A restoration shop owner outside Davenport called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he had settled on automotive two post lifts for his second bay, had a number in his head, and had no idea whether he needed an overhead or a baseplate model. His building was an older masonry shop with exposed trusses at about 11 feet 6 inches, a mezzanine on one side, and a slab of unknown thickness poured sometime in the 1970s. That’s not a catalog question — it’s a decision tree, and the order you walk it matters. We install and service lifts across Iowa every week, and we’ve learned that shops who start with configuration before they check ceiling and concrete almost always end up buying the wrong column.

Start with the vehicles, not the lift
Every good decision tree for automotive two post lifts starts with what rolls through the door — and restoration work makes that list weird. A shop doing ’60s muscle and pickup restorations might have nothing heavier than 6,000 pounds on the rack, but the wheelbases swing from a 94-inch Triumph to a 133-inch crew cab. That spread matters more than capacity. A 10,000 lb symmetric lift with standard arms will handle the weight fine and still leave you fighting to get the door open on a long-nose car, because symmetric columns sit centered on the vehicle and the doors land right in the posts.
That’s why we push asymmetric or versymmetric column designs for restoration work almost every time. Rotating the columns 30 degrees and shortening the front arms moves the driver forward in the bay, so the doors clear. On a Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger CL10V3, you can open both doors on a ’68 Mustang and still reach the rockers. Capacity is the easy part: unless you’re pulling in duallies or a loaded 3/4-ton, 10,000 pounds covers restoration work with margin. We only push clients up to 12,000 or 14,000 when they tell us fleet trucks or a service side is coming later. Buying capacity you don’t need costs you column footprint and floor space you’ll miss the day you’re wrestling a body on a rotisserie past the posts.
Ceiling height decides the configuration before budget does
Here’s the branch of the tree most people skip. An overhead two-post carries its equalizer cables and hydraulic hose across a beam at the top of the columns. That beam typically needs 12 feet of clear height, sometimes a shade less on a low-ceiling variant, and the beam itself eats a few inches of rise. A baseplate model runs everything through a channel bolted to the floor between the columns, so the only vertical limit is the vehicle on the lift plus whatever’s above it. That Davenport shop with 11-foot-6 trusses had the decision made for him before he ever looked at a price sheet.
The trade-off is real, though, and we’re honest about it. That floor channel is a trip hazard, a place for dirt and blast media to collect, and something you’ll drag a floor jack and a transmission jack over ten times a day. Restoration shops that do a lot of media blasting and welding tend to hate it after a year. If you have the height, we lean overhead, because a clean floor between the columns is worth a lot in a shop where parts carts and engine stands move constantly. If you’re between 11 and 12 feet, measure to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler heads, conduit, a garage door track in the open position — not the peak. We’ve had two customers order overhead automotive two post lifts based on a peak measurement and discover the door track sits eight inches into the swing path.
What the concrete has to say about it
Concrete is where a lot of restoration shop projects stall out, and it’s the one variable you can’t negotiate with. Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of manufacturers want more once you climb past 12,000 pounds. Older Iowa shop slabs are all over the map — we’ve cored a Quad Cities building expecting five inches and found three and a half over rubble fill, and we’ve found beautiful six-inch pours in buildings from the 1950s.
If the slab doesn’t make spec, the fix is straightforward but it needs to be in your budget from day one, not discovered in week three. We cut and pour footing pads under each column, typically a generous square of new concrete tied into the existing slab, then let it cure before anchoring. Baseplate models complicate this slightly because you’re also anchoring the floor channel, so the whole footprint between columns matters, not just two pads. Anchor bolts are not a place to save money either — use what the manufacturer specifies, torque them to spec, and re-torque after the first few weeks of use. We’ve been called out to more than one lift that shifted under load because someone used hardware-store wedge anchors in a thin slab. Nothing about the rest of the install matters if the columns aren’t tied to good concrete.
