A crew chief for a dirt late model team out of central Iowa called us in February with a problem we hear every winter: the team was doing every tire rotation, every wheel swap, and every corner-weight check on jack stands in a leased 40×60 shop, and the season was six weeks out. He wanted a two-post so the crew could get under the car fast between heat races and mid-week teardowns. Start With Budget, Not With Capacity

Every decision tree we run starts at the money, because budget quietly decides the other four branches. A racer who tells us he has four thousand dollars to spend is shopping a baseplate 9,000 lb asymmetric unit from an economy brand, no install, and he is going to bolt it down himself with a rotary hammer and a bag of wedge anchors. A racer with twelve thousand to work with is shopping a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger CL10V3 with a clearfloor overhead beam, professional installation, and a two-year commissioning relationship. Both are legitimate. What is not legitimate is buying the four-thousand-dollar unit and expecting the duty cycle of the twelve-thousand-dollar one.

The crew chief we worked with had budgeted for the middle tier. He also had a hidden constraint most teams forget: he was leasing the building, and the landlord wanted the anchors removable at the end of the term. That pushed him toward a baseplate model, since a clearfloor overhead requires structural clearance he did not control. We priced two configurations for him and let him sit with the numbers for a week. When teams shop automotive two post lifts on price alone, they usually skip freight, skip the electrical drop, and skip the concrete work, and those three line items can add thirty percent to the delivered cost. We quote them up front so nobody gets surprised at delivery.

The Site Survey We Run Before Anything Ships

Our site survey is not a formality. We measure slab thickness, ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, door header height, bay width from wall to wall, and the location of every floor drain, trench, and buried conduit run. On that central Iowa shop we found a 5-inch slab in the front third of the building and something closer to 4 inches toward the back where an addition had been poured decades earlier. That single measurement changed where the lift went. A 10,000 lb two-post wants a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers specify more once you factor in edge distance from any joint or crack.

We core-drill or use a slab scanner depending on the situation, and we always check for radiant floor heat. A racer in Missouri we quoted last year had heat tubing running exactly where his driver-side column needed to land, and finding that before we drilled saved him a flooded shop. Ceiling height matters just as much. Most clearfloor automotive two post lifts need 12 to 14 feet of overhead clearance; baseplate models will fit under a 10-foot ceiling but the crossbar overhead is gone and your cable runs go along the floor instead. We write all of it into a one-page survey sheet and send it with the quote.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work Drive the Arm Choice

For a race team, arm geometry is the whole ballgame. Tire rotation and wheel work mean the crew is at the corners of the car constantly, spinning nuts, checking runout, and swapping stagger. Symmetric two-posts put the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms, which is great for trucks but means the door hits the column when you try to get in and out of a lowered race car. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and shorten the front arms so the car sits back, and door clearance improves dramatically. For a crew that is climbing in and out to check pedal feel or reset a scale pad, that is not a small thing.

We steered this team toward an asymmetric configuration with low-profile three-stage front arms. Late model bodies sit low and the pickup points are shallow, so a standard arm pad stack will not slide under. Low-profile arms drop the collapsed height by an inch or two, and that inch is the difference between rolling on and jacking up first. We also specified taller screw-up adapters, because a tube-frame car needs the pad meeting a specific rail location rather than a factory pinch weld. If you are shopping automotive two post lifts for a race operation, budget for the adapter kit as part of the lift, not as an afterthought.

Power, Anchors, and the Install Day Sequence

Install day goes fast when the prep is done. On a typical two-post we set the columns, plumb them, mark and drill the anchor holes, torque anchors to spec, run the hydraulic lines and the equalization cables, wire the power unit, bleed the system, and then cycle the lift a dozen times under load while we adjust the cable tension and verify the locks engage evenly on both sides. That is a five-to-seven hour day for a two-man crew if the electrical is already there.

The electrical is where teams stall. Most 10,000 lb units run a 220-volt single-phase power unit drawing around 20 to 25 amps, and that needs a dedicated circuit with a disconnect within sight of the lift. Racers often have a 220 outlet for a welder and assume they can share it. They cannot, at least not safely, and an electrician’s half-day visit is cheaper than a burned motor. We also ask about compressed air, because the lock release on most models is air-actuated and a shop without a line to the column ends up pulling a cable manually every time. Both of those get flagged on our survey sheet, and both are the kind of detail that separates a smooth install of automotive two post lifts from a two-visit headache. We also confirm door swing so the overhead beam clears when the big door rolls up.

Baseplate Versus Clearfloor for a Race Shop

The clearfloor-versus-baseplate question comes up on nearly every quote, and for race shops the answer is less obvious than it is for a dealership. Clearfloor models route the hydraulics and cables through an overhead crossbar, leaving the floor completely open. That is a real advantage when you are rolling a transmission jack, a tire cart, and a scale set across the bay all day. The tradeoff is height: you need the ceiling for it, and the overhead bar sets a hard limit on how tall a vehicle you can raise before the roof contacts the crossbar.

Baseplate models run everything through a low channel at floor level. You gain vertical room, which matters if you have a 10-foot ceiling or if you ever want to put a tall enclosed trailer or a dually up in the air. You lose the clean floor, and creepers and floor jacks catch on the channel. For the central Iowa team, the leased-building constraint made the choice for us. For a shop that owns the building and has 13 feet of clear height, we usually push clearfloor. Either way, both styles of automotive two post lifts hold the same rated capacity and use the same lock mechanism, so this is about workflow, not safety. Capacity, Duty Cycle, and Why 10,000 Is Usually Enough

Racers ask for 12,000 lb capacity more often than they need it. A late model on a trailer weighs 2,400 pounds. The tow rig might be 8,000. The crew hauler could be more, but you are not lifting the hauler. A 10,000 lb unit handles every vehicle in a typical race operation with margin to spare, and it costs meaningfully less than the 12,000 and 15,000 lb tiers. Where the higher capacity earns its keep is when the same lift doubles as the shop lift for a family fleet that includes a three-quarter-ton diesel with a plow on it, which in Iowa is a common enough scenario.

Duty cycle matters more than headline capacity for a team. A shop lift might cycle fifteen times a day; a race shop cycles it forty times the week before a big show and twice in November. That intermittent, high-intensity pattern is hard on cable tension and on the power unit’s seals.
