He was mid-season, replacing CV axles and half-shafts between every other event, and he needed to know whether to rebuild the cylinder or replace the whole machine. That question is where most conversations about automotive two post lifts should start, and almost none of them do. This article walks the decision tree we used with him: budget first, then capacity, then configuration, then arms — and finally the part everybody ignores until it fails, which is the hydraulic cylinder, its seals, and whether a rebuild kit is the honest fix or a stall tactic.

Branch One: What’s the Real Budget, Including Everything?
The first branch of the tree is money, and it has to be the landed number rather than the unit price. We take calls every week from people who have a figure in their head — one recent lead told us flat out he was willing to spend around four thousand and didn’t want installation. That’s a workable budget for a light-duty baseplate unit if you have a forklift, a helper, and a weekend. It is not a workable budget if you also need freight to a residential address with a liftgate, a concrete cutout, and a 220V circuit run to the bay. Freight alone on a pair of columns can be a meaningful fraction of a low-tier purchase.
We group budgets into three practical tiers. Entry tier gets you a 9,000 to 10,000 lb machine, usually baseplate, adequate for passenger cars and light trucks in a home or single-bay shop. Mid tier gets a 10,000 to 12,000 lb clearfloor overhead from a name brand with a real parts network and a warranty someone will actually honor. Upper tier is 15,000 lb and above, three-stage arms, ALI certification, and the build quality a shop running eight hours a day needs. For a race team, the honest recommendation is usually mid tier — you’re not running a lift eight hours a day, but when you do run it you’re often working fast under time pressure with the car partially disassembled, and that’s exactly when cheap arm restraints and thin columns become a safety problem. Among automotive two post lifts, the mid tier is where the value curve peaks.
Branch Two: Capacity for a Race Car Is Not the Obvious Number
A dirt late model weighs about 2,300 pounds. A road-race sedan might be 2,800. On raw numbers, almost any lift on the market is overkill, and teams talk themselves into the smallest, cheapest unit available. That’s a mistake, and here’s why: the tow rig. Nearly every team we work with also needs to service the hauler, the dually, or the crew’s daily drivers on the same lift. The lift that only handles the race car sits idle six days a week and becomes a bad investment. We had a customer describe wanting to lift “a passenger vehicle, seven thousand pound or less” for maintenance and storage — and the moment we asked about his truck, the number changed.
The other reason capacity matters at the low end is stability rather than strength. A 2,400 lb car on a 12,000 lb lift puts almost no load on the hydraulics, which sounds fine until you realize the arm pads are carrying so little weight that a car with a stiff chassis can rock on them. Race cars have minimal suspension travel and often no factory pinch welds, so lift point selection is already awkward. Heavier-rated automotive two post lifts generally come with beefier arms, better pad adjustability, and taller stackable adapters — all of which help you get a solid four-point contact on a car that wasn’t designed to be lifted. Capacity is a proxy for build quality more than it is a strength limit. We steer race shops to 10,000 or 12,000 lb for exactly that reason, and it costs less than most people assume relative to a 9,000 lb bargain unit.
Branch Three: Clearfloor or Baseplate for a Race Shop
Once capacity is set, the configuration branch splits on your building. Clearfloor overhead keeps the bay floor completely open, which is a real advantage in a race shop where you’re rolling engine stands, tire carts, setup plates, and a scale system across the same square footage constantly. Nothing snags. The cost is roughly 12 feet of vertical clearance and a shut-off bar that limits how high a tall vehicle can go. If the hauler ever needs to come inside, measure carefully before you commit.
