Why This Shop Needed Two Different Configurations
The building was a classic Iowa mixed-use structure — half of it purpose-built for trailer work with a tall roll-up and open trusses, the other half an older addition with a dropped header and conduit running exactly where you would want a crossbar. That single detail decided everything. In the tall bay we spec’d a clearfloor overhead unit, because when you are pulling leaf springs and coil-overs on a Class C chassis or a dual-axle trailer, you want nothing between the columns at floor level. Creepers roll, transmission jacks roll, and a spring compressor on a rolling stand does not have to be lifted over anything.
In the low bay we went baseplate. A lot of shop owners hear baseplate and assume it is a compromise product, and that is not fair. The floor plate is about an inch and a half tall, it is bolted and often ramped, and after a week nobody in the shop notices it. What you gain is the ability to run a lift under a ceiling that would otherwise disqualify you entirely. The lead on that decision came straight from his own numbers — he had roughly 139 inches of usable height, which is right at the edge for most overhead configurations once you add the crossbar and the shutoff bar. Baseplate gave him full-rise capability in a bay that would have sat empty. A year later, both configurations are earning, and neither one has been the “regret” purchase he was afraid of.
Suspension Work Is Hard on a Lift in Ways Alignment Work Is Not
Most spec sheets are written around general repair. Suspension and shock replacement is a different animal, and it is worth understanding before you buy. When a tech pulls a strut assembly or drops a rear axle, the vehicle’s weight distribution changes while it is in the air. On an RV chassis or a loaded trailer, you can move several hundred pounds fore or aft in a matter of minutes. That means arm restraints, pad height, and honest capacity headroom matter more than they do for a shop doing brakes and oil.
This is the argument we make constantly for buying capacity you do not think you need. The shop near Waterloo originally penciled out a 10,000 lb unit for both bays. We pushed toward 12,000 on the trailer side and he is glad we did — the day a customer rolled in with a loaded toy hauler that scaled heavier than advertised, the extra margin was the difference between doing the job and turning it away. Automotive two post lifts are rated at the columns, but real-world safety lives in your arm geometry and your pad contact. We also spec’d taller screw pads and a set of stackable adapters, because RV and van chassis frames sit high and the factory pad stack runs out fast. What Install Day Actually Looked Like
Freight arrived on a Tuesday. Two crates, two columns each, carriage assemblies boxed separately, arms banded on a pallet. The first thing our crew did was not unbox anything — it was core the floor. We had a concrete report from the original pour on the newer half of the building, but the addition was an unknown. Coring told us we had just over five inches of decent slab with no rebar where we needed anchors. That is workable for the baseplate unit but it changes the anchor spec, and it is the exact detail that separates an install that lasts twenty years from one that starts weeping at the base plates in year three.
From there it was standard work: column plumb, anchor torque to spec, hydraulic lines routed and bled, electrical dropped from above rather than run across the floor, and then a full cycle test with a loaded vehicle. We ran both units to full rise and back down five times before anyone signed anything. The overhead unit’s shutoff bar got adjusted twice because the first setting was clipping on a tall van roof rack. Total time on site was a long day and a half for both. The owner’s biggest surprise was how much of the schedule was concrete and layout rather than assembly — which is usually the case. We tell people to plan their install week around the floor, not around the crate.
Overhead vs Baseplate, Judged After Twelve Months
Here is the honest scorecard from a year of real use. The overhead unit wins on floor cleanliness and on anything involving rolling equipment. Trailer axles, spring packs, and shock work all go faster because a tech can drag a jack straight through the bay without a hop. It also keeps the hydraulic and equalization lines up and out of the way of a floor sweep and out of the path of a dropped brake drum.
The baseplate unit wins on ceiling flexibility, and it wins on one thing the owner did not anticipate — vertical clearance for tall vehicles. With no overhead crossbar, he can put a cargo van or a small box truck up without worrying about the shutoff bar contacting the roof. That has turned the low bay into the tall-vehicle bay, which is genuinely funny given the original reasoning. Maintenance has been a wash. Both configurations run the same power unit family, the same cylinders, and the same cable or chain equalization depending on model. Automotive two post lifts do not really differ in service burden by configuration; they differ by how well they were installed and how honest the shop is about greasing the carriage slides. If you have the ceiling, we lean overhead. If you do not, or if you regularly lift tall vehicles, baseplate is not second place — it is a different tool.
The First Real Service Call: Slow Drift and a Weeping Cylinder
Around month nine, the baseplate unit started drifting down maybe an inch over an hour with a vehicle up. Techs noticed it during a long suspension job where the truck sat overnight. That is a symptom with a short list of causes: a check valve holding debris, a lowering valve not fully seating, or a cylinder seal starting to pass. We came out, cycled it dry, and found a light film of fluid at the rod wiper on the driver-side cylinder.
It was a rebuild kit, not a new cylinder. Seals, wiper, and a fresh o-ring set, plus a fluid change because the reservoir had picked up moisture from a shop that runs a floor drain and a pressure washer. Total downtime was under half a day. This is the part of ownership people do not plan for and should — automotive two post lifts are hydraulic machines in a wet, dirty, temperature-swinging environment, and central Iowa gives you humid summers and single-digit winters in the same building. Fluid gets water in it. Seals get hard. The fix is cheap if you catch it early and expensive if you ignore it until the carriage will not hold. Concrete, Anchors, and the Thing Most Buyers Skip
We get calls every month from people who bought a lift online, had it delivered, and then discovered their slab is four inches of thirty-year-old concrete over questionable base. It is the single most common reason an install stalls. The general expectation for most automotive two post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb class is four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and honestly we prefer to see more than the minimum, especially where you are doing suspension work and putting dynamic load into the columns.
If your slab does not measure up, you are not out of options. Cutting and pouring anchor pads under each column is a routine fix and it costs a fraction of the lift. It adds a week to your timeline for cure, which is why we bring it up in the first phone call rather than on install day. The Waterloo shop did exactly this on the addition side — two three-by-three pads, poured, cured, then anchored. Beyond thickness, watch your edge distance. Anchors too close to a control joint or a slab edge will not develop full pull-out strength no matter how good the concrete is. We measure that on every job. And be honest about heated floors: if you have PEX in the slab, tell your installer before anybody puts a hammer drill to it. Start with the ceiling and the concrete, not with the brochure. Those two measurements eliminate more than half the catalog before you ever debate features. Then decide what percentage of your work is suspension, exhaust, and underbody versus tires and brakes, because that ratio tells you whether you want the truly clear floor of an overhead unit or whether you can live with a plate. Then buy more capacity than your heaviest current vehicle, because your heaviest vehicle in three years will be heavier than it is today.
