Suspension and shock replacement is one of the most demanding jobs you can do overhead, and the wrong arm configuration turns a two-hour job into an all-Saturday wrestling match. Why Suspension Work Changes the Buying Math
Most buyers spec a lift around the heaviest vehicle they own. That is a reasonable starting point, but suspension work adds a second set of constraints that capacity alone does not cover. When you are pulling struts, you need the wheels hanging free, you need room to swing a spring compressor, and you need to walk around the car with an impact gun without ducking under an arm. A lift that raises 10,000 pounds beautifully can still be a poor suspension lift if the arms sit where your knees want to be.
The other factor is time under load. A brake job might have the car in the air for forty minutes. A full front-end refresh on a rusty Midwest daily driver can keep that vehicle up for two days while you wait on a part from a warehouse in Des Moines. That means you want a lift with a mechanical lock system you trust completely, arm restraints that hold under vibration, and a hydraulic circuit that does not creep overnight. We tell every hobbyist the same thing: buy for the long job, not the quick one. When we walk people through automotive two post lifts for a home shop, that distinction reshapes the shortlist more than capacity ever does. A 9,000 or 10,000 pound unit with excellent arm geometry beats a 12,000 pound unit with clumsy arms every single time for this kind of work.
Symmetric Arms: What They Actually Do Well
A symmetric lift has four arms of roughly equal length, and the columns face each other directly. The vehicle sits centered between the posts, with about half the weight forward of the columns and half behind. That balanced load path is why symmetric configurations have been the default for heavy trucks, vans, and dually pickups for decades. If your project list includes a three-quarter-ton work truck or a full-size van, symmetric arms distribute that mass in a way the engineering was designed around.
The trade-off is door swing. Because the car sits centered, the columns end up near the door openings on most passenger vehicles. On a sedan, you may only get the door partway open before it contacts a post. For suspension work that is often irrelevant, since you are outside the car with the wheels off. But if you also do interior work, dash removal, or you simply want to get in and start the engine while it is up, that limitation gets old. We have installed plenty of symmetric units in Council Bluffs and Omaha-area garages where the owner works mainly on trucks and never once complained. We have also swapped arms for people who bought symmetric, then bought a Miata. Think about the next five years of vehicles, not just what is in the driveway today.
Asymmetric Arms and Rotated Columns
An asymmetric setup uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms, and the columns are typically rotated about thirty degrees. The vehicle sits back in the bay, roughly a third of the mass ahead of the posts and two-thirds behind. That shift is what buys you door clearance, and it is genuinely dramatic on a low car. You can open the driver’s door fully, get in, release the parking brake, and get out again without contorting.
For suspension and shock replacement on cars and crossovers, we usually lean asymmetric. The shorter front arms tuck in cleanly at the pinch weld pockets, the rear arms reach back to the factory lift points without maxing out, and you have more open floor around the front wheels, which is exactly where strut work happens. Where asymmetric gets tricky is heavy trucks. Push a long-wheelbase pickup onto an asymmetric lift and you can run out of rear arm reach or load the columns unevenly. Some manufacturers solve this with versymmetric designs that offer both arm patterns on one carriage, and those are worth the premium if your garage sees mixed traffic. Among the automotive two post lifts we install, the versymmetric models are the ones owners regret the least, because the configuration decision stops being permanent.
Concrete: The Checklist Item Nobody Wants to Hear
We have turned down more installs over concrete than over anything else. A two post lift concentrates the entire weight of the vehicle plus the lift structure into eight anchor bolts in two small footprints. If the slab is not thick enough or strong enough, those anchors pull. We have seen it happen, and it is not a slow failure.
The general requirement for a standard 10,000 pound unit is a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor pattern. Many manufacturers want more than that, and taller columns or higher capacities push the requirement up. One caller from northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” and had a loft on one side. That “maybe less” is the whole problem. We ask people to core-drill or at minimum drill a test hole in an out-of-the-way spot and measure honestly. If the slab does not qualify, the fix is a cut-out and pour of a reinforced pad in each column footprint, which is a weekend of work and far cheaper than an accident. Overhead vs Baseplate for Low Ceilings
Ceiling height is the second hard constraint. An overhead-style lift runs the equalization cables and the shutoff bar across the top between the columns. It keeps the floor completely clear, which is ideal for rolling toolboxes and jack stands around, but it needs roughly twelve feet of clearance for a full-height model. A baseplate design routes everything through a low channel across the floor, so it fits under a lower ceiling but you step over that channel constantly.
We hear from a lot of pole-barn and attached-garage owners with ten-foot walls. One buyer up in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch maximum height and had already figured out on his own that overhead was off the table. That is the right analysis. If you are in a 30×40 building with twelve-foot sidewalls, you have options; if you have a residential garage with a nine-foot ceiling, you are looking at baseplate models, shorter-column variants, or a mid-rise scissor instead. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Garage door tracks, opener rails, and light fixtures all count. Then subtract the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to lift and see what is left for actual working room. Suspension work does not require full height, so a slightly lower rise is a reasonable compromise if it makes the difference between a lift and no lift.
Arms, Adapters, and Getting Under Low Cars
The arms are where a lift either works for your fleet or fights you. Standard arms with screw-up pads handle most sedans and crossovers fine. Low-profile arms have a thinner pad stack and a flatter profile that slides under sports cars, lowered vehicles, and anything with an aggressive front air dam. If you own or plan to own anything with less than five inches of ground clearance, order low-profile arms with the lift rather than adding them later.
Adapters matter just as much. Truck adapters add three to six inches of height so you can reach frame rails on a lifted pickup. Frame cradle pads protect pinch welds on unibody cars. Rubber blocks in a couple of thicknesses cover most of what shows up in a home shop. We keep these in stock because owners always underestimate how many they will want. The one habit we push hardest with hobbyists doing suspension work: set the arms at the factory lift points every single time, check that all four restraints have clicked, and give the car a firm shove at knee height before you go above waist level. That ten-second check has prevented more incidents than any feature on a spec sheet. Good arm setup is what separates the people who love their automotive two post lifts from the people who are nervous around them.
Your Pre-Purchase Checklist Before You Buy
Here is the short version we give callers. One: measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction and decide overhead or baseplate. Two: verify slab thickness and PSI with an actual drilled hole. Three: list every vehicle you expect to lift in the next five years and take the heaviest, longest, and lowest of them. Four: pick symmetric for a truck-heavy list, asymmetric for a car-heavy list, versymmetric if it is genuinely mixed. Five: confirm your bay width gives you at least twelve feet between columns plus walking room on both sides. Six: decide on power, because single-phase 220V is what most home shops run and it needs a dedicated circuit.
Seven, and this is the one people skip: budget for installation and shipping honestly. A freight truck showing up at a residential address is different from a commercial dock, and a lift arrives on a pallet weighing well over a thousand pounds. Some buyers install their own and do it well; others want us to handle anchoring, shimming, plumbing, and the first-lift safety check.
