Step One: Set a Real Budget Before You Look at Anything
Race budgets are strange. A team will spend heavily on a shock program and then try to hoist the car on the cheapest hardware they can find on the internet. We understand the logic — the lift doesn’t make the car faster — but the lift is the one piece of equipment in the shop that can kill somebody, and it’s also the one that determines whether a Tuesday-night fluid service takes forty minutes or two hours.
Realistically, entry-level two-post equipment in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class starts in the low four figures. That tier gets you a functional hoist with adequate steel, usually a baseplate design, and thin support. Mid-tier lands mid-four figures and buys you better arm hardware, real hydraulics, and a company that answers the phone. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger units in 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacities run into five figures with install. One buyer we talked to had $4,100 to spend, no interest in installation, and a 6,000 lb maximum vehicle — for him, an entry-level baseplate unit was genuinely the right call. Another told us he didn’t want to spend ten grand but would if we could justify it. That’s the honest conversation to have first, because budget determines which of the automotive two post lifts are even on your list.
Step Two: Weight and Wheelbase for a Race Car Are Deceiving
A dirt late model is around 2,300 pounds. A modified is lighter. A sprint car is barely 1,400. On paper you could hoist any of them with the smallest lift made. In practice, capacity is almost never the limiting spec for a race team — geometry is. Tube-frame cars have no pinch welds, no factory lift points, and very low ground clearance, so what you actually need is arms that swing to unusual positions with pads that get low enough to slide under a car sitting on 3 inches of clearance.
That’s why we tell race teams to check minimum pad height above everything else. Some 10,000 lb models start at 4 inches of pad height, which is useless under a lowered car; others get down near 3 inches with low-profile adapters. And most race shops also own a tow vehicle — a dually, a Sprinter, sometimes the hauler’s pusher truck. If you want to service that on the same equipment, now you need 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity and long-reach arms after all. The Nebraska crew chief did exactly that: he sized for the tow rig, not the race car, and ended up with a 10,000 lb unit that handles both. When people cross-shop automotive two post lifts by capacity number alone, this is the trap they fall into.
Step Three: Overhead or Baseplate in a Race Shop
Race shops are cable-and-hose jungles. Welders, air lines, drop cords, scale pads, setup plates — there is always something on the floor. A baseplate two-post adds one more obstruction between the columns, and if your setup routine involves rolling a four-corner scale system into position under the car, that plate is genuinely annoying. Overhead keeps the floor clean.
But race shops also tend to be pole buildings with modest sidewalls. We hear “30 by 40 with 12-foot sidewalls” constantly, and 12 feet is right on the edge. Overhead two-post models generally want 13 to 14 feet of clear height, so a 12-foot building pushes you to baseplate whether you like it or not. Measure to the bottom of the truss or the lowest purlin, not the peak, and subtract for lights and unit heaters. If you’re in a taller building — 14 feet or better — go overhead and enjoy the open floor. One more race-specific note: if you’re storing a car in the air overnight, which teams absolutely do between events, verify your model’s mechanical safety latches are rated for sustained loading and that you always lower onto a latch rather than leaving it on hydraulic pressure. Your car is due at a track three hours away Friday night. What happens next depends entirely on whether your lift’s parts are stocked in the Midwest or sitting in a container.

Fluid Service Workflow: Why Wheels-Free Wins
Oil changes and fluid service are the bread and butter of a race shop’s midweek routine — engine oil, rear end lube, transmission if you run one, brake bleed, shock rebuild pulls. A two-post puts the car at chest height with completely open access to the pan, the bellhousing, and all four corners simultaneously. That’s the whole argument versus a four-post, where the runways sit directly under the areas you need to reach and the wheels stay loaded.
The practical setup we recommend: mount a drain caddy on casters that clears your columns, run an air drop and a light on each column, and keep your pad adapters organized in a rack rather than scattered. Set the lift height so the pan is at your natural working height — most crews go too high, then fight the drain plug overhead. Step Four: Install, Anchoring, and the Concrete Question
Every two-post decision tree ends at the slab. Most pole-building race shops were poured 4 inches thick with fiber mesh and no rebar, which is minimum-acceptable for a 10,000 lb unit and marginal for anything bigger. If the pour is over compacted base and genuinely 4 inches, you’re usually fine with proper wedge anchors at manufacturer spec. If it’s cracked, if it was poured over black dirt, or if nobody knows the thickness, we hammer-test or core it before we drill.
You also want to think about where the columns land relative to control joints — never anchor within the manufacturer’s minimum distance of a saw cut or an expansion joint, because that’s where the concrete will fail first under overturning load. Radiant heat tubing in the floor is another one; we’ve had buyers tell us there’s no heat in the slab and find tubing anyway, so if there’s any question, we scan before drilling. As for install itself, some buyers genuinely don’t want it — one out-of-state customer told us flat out he’d handle his own, and that’s fine, we ship equipment. But for anyone within driving distance of central Iowa, we’d rather set it, torque it, bleed the hydraulics, cycle the safeties, and hand you a certified working hoist.
