When a city or county fleet shop calls us about automotive two post lifts, the conversation almost never starts with the lift itself. It starts with the building. We install and service lifts across Iowa out of our shop in Ames, and the fleet garages we walk into were usually poured in the 1970s for pickups and mowers, then asked to swallow one-ton service trucks, ambulances, and squad cars with heavy brake packages. A safety-first walkthrough answers the questions that actually decide whether a project goes smoothly: how thick is the slab, how high is the lowest obstruction, where does the power come from, and how does a technician move around the bay with a rotor in each hand. This is that walkthrough, in the order we do it.

Why fleet brake work drives the lift decision
A municipal shop lives on brake jobs. Squad cars run hard and short, garbage trucks and plow rigs stop with a lot of mass behind them, and every one of those vehicles needs rotors, pads, calipers, and hardware on a schedule. That work happens at chest height with the wheels off, which is exactly what a two-post does better than anything else in the building. A four-post is superb for storage and alignment, but you cannot pull a wheel on a runway lift without a rolling jack, and rolling jacks add steps to a job your technicians do fifteen times a week.
So when we spec automotive two post lifts for a fleet, we start with the heaviest thing that will ever go on it, not the average vehicle. A shop that mostly services half-ton pickups but occasionally lifts a loaded utility body needs more than the 10,000 lb entry point. We usually land those shops on a 12,000 or 15,000 lb asymmetric or symmetric column set, depending on whether they want the door-swing benefit of asymmetric arms or the straight-through loading of symmetric. If ambulances and cab-chassis trucks are in the rotation, we start talking about 18,000 lb and above, and the conversation shifts to wheelbase and arm reach rather than raw capacity. Getting that right on day one is far cheaper than discovering the limits with a truck in the air.
The concrete question comes first
Every install we have ever had to pause came back to concrete. Manufacturers publish minimums for a reason: a typical 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post wants roughly four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier columns want six inches or more. Fleet garages are notorious for surprises. We have cored slabs that measured a healthy six inches at the door and three and a half inches twenty feet in where an old wash bay was patched. We have found trench drains, radiant heat tubing, conduit runs, and buried footings exactly where an anchor needed to go.
That is why a core sample or at minimum a drilled test hole is part of our site survey, not an optional add-on. If the slab is thin or cracked, the fix is not exotic — we cut out a pad section, dig down, and pour a properly sized and cured footing for each column. It adds a week of cure time and some cost, but it is the difference between anchors that hold and anchors that walk. One central Iowa municipal shop we worked with wanted three automotive two post lifts in a row along one wall; the survey showed acceptable concrete at two locations and a buried grease-pit cap at the third, so we shifted the layout eight feet and saved them an excavation. That is what the survey buys you: information before the concrete saw comes out.
Overhead clearance, doors, and the ceiling you forgot about
The second measurement we take is vertical. A clearfloor two-post carries its equalization cable and hydraulic line through an overhead beam, and that beam typically sits somewhere between eleven and twelve and a half feet up depending on the model. Fleet buildings tend to have sprinkler heads, unit heaters, air reels, exhaust drops, radiant tube heaters, and coiled electrical exactly at that height. We measure to the lowest obstruction in the swing path, not to the deck.
When the ceiling will not cooperate, a baseplate model solves it. Baseplate two-posts run the cable and hose through a channel across the floor, which frees up all the overhead space you have. The tradeoff is a low bump the tech steps over and a floor plate you have to keep clean. We have put baseplate columns in more than one Ames-area garage with twelve-foot walls and a heater hanging at ten and a half. Also check the overhead door: if the door track or an open panel sits lower than the columns, you either move the lift back or specify a shorter column. Finally, think about where the technician’s head goes. A tall tech under a raised truck with an overhead beam above him has less room than the spec sheet implies, and that matters when he is swinging a rotor loose.
Power, air, and the utilities nobody budgets for
A two-post power unit is not a big electrical load, but it does need dedicated attention. Most units ship as 208-240V single phase, and plenty of fleet shops have three-phase available, which we can spec instead for smoother motor life on high-cycle equipment. What trips projects up is not the voltage — it is that there is no circuit within reach of the column, and the electrician has to run conduit across a finished ceiling. We flag that in the survey so it lands in the same purchase order as the lift.
Air is the other one. Nearly every modern two-post uses an air-actuated lock release, so each column needs shop air at the power unit, usually a quarter-inch line at 30 PSI or better. If the compressor is on a timer or shut off overnight, the locks will not release in the morning and someone will call us thinking the lift failed. We also look at where the drop hoses and cord reels will hang once the lift is in, because a fleet tech doing brakes wants an impact and a light without walking around a column twice. Bay layout and traffic flow in a fleet garage
Fleet shops move vehicles constantly, and a lift that boxes in a bay costs real productivity. We lay out on paper first: column spacing, arm sweep, door approach, and the walking lane behind the columns. Standard bay width for a two-post is twelve feet, but fourteen gives a tech room to roll a brake lathe cart or a transmission jack past a raised truck without turning sideways. If the shop runs long vehicles, we check that the front arms can reach a proper lift point without hanging past the front tires, and that the rear of the vehicle clears the wall.
We also ask about what shares the bay. A parts cart, a rolling toolbox, a press, a used-oil drain — all of that has to live somewhere that is not under a raised vehicle. In the Ames-area shops we serve, the layouts that work best put the two-post columns roughly eighteen to twenty feet from the overhead door, with the electrical and air on the wall side and a clear four-foot lane on the open side. If you are adding two or three units, leave enough between them that two trucks can be up simultaneously with doors open. Installation day and commissioning
A straightforward two-post install with good concrete is a one-day job for our crew. We lay out and chalk the column positions, drill and set anchors to the manufacturer’s torque spec, plumb the columns, set the overhead or baseplate assembly, route the equalization cable, connect hydraulics and air, fill and bleed the power unit, and then cycle the lift under no load. After that comes the part that matters most: loaded testing and lock verification. We raise a real vehicle, engage the safety locks at multiple heights, confirm both carriages latch simultaneously, and adjust the equalization cable until the arms rise level.
Then we walk the shop through it. Where the lock release is, how to hear a proper lock engagement, how the arm restraints work, where the lift points are on their specific fleet vehicles, and what daily and monthly checks belong on the board. We leave the manual and the ALI-required load capacity and safety placards on the columns, because an unlabeled lift is a citation waiting to happen in a public facility. Keeping automotive two post lifts inspection-ready year after year
Municipal equipment gets audited in a way private shops sometimes do not, and that is a good thing for the technicians standing under it. ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, plus daily operator checks. In a fleet setting we recommend putting it on the same maintenance calendar as the fire extinguishers and the eyewash station so it never falls off. The daily check is quick: look at the cables for fraying or slack, listen for both locks catching, check the arm restraints for engagement, glance at the anchor bolts and the floor around them for cracking, and watch for oil on the floor under the power unit.
Wear parts are predictable. Equalization cables stretch and eventually fray, lift pads compress and tear, lock springs weaken, hydraulic hoses seep at the fittings, and swivel pins in the arms develop slop. Two things kill automotive two post lifts early: ignoring a cable that is starting to bird-cage, and letting salt-laden slush sit in the base of the columns all winter — a real issue on Iowa plow fleets.