Budget tiers and what you actually give up
Restoration shops usually come to us with a number, and we’d rather work inside it honestly than talk someone into a lift they resent paying for. At the entry tier, you’re looking at import baseplate or overhead lifts in the 9,000 to 10,000 pound range — the kind of equipment we sell to home garages and one-man operations, often for less than half what a commercial-grade column costs. They lift cars. The compromises show up in arm adjustment ranges, pad quality, cylinder seals at year five, and how long you wait for a replacement part.
The middle tier is where most working restoration shops land: a well-built 10,000 or 12,000 lb asymmetric lift with ALI certification, solid arm geometry, and a parts pipeline that actually exists. The top tier — Rotary and Challenger commercial columns, or heavy-duty configurations — buys you duty cycle, better cable and sheave hardware, and the kind of longevity where the lift outlasts two owners of the building. Our honest read: if the lift runs more than a few cycles a day and you bill labor on it, spend at the middle tier or above. Arms, adapters, and the details restoration work exposes
Once configuration and budget are settled, the details separate a lift you like from a lift you tolerate. Restoration work means unibody cars with rusty pinch welds, frame-on classics with real rails, and everything in between. Low-profile arms matter — a lot of the cars coming into a restoration shop sit low enough that a standard arm pad won’t slide under without ramps. Ask specifically about minimum pad height and whether the arms telescope enough to reach a long-wheelbase truck lift point.
Adapters are cheap insurance. Truck adapters, stackable pucks in a couple of heights, and frame cradles for unibody cars all extend what the lift can safely hold. We tell customers to budget a few hundred dollars for adapters on day one rather than improvising with wood blocks — we’ve seen the results of improvising, and they’re expensive. Pay attention to arm restraints too. Gear-style restraints that lock the arm position under load are worth having when you’re rocking a body panel or pulling on a stuck suspension bolt. The other detail nobody asks about until it bites: hose and cable routing on baseplate automotive two post lifts. If the channel sits where your welding cart lives, you’ll be rerouting the shop, not the lift. Walk the bay with tape on the floor before you commit to where the columns land.
Installation realities in an older Davenport-area building
We do a lot of installs in buildings that weren’t designed for lifts, and older eastern Iowa shops have a signature set of surprises. Power is the first one. Most two-post lifts run a 220V single-phase motor, and plenty of older shops have a panel with no room and no dedicated circuit near the bay. That’s an electrician’s job, and it needs scheduling before our truck shows up, not after. Three-phase power is common in industrial buildings and worth using if you have it, but the motor has to be specified for it up front.
Second surprise: floor slope. Shop floors pitch toward drains, sometimes an inch or more across a bay. Columns get shimmed to plumb during install, and a good crew handles a reasonable pitch without drama, but severe slope changes where you can place the lift. Third: overhead obstructions we already mentioned, plus the door itself. A 16-foot overhead door with the track hung low is the single most common reason we’ve had to switch a customer from overhead to baseplate mid-project. We measure all of this during a site walk, and it’s free. Maintenance, inspection, and getting a long life out of it
A two-post lift is a simple machine that fails in predictable ways, which is good news for anyone willing to spend fifteen minutes a month on it. Equalizer cables stretch and fray — check them at the sheaves where wear concentrates, and replace in pairs, never one at a time. Hydraulic fluid level drops slowly and the pump gets loud when it’s starving. Lock latches want cleaning and lubrication so they engage crisply; a lock that hangs up is the beginning of the story where a lift settles unexpectedly. Arm restraint gears fill with grinder dust in a restoration shop and stop indexing.
ALI recommends an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and in our experience that inspection pays for itself on the first visit by catching a cable or an anchor issue before it becomes a dropped vehicle. We do inspections across Iowa and we stock cables, cylinders, lock assemblies, sheaves, and pads for essentially every brand we’ve ever seen in a shop, including plenty of lifts whose manufacturers no longer exist. That’s the quiet argument for buying good automotive two post lifts from someone who also services them — when a cable lets go on a Tuesday, the question isn’t what it cost in 2019, it’s whether anyone can get you a part by Thursday.