Baseplate wins when the ceiling is the constraint — low trusses, a garage door track that swings through the crossbeam’s path, or a pole building with 12-foot sidewalls and a header in the wrong place. It also wins if you might move the shop, since baseplate columns are simpler to unbolt and relocate. The compromise is that floor channel, and in a race environment it’s more of an issue than in a general repair shop because you’re constantly moving low-clearance items across the bay. A setup plate or a corner-weight scale doesn’t roll over a channel gracefully. Some teams split the difference by orienting the lift so the channel runs parallel to the main traffic path rather than across it. We’ll sketch that during a site visit. Whichever way it goes, both configurations of automotive two post lifts anchor into the same slab requirements, and that’s where we look first before drawing anything on paper.
Branch Four: Arms, Adapters, and CV Axle Access
CV axle and half-shaft work is the specific job that exposes bad arm geometry. To pull a half-shaft you need clear access to the hub, the lower control arm, the inner joint at the transaxle or diff, and enough room to swing a pry bar and get the shaft out at an angle without hitting the lift arm tube. If a two-stage arm puts its knuckle joint right where you need to work, you’ll fight it on every job. Three-stage front arms fold much shorter and reach much longer, so you can place the pad at the intended lift point rather than wherever the arm happens to reach.
Asymmetric column rotation matters too. On a symmetric lift the car sits centered between the posts and the doors hit the columns. On an asymmetric setup the vehicle sits farther back, doors clear, and the tech can get into the cabin to turn the wheel lock-to-lock while checking a reassembled axle for clicking. For a race car with a cage, being able to open the door fully is not a luxury. Add a set of tall stackable adapters — most factory pads are 3 to 4 inches and a lot of cars need 6 or more to clear rocker trim, splitters, or side skirts. The Cylinder Question: Rebuild Kit or Replace?
Back to the crew chief’s settling lift. A two-post that drifts down overnight is almost always one of three things: a leaking rod seal in the hydraulic cylinder, a failing check valve or lowering valve in the power unit, or fluid bypassing internally past the piston seal. Diagnosing which one is straightforward and worth doing before you spend money. Raise the lift, engage the mechanical locks, and look for wet film on the cylinder rod and a puddle or streak down the column interior. External weeping at the rod points at the rod seal. A dry cylinder with a lift that still drops points at the power unit valving. A cylinder that’s dry outside but won’t hold and won’t lift smoothly under load usually means the piston seal is bypassing internally.
Rebuild kits are real and they work. A typical kit includes the rod seal, wiper, piston seal or cup, O-rings, and backup rings for a specific cylinder bore and rod diameter — which is why we always ask for the lift model, serial, and cylinder part number before shipping anything. On an older cylinder, the honest evaluation is the bore condition. If the chrome on the rod is pitted or scored, or the bore has scoring you can catch a fingernail on, new seals will fail again within months and you should replace the cylinder. If the rod is clean and the bore is smooth, a seal kit is a couple hours of work and a fraction of the replacement cost. Fluid, Bleeding, and the Mistakes That Kill New Seals
The reason seal kits fail early usually isn’t the seal — it’s what’s in the reservoir. Two-post power units are not picky, but they are not indifferent either. Most manufacturers call for AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or in some cases ATF, and mixing them or topping off with whatever was on the shelf leads to varnish, swollen seals, and sticky valves. Contamination is worse. Grit in the fluid scores the cylinder bore and shreds a new rod seal in a season. When we rebuild a cylinder we drain the entire system, flush the reservoir, replace the filter screen, and refill with clean fluid of the correct spec. Skipping that step is why some rebuilds don’t last.
Bleeding matters too. Air trapped in the cylinder makes the lift jerk on the way up and creates the illusion of a leak because the carriage settles as the air compresses. After a rebuild, run the lift to full height and back down three or four full cycles with the arms unloaded, then top off the reservoir with the lift fully lowered — not raised, or you’ll overfill and blow fluid out the breather. Check equalization cable tension afterward, since a cylinder swap changes carriage timing. Then load-test with a vehicle you don’t care about, raise to a few feet, set the locks, and leave it an hour. If it holds, it holds. That crew chief rebuilt his cylinder in March, ran the whole season on it, and is still running it.
