A small overlanding build shop in Davenport called us last spring with a problem that comes up constantly with automotive two post lifts: they wanted overhead clearfloor, and their building wouldn’t allow it. Their bread and butter is long-travel suspension work, CV axle and half-shaft replacement on lifted Tacomas, 4Runners, and Sprinter 4x4s, plus roof rack and rooftop tent installs. A lifted truck with a tent on top is tall. An overhead crossbar is a hard ceiling. This is a case study of that install — how we measured, why they ended up where they did, and what a builder should actually weigh between overhead and baseplate.

The Building: 11 Feet of Clear Height and a Lifted 4Runner Problem

The shop occupied half of a leased steel building on the west side of Davenport. Measured clear height to the bottom of the roof purlins was eleven feet two inches, with a sprinkler main running crossways about eight inches below that in one bay. Their tallest regular customer vehicle was a 4Runner on a three-inch lift with 34s and a hardshell rooftop tent — roughly seven feet six inches at the tent, sometimes more with a crossbar-mounted awning.

Run the math on an overhead configuration. A typical clearfloor two-post needs about twelve feet minimum to the crossbar, and manufacturers spec that for a reason: the crossbar carries the equalizer cables and hoses across the top. At eleven-two with a sprinkler in the way, the shop could have installed a low-ceiling overhead variant and capped rise at roughly forty-eight inches. Forty-eight inches of rise is useless for CV axle work — you’re still on your knees. This is the fork in the road for a lot of buyers of automotive two post lifts in leased Midwest buildings, and it’s better to face it during quoting than after a truck shows up on a truck. We told them what we tell everybody with sub-twelve-foot ceilings: baseplate, and stop fighting the building. Baseplate columns route the cables and hoses through a low channel across the floor between the posts, so there’s nothing overhead at all and full rise stays available.

Overhead vs Baseplate: The Honest Trade-Offs

Overhead clearfloor gives you a completely unobstructed floor. Nothing to roll a jack over, nothing to sweep around, nothing for a floor creeper to catch on. The overhead beam also gives you a natural place to hang the shutoff bar that stops the lift before a roof hits the ceiling. For a shop with fourteen feet of height doing normal passenger cars, overhead is the default and there’s not much to debate.

Baseplate trades that clean floor for vertical freedom. The floor channel on modern baseplate automotive two post lifts is low — usually under two inches — and ramped, so a transmission jack rolls over it without drama, but it is there, and you feel it with a low creeper. What you get in exchange is full rise in a building that can’t accommodate a crossbar, plus no risk of a lifted truck or a tall van contacting an overhead beam. There’s also an anchoring consideration people miss: baseplate designs transfer more overturning moment into the anchors because there’s no top beam tying the columns together. That means concrete quality matters even more. Our rule of thumb is a minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI slab for a 10,000 lb baseplate unit, and we prefer more. Why CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work Drives the Spec

Half-shaft replacement on an independent front suspension truck is a specific kind of job. You’re pulling an axle nut at hub height, separating a lower control arm or dropping a knuckle, and then persuading the inner joint out of the differential — usually with a pry bar and a slide hammer, and usually with fluid coming out somewhere. All of that happens with the suspension at full droop, which means the wheel is hanging low and you need clearance underneath it.

That’s the argument for maximum rise and for a two-post rather than a drive-on. On automotive two post lifts, the wheels hang free the moment the arms lift the frame, which is exactly the geometry you want for CV work. A four-post with runways under the tires keeps the suspension loaded, and you’d need a rolling jack and a bunch of repositioning to get the same access. For long-travel builds where the shop is also cycling coilovers and checking for CV plunge at full articulation, hanging suspension is not a convenience, it’s the whole job. The Davenport shop specified a 10,000 lb baseplate unit with three-stage front arms so they could reach forward frame points on Sprinters without over-extending, and asked for taller-than-standard adapter stacks because lifted trucks sit high and stock pads leave the arms at an awkward angle. Those adapters cost very little and they eliminated a daily annoyance.

The Install: Anchor Layout, Column Plumb, and the Sprinkler We Left Alone

Install ran a single day plus a return visit. Baseplate columns need a precise bay width because the floor channel is a fixed length, so the layout matters more than people expect. We chalked the pattern, checked it against the truck door swing on their tallest customer vehicle, and shifted the whole assembly nine inches to keep the channel out of the natural walking path from the parts room to the bench.

Anchoring was straightforward on five and a half inches of clean slab. We drilled, blew the holes out properly — that step gets skipped constantly and it’s the number one cause of anchors that pull later — and torqued to manufacturer spec in sequence. Column plumb is the detail that separates a lift that runs quietly for fifteen years from one that chews carriage slides. We shimmed both columns and rechecked plumb after the first ten full cycles under load, which is when settling shows up. Because we went baseplate, the sprinkler main stayed exactly where it was. No fire system modifications, no landlord conversation, no inspection re-approval. For a leased building that alone justified the configuration choice. What It Cost and How the Numbers Penciled Out

We don’t publish exact pricing, but here’s the honest shape of it. A quality 10,000 lb baseplate two-post from a name-brand manufacturer lands in the mid four figures for equipment. Professional install with anchors, plumb verification, hydraulic bleed, and load testing typically adds a low four-figure amount depending on drive time and whether concrete work is needed. Concrete cut-and-pour, if your slab fails the core test, is its own line item and varies a lot by how much you need.

Where builders get burned is buying the cheapest import unit online, self-installing, and then discovering the cables aren’t a stocked size, the cylinder seals aren’t available, and the manufacturer’s tech support is an email address that answers in nine days. We stock cables, cylinders, and power units for the brands we sell, and that’s not a sales line — it’s the difference between a bay down for two days and a bay down for three weeks. The Davenport shop ran a simple calculation: at their labor rate, three half-shaft jobs a week done an hour faster each paid for the equipment inside a year, before counting the suspension work they could now quote confidently. That’s typically how automotive two post lifts pencil out for a small builder. The lift isn’t a cost center, it’s a throughput multiplier, and the payback window is usually shorter than owners expect.

Six Months Later: What the Builder Would Change

We checked in after six months. The floor channel has been a non-issue — one tech mentioned catching a creeper wheel a couple of times in the first week and then adapting. Full rise has been used constantly, and they’ve taken in three Sprinter 4×4 jobs they would have had to send elsewhere with a low-rise overhead setup.

Two things they’d do differently. First, they’d have ordered a second set of arm adapters up front. With lifted trucks and stock-height cars mixed through the bay, techs were constantly swapping stacks, and a duplicate set would have eliminated that. Second, they’d have run a dedicated 220V circuit with a disconnect closer to the columns instead of extending from an existing panel run — not a safety issue, just a convenience they now wish they’d paid for during construction. Everything else has held up. Anchor torque was still within spec at the six-month check, cables showed no fraying, and hydraulic fluid was clean. That’s what we’d expect from a properly installed unit on good concrete.
