A small-fleet operator in southern Minnesota called us in November with a problem we hear every fall: eleven vehicles, a shop with room for six, and a winter coming. He wanted to know whether automotive two post lifts could double as seasonal storage — park a service van up in the air from December to April, keep a work truck underneath, and get his bay count back without pouring a new building. The honest answer is complicated, and it comes down to which of two configurations you pick and what the warranty on that equipment actually covers when a vehicle sits loaded for four months. We ran both options side by side for him. Here is what that comparison looked like.

Configuration A: 12,000 lb Clear-Floor Asymmetric
The first option we priced was a 12,000 pound clear-floor asymmetric unit with three-stage front arms. His fleet skews toward half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups plus two cargo vans, and the vans are the reason we went up in capacity from the obvious 10,000 pound class. A loaded service van with shelving, a compressor, and a parts inventory can sit at 8,600 pounds before anybody gets in it, and we do not like putting a lift within fifteen percent of its rating as a routine practice, let alone leaving it there all winter.
Asymmetric arms rotate the vehicle back so the doors open past the columns, which is a nice-to-have for service work and largely irrelevant for storage. What mattered more in his building was the clear floor: 26 feet of open bay length, a floor drain running down the middle, and a habit of sliding welding carts and engine hoists around. A baseplate channel across that path would have been a daily annoyance. The clear-floor overhead beam sat at 12 feet 6 inches on this model, and his ceiling was 15 feet 4 inches to the joists, so a stored van at 82 inches tall could go up about four and a half feet before the roof met the beam — enough to park a low sedan or a Ranger underneath, not enough for a second full-size truck. That constraint drove the whole conversation.
Configuration B: 15,000 lb Two-Post with Extended Height Columns
The second option was a 15,000 pound unit with extended-height columns and a taller overhead beam, roughly 14 feet 8 inches to the underside. That configuration bought him another two feet of usable rise, which is the difference between storing a van over a sedan and storing a van over a second pickup. It also gave a wider margin over his heaviest vehicle, which matters for long-duration static loading in ways most buyers never think about.
The costs were real, though. Heavier columns, heavier carriages, a bigger power unit, and anchor requirements that pushed his slab into questionable territory — we core-tested and found just under five inches at 3,500 PSI, adequate for the 12,000 pound unit and marginal for the 15,000. A footing pour would have added a week and a solid line item. Freight was higher, and because both automotive two post lifts we were comparing came from the same manufacturer family, we could tell him the parts availability was equivalent, which is not always true when you cross brands. He ultimately went with the 12,000 pound clear-floor unit and reorganized what got stored where — a van over a compact, not a van over a truck. That was the right call for his money, and it is usually the right call: buy the configuration your slab and ceiling already support, then adapt the plan around it.
Whether Long-Term Storage Is Even Allowed
Here is the part nobody tells you at the trade show. Most manufacturer documentation for automotive two post lifts describes the equipment as a service lift, not a storage device. Some manuals explicitly discourage leaving a vehicle raised unattended for extended periods; others are silent, which is not the same as permission. Practically, a two-post holds a vehicle on mechanical locks, not on hydraulic pressure, so a properly maintained unit sitting on its locks is stable. The risk is not sudden failure — it is slow, unmonitored degradation. A weeping cylinder seal, a cable that has stretched slightly out of equalization, a lock latch that is not fully seated on one column.
Four months of nobody looking at it is four months of nobody catching that. Our guidance to this customer, and to anybody storing on a two-post, was a written monthly walk-around: check that both locks are audibly and visually engaged, look for fluid on the floor under the power unit and at the cylinder base, check cable tension by eye at both columns, and confirm the arm restraints are locked. Ten minutes, once a month, logged on a clipboard hanging on the column. If you are going to use automotive two post lifts for seasonal storage, that log is also what makes any future warranty conversation go smoothly instead of badly. A four-post lift is the purpose-built storage answer if storage is the primary mission — but if service is primary and storage is a winter bonus, a two-post with discipline works.
What Warranty Coverage Actually Includes
Warranty on commercial-grade two-post equipment is usually tiered, and the tiers matter more than the headline number. Structural components — columns, carriages, arms, weldments — typically carry the longest term, often five years and sometimes longer on premium lines. Hydraulic components like the cylinder and power unit generally get a shorter term, commonly one to two years. Wear items are the category people misread: cables, sheaves, lock latch springs, slide blocks, and hoses are frequently covered for a year or excluded as maintenance items entirely.
Labor is the other split. Many manufacturer warranties cover parts only, meaning if a cylinder fails in month fourteen you get a cylinder shipped free and you pay somebody to install it. That is where buying from an installing distributor changes the math — we handle the claim and the labor together, and on equipment we installed we often carry our own labor coverage on top of the manufacturer’s parts coverage. Ask that question specifically before you buy, because the answer varies wildly between a local outfit and a drop-ship website. Also ask whether the warranty requires professional installation and ALI-certified inspection to stay valid. On several major lines it does, and a self-installed unit with no anchor torque record and no annual inspection is a warranty claim waiting to get denied on paperwork rather than on merit.
Automotive Two Post Lifts: The Claim Workflow Start to Finish
When something breaks, here is how it actually goes. Step one is documentation: model number, serial number off the column data plate, install date, and a clear description with photos. Step two is diagnosis — either our tech goes out or we walk your maintenance person through it on the phone, because a manufacturer will not authorize a cylinder under warranty based on “it’s leaking somewhere.” They want to know where and they usually want a photo.
Step three is the claim submission, which we file on the customer’s behalf with the serial, the failure description, the photos, and the install record. Turnaround on approval ranges from same-day to about a week depending on the manufacturer and whether the part is a stock item. Step four is the part arriving and getting installed, and step five — the one everybody forgets — is returning the failed component. Most warranties require the old part back for failure analysis, and if it does not go back, the credit does not post and you can end up invoiced for it. We handle that return leg, which is a small thing that saves customers real money. Maintenance That Keeps Coverage Intact Through a Minnesota Winter
Cold and salt are hard on this equipment, and southern Minnesota gets plenty of both. Vehicles come in dripping brine, that brine lands on the cable channel, the anchor bases, and the arm restraint gear teeth, and by year three you have corrosion where you need clean metal. The fix is unglamorous: hose or wipe the column bases and arm pivots down periodically through the winter, keep the arm restraint gears clean and lightly lubricated, and do not let salt slush freeze around an anchor plate.
Hydraulic fluid is the other winter item. Unheated shops see fluid thicken enough that a power unit labors on the first lift of the morning, and repeatedly straining a pump against cold fluid shortens its life. If the shop drops below about forty degrees overnight, ask us about a cold-weather fluid spec — it is a cheap change that heads off a warranty conversation you would rather not have. Beyond that, the annual ALI-certified inspection is the single best investment in the equipment. It catches stretched cables and worn slide blocks before they become failures, and it produces the document that keeps your coverage clean.
