Start With the Budget Number, Not the Brochure
Almost everyone starts this backwards. They find a model they like, then discover the installed cost is double what they had in mind. We would rather you tell us the number first. A no-frills baseplate unit with a modest capacity sits at the bottom tier. A mid-tier clearfloor asymmetric from a name brand sits in the middle. A heavy commercial column set with high-rise arms and a certified install sits at the top. Those tiers are far apart, and knowing which one you live in eliminates two-thirds of the catalog before we waste your time.
Budget also decides how much of the work you do yourself. A shop owner we worked with in the Grand Forks area told us plainly he was not paying for install — he had a forklift, a hammer drill and a helper, and he wanted the freight dropped in his lot and nothing more. That is a legitimate way to buy, and it can knock a real chunk off the total. But it means you own the unloading, the anchoring, the shimming and the plumb check. When we price automotive two post lifts for customers, we always quote the equipment and the install separately so you can see exactly which part you are buying and which part you are taking on. There is no shame in either answer as long as you make the choice on purpose instead of finding out at the loading dock.
Capacity: What Annual State Inspections Actually Demand
Restoration and inspection work is a strange mix. Most of what rolls through the door is a 3,500 lb coupe. But once a year somebody brings in a loaded three-quarter-ton with a plow mount, and if your columns are rated for 9,000 lb you are doing math in your head while the vehicle is in the air. That is a bad place to be. Our rule of thumb is to buy at least one capacity tier above your normal work — if your daily average is passenger cars, get 10,000 lb; if you regularly see light trucks, get 12,000 or 15,000.
Capacity is not just the sticker number, either. It is the arm geometry, the pad height and the reach. A restoration shop lifting a unibody 1960s sedan needs low-profile arms and screw pads that can find a rusty pinch weld without crushing it. A shop doing inspections on modern trucks needs arms that extend far enough to reach factory lift points behind big rocker cladding. We have seen customers buy plenty of capacity and still be unable to pick up half their fleet because the arms were wrong. When you look at automotive two post lifts, read the arm spec as carefully as the tonnage. Rotary and Challenger both publish reach tables, and we will pull them for you if the listing is vague.
Clearfloor vs. Baseplate: Ceiling Height Decides
This is the second fork in the decision tree and it is almost entirely dictated by your building. Clearfloor (overhead) models put the equalizer cables and hydraulic line in a crossbeam above the vehicle, which leaves the floor completely open — no bar to trip over, no cable channel to sweep. They generally need 12 feet of clear ceiling, sometimes more if you want full rise on a tall vehicle. Baseplate models run everything through a low channel at the floor and can live under a 10-foot ceiling or a low garage door header.
A customer in the Dakotas told us his maximum height was 139 inches, which is a hair under 11 feet 7 inches. That put an overhead out of reach for full-rise service and pointed straight at a baseplate. He was disappointed for about ten minutes and then realized the baseplate was also cheaper and lighter to unload. Pole buildings with 12-foot sidewalls are the classic gray zone — the wall says 12 feet but the truss bottom chord or a light fixture eats four inches and suddenly you do not have the clearance. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the actual bay, not the tallest point in the building. We ask for that number on every quote for automotive two post lifts, because getting it wrong means a return shipment and a very expensive lesson.
The Slab Is the Part Nobody Measures
Concrete is where more projects die than any other single factor. A two-post lift concentrates the entire load of the vehicle plus the column into a handful of anchor bolts, and those anchors need real depth and real strength to hold. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lighter capacities, and heavier columns want six inches or more. A customer in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” — and that “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. We told him to core a test hole in the bay before ordering anything.
If the slab is thin, you are not out of luck. Cutting and pouring footing pads under each column is a standard fix, and it is far cheaper than replacing a floor or replacing a dropped car. Radiant floor heat is the other landmine — several of our customers have PEX in the slab, and drilling blind into a heat loop turns a one-day install into a plumbing emergency. If you have in-floor heat, find the as-built drawing or scan the slab. We have installed automotive two post lifts over radiant floors many times, but only after we knew exactly where the tubing ran. Ten minutes of due diligence up front prevents a very long afternoon.
Freight: How a Two-Post Actually Arrives
Here is what surprises first-time buyers most. A two-post lift ships as a crated pallet load that typically runs 1,500 to 2,500 lb depending on capacity — columns strapped together, carriage assemblies, arms, power unit and hardware. It comes on a standard 48-foot dry van or flatbed via LTL freight, and unless you have paid for lift-gate service and inside delivery, the driver’s job ends at the back of the trailer. He is not going to help you wrestle columns onto your floor.
That means you need either a loading dock at trailer height, a forklift rated for the load, or a scheduled lift-gate delivery. A skid steer with forks will handle most residential-tier packages but will fight you on a heavy commercial column set. Also think about the approach: can a 48-foot trailer actually get to your building, turn around and back in? Gravel lots soften in the Minnesota spring thaw, and we have watched drivers refuse to leave the county road. Answer those four questions honestly and delivery day is boring. Skip them and you will be paying redelivery fees.
Unloading and Staging Without Damaging Anything
The restoration shop owner we mentioned at the top had a forklift, which put him ahead of most buyers. What he did not have was a plan for where the crate would sit while he laid out anchor locations. Columns are top-heavy and awkward; standing one up by hand is a two-person job at minimum and a genuine injury risk if you improvise. We stage columns lying flat on cribbing near their final footprint, unbox and inventory every carton against the packing list before anything gets stood up, and only then chalk the floor.
Inventory matters more than people expect. Freight damage on hydraulic power units and bent arm pins is common, and carriers only honor claims noted at delivery or within a short window. Open the boxes while the driver is still there if you can. Photograph the crate before you cut a strap. We have had customers discover a crushed power unit three weeks after delivery when they finally got around to the install, and by then the claim window had closed and they were buying a replacement out of pocket. Certification, Service and What Happens in Year Five
If you are using a lift for annual state inspections, the paperwork side matters. Many jurisdictions and most insurance carriers want documentation that the equipment was installed to manufacturer spec and is inspected annually by a qualified inspector. ALI-certified inspection is the standard, and it covers cables, latches, anchors, arm restraints, hydraulic condition and structural welds. Plan for consumables from day one. Equalizer cables stretch and need periodic adjustment, then eventually replacement. Lock latches and their springs wear. Cylinder seals leak after enough cycles, and hoses get brittle. Keeping a spare cable set and a seal kit on the shelf turns a week of downtime into an afternoon.
