the floor cover is nothing. It’s an obstruction, it’s maybe two inches tall depending on the model, and everything you roll across the bay hits it. Transmission jack, oil drain, tire cart, creeper — all of it. In a busy general repair shop where techs are moving heavy equipment across the bay dozens of times a day, that friction adds up and we’ll usually steer toward overhead if the ceiling allows. For a solo operator doing state inspections and brake work, the cover is a minor annoyance that becomes muscle memory in a week.
There’s a maintenance angle too. The cover keeps debris off the cables, but it also hides them, so people forget they exist. On a baseplate unit we tell owners to pull that cover once a year, blow it out, and put a light on the full length of both equalizer cables looking for broken strands, flat spots, and corrosion where the cable rides the sheaves. Cables are a matched-set replacement item and they are not expensive relative to the consequences of ignoring them. The other item to watch is the hydraulic line running through the channel — it takes abuse from rolling equipment over time, and a chafed hose under pressure makes a mess of a Tuesday.
Capacity and Arm Geometry for Inspection Work
Annual state inspection work means a huge variety of vehicles through one bay in a day: a compact sedan, a minivan, a work van, a half-ton pickup, occasionally something heavier. That variety drives two spec decisions. First, capacity. We landed on 10,000 lb rather than 9,000, for the same reason we usually do — the price delta is small and modern vehicles keep gaining weight. His heaviest regular customer vehicle was around 7,000 lb, which leaves comfortable margin at 10K and thinner margin at 9K once you account for uneven loading.
Second, arm geometry. Asymmetric arms — short in front, longer in back, with the columns rotated slightly — let you position a passenger car far enough back that the driver’s door clears the column. For a shop where a customer’s car comes in, gets inspected, and goes out, being able to open a door on the lift matters every single time. We also specified low-profile front arms with a good set of stackable adapters, because sedans and crossovers with plastic aero trays don’t tolerate a tall pad under the pinch weld. Install Day: What Actually Happened
The install ran a little over half a day, which is typical for a straightforward baseplate job with good concrete. Sequence: mark the layout from the manufacturer’s template, confirm anchor locations clear the expansion joints, drill and blow out the holes, set the driver-side column plumb, anchor and torque to spec, repeat on the passenger side, then measure the diagonal to verify square. The floor channel and cables went in next, followed by the power unit, hydraulic lines, and electrical.
Two things came up. The building’s existing 120V circuit wasn’t going to run the power unit properly, so an electrician pulled a dedicated 220V single-phase line — a common and predictable extra cost in a converted farm or metal building that nobody budgets for. And the intended column position put the passenger-side arm swing uncomfortably close to a support post, so we shifted the whole footprint about eight inches toward the door. That’s exactly why we mark and dry-fit before drilling a single hole. After anchoring we cycled the unit empty a dozen times, bled the hydraulics, verified both locks engaged simultaneously at every ladder position, and load-tested with a vehicle before we handed it over. That final verification is not optional on automotive two post lifts, and any installer who skips it should worry you.
What Changed for His Business
The economics of a mobile operation are strange. Working out of a van, his labor rate had a ceiling because his capability had a ceiling — you can only do so much on a gravel driveway with jack stands and daylight. Adding a bay with a two-post didn’t just make existing work faster, it opened whole categories he’d been turning away. Exhaust work. Fuel pumps. Anything requiring both hands overhead and the vehicle held reliably at chest height. State inspections went from a slow crawl-under to a five-minute walk-around at eye level.
He kept the van and kept the mobile route, which we think was smart. Now the van handles diagnostics and roadside work and the shop handles anything that needs the equipment. Utilization on the lift is maybe three or four vehicles a day, which is nowhere near the duty cycle of a dealership bay — meaning the unit will likely outlast his interest in turning wrenches. That’s the case for buying a quality unit even at modest volume: the wear items are cheap and available, the structure lasts decades, and resale on a known brand with a legible data plate stays reasonable.
