Automotive two post lifts are the workhorse of every small fleet shop we walk into, and yet the part that trips people up almost never has anything to do with the lift itself — it’s the freight. We took a call last spring from a six-van delivery outfit in east-central Iowa that had been chewing through CV axles and half-shafts on gravel routes, doing every one of those jobs on jack stands in a cold pole building. They knew they needed a lift. What they hadn’t planned for was a 2,800-pound crated column set arriving on a 53-foot dry van with a driver who had exactly thirty minutes and no liftgate. That’s the conversation we have most often, so let’s have it here.

Why CV Axle Work Pushed This Fleet Off the Floor

Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is a job that punishes you for working low. You need the wheel off, the knuckle accessible, the inner joint free of the transmission or intermediate shaft, and enough room to pry without lying on your side in a puddle of gear oil. On jack stands, a tech is fighting the car the whole time. On a two-post, the vehicle is at chest height, the suspension hangs free, and the axle drops out in a fraction of the time. For a fleet running high-mileage vans on chip-seal and gravel, that difference compounded fast — they were doing eight to ten axles a year plus boots, bearings, and brakes.

The other driver was consistency. When the same three techs share a bay, a lift creates a repeatable process: same arm positions, same pad heights, same torque sequence. That matters more than most owners realize. We’ve seen shops cut a two-hour axle job to forty-five minutes purely because the vehicle was up where the work happens. Automotive two post lifts also free the floor between jobs, which in a 40×60 building with parts shelving on one wall is not a small thing. The fleet manager’s own words were that he wanted his people spending time on the vehicle, not on getting to the vehicle.

Configuration One: Baseplate Two-Post for a Low Building

The building in question had 11-foot 6-inch sidewalls with exposed trusses and a 16-foot overhead door. That’s the single most common constraint we run into in Iowa pole buildings, and it steers a lot of shops toward a baseplate design. A baseplate model runs the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a channel bolted to the floor between the columns instead of across an overhead crossbeam. Overall height drops to roughly the column height — often 11 to 12 feet — so you clear low trusses, sprinkler lines, and lighting without cutting anything.

The tradeoff is that floor channel. You drive over it every time, and on a van with low ground effects or a lowered car you’ll notice. It also collects grit and needs an occasional sweep-out so the cable sheaves stay clean. But for a fleet running Transits and Express vans with plenty of ground clearance, it’s a non-issue. Baseplate versions of automotive two post lifts also tend to install slightly faster because there’s no overhead beam to lift into position and square. We priced this configuration in the entry-to-mid commercial tier — meaningfully less than a full symmetric overhead with a rolling jack package, which mattered to an owner who had a number in his head before we ever showed up.

Configuration Two: Clear-Floor Overhead With Asymmetric Arms

The alternative we quoted was a clear-floor overhead model — a Rotary SPO-series style two-post with the crossbeam up top, asymmetric columns, and a shutoff bar in the beam. Nothing on the floor at all. For a shop that also takes in employee cars, customer trailers, and the occasional lowered pickup, that clean drive-through is worth real money. Asymmetric column rotation moves the vehicle rearward so doors open past the columns, which is how you keep from dinging a fleet van’s paint forty times a year.

The catch is height. To run an overhead safely you want roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling for a standard column, and that building didn’t have it under the trusses. We measured 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom chord at the bay centerline. You can order short-column variants, and we do that regularly, but it costs you rise — meaning a 6-foot-2 tech is now ducking under a van’s rocker instead of standing under it. That’s the honest comparison we lay out on every quote for automotive two post lifts: baseplate buys you headroom and costs you floor, overhead buys you floor and costs you headroom. There’s no version where you get both for free, and any salesperson who tells you otherwise hasn’t been in your building.

Freight Reality: What Actually Shows Up at Your Door

Here’s the part nobody puts in the brochure. A two-post ships as two banded column crates plus a hardware and arm carton, and the whole thing commonly lands between 1,800 and 3,200 pounds depending on capacity. It moves on an LTL common carrier, and unless you specifically pay for it, that carrier is not obligated to get it off the trailer for you. No liftgate. No pallet jack that will handle a 1,400-pound column on gravel. The driver backs in, opens the doors, and waits.

So before we release an order we ask three questions. Do you have a forklift or skid loader with forks rated for at least 2,000 pounds? Is your approach paved or compacted enough that a fork truck won’t sink? And can you take delivery inside a weekday business window, because residential and after-hours deliveries carry accessorial charges that surprise people. The fleet in this story had a 5,000-pound rough-terrain forklift for pallets of route freight, which made unloading a ten-minute job. Shops without one either rent for a half day, arrange a liftgate and limited-access service up front, or let us handle delivery as part of an installed package. Inspecting the Crates Before the Driver Leaves

Sign the delivery receipt clean and you have effectively agreed the shipment arrived undamaged. That is a bad trade when a bent column or a crushed carriage means weeks of waiting. We tell every customer the same thing: walk the crates with the driver still standing there. Look for forklift punctures through the sides, crushed corners, oil stains under the power unit box, and banding that has been cut and re-run. Count the cartons against the bill of lading. Arms and hardware boxes are the ones that go missing.

If anything looks wrong, write it on the delivery receipt before you sign — “crate 2 corner crushed, possible column damage” is enough to preserve a claim. Photograph everything on the trailer, then again on the ground. Then open the hardware carton and inventory it against the packing list the same day, not the morning you planned to install. We have watched a shop lose a full week because the anchor bolt bag was short and nobody looked until the concrete was already marked out. On the fleet job in east-central Iowa the crates were clean, but the power unit had shifted enough to kink a hose fitting — caught it in the first ten minutes, had a replacement out of our Ames stock the next day, and the install stayed on schedule. That’s the entire argument for inspecting early.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Slab Question Everyone Skips

Capacity on the data plate means nothing if the floor won’t hold the anchors. For most 9,000 to 12,000 pound automotive two post lifts, manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many call for more — with a required distance from any expansion joint, saw cut, or slab edge. Pole buildings are where this goes sideways. We regularly core-test slabs that were poured “four inches” and come back at three and a quarter in spots, over questionable base.

The fix isn’t complicated, it’s just work you have to plan for. Cut out a footing pad per the manufacturer’s dimensions — typically something in the range of four to five feet square and eight to twelve inches deep under each column — tie it in, pour it, and let it cure the full 28 days before you set anchors. Yes, that means ordering your lift earlier than you wanted to. We’d rather have that conversation in February than get a call in July about a column that walked under load. When we survey a site we hammer-test the slab, check for radiant heat tubing (a real hazard when you’re drilling five-and-a-half-inch anchor holes), verify joint locations, and mark the layout so the bay works with your door swing and your air drops. Skipping that survey is how a good lift ends up in a bad spot for twenty years.

What We’d Tell Another Small Fleet Starting From Scratch

The fleet in east-central Iowa went with the baseplate configuration, a 10,000-pound capacity unit with truck adapters and low-profile arm pads, and they’ve been running it hard for a couple of seasons now. Would the clear-floor overhead have been nicer? On the days they roll a lowered personal car in, yes. But the decision was driven by a truss height they weren’t going to change and a budget that had a ceiling. That’s how most of these decisions actually get made, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

If you’re starting from zero, do it in this order: measure your clear ceiling height at the bay centerline, confirm slab thickness with a core or at minimum a hammer test, identify how the crates will come off the truck, and only then pick a model. Match capacity to your heaviest vehicle with margin — a 6,000-pound van does not need an 18,000-pound lift, but a 9,000-pound unit gives you room to grow into three-quarter-ton trucks.
