A tire-and-alignment shop owner in northwest Iowa walked us through his building last winter with a tape measure in one hand and a bank pre-approval in the other, and the conversation we had is worth writing down. He needed automotive two post lifts that gave his techs clean access to exhaust and driveline work — not just wheels-off tire service — and he needed to know how he was going to pay for two of them without gutting his cash position going into a slow quarter. Start With the Slab, Not the Spec Sheet

Every safety conversation about a two post lift starts underground. The columns transfer the entire load into your concrete through anchor bolts, and if the slab can’t hold the anchors, nothing above it matters. Manufacturers publish minimums — commonly four inches of cured 3,000 PSI concrete, sometimes more for higher capacities — and those are minimums, not targets. We core-test or at minimum drill test holes before we commit to anchor locations. We had a customer in the region tell us his floor was “about five inches, maybe less.” It came in at three and a half in one spot. We saw-cut, poured two footings, waited for cure, and then set the lift. That added days to the timeline and he wasn’t thrilled, but the alternative is a column that walks under load.

Watch for what’s in the slab too. Radiant floor heat is common in newer Iowa shop buildings, and drilling through PEX tubing is a bad afternoon. Old anchor holes from a scrapped lift, control joints, floor drains, and rebar all constrain where columns can go. In alignment bays specifically, you also have to think about whether the two post will share the space with alignment racks or turnplates, and whether the floor is level enough across the bay that a rolling jack or jack stands sit true. We map all of this on paper before anyone picks up a hammer drill, because moving a column after the anchors are set is not a small job.

Asymmetric, Symmetric, and Exhaust Access

For a shop doing exhaust and driveline work alongside tires, arm configuration is the whole ballgame. A symmetric lift centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms — great load balance, but the doors open into the columns and your tech is squeezing past steel to get in and out. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms so the vehicle sits back, which opens the doors and, more importantly for exhaust work, moves the columns out of the way of the mid-body work zone. For a shop pulling flex pipes, cats, and mufflers all day, that clearance is worth real money in tech-hour efficiency.

Then there’s under-vehicle reach. Exhaust and driveline work means you’re on your feet under the middle and rear of the car with a torch or a sawzall, and you want the arms tucked so nothing’s in your swing. Three-stage front arms let you reach the correct lift points on short-wheelbase cars and still service a crew-cab pickup. Telescoping rear arms extend for long wheelbases. Low-profile adapters get you under lowered cars without ramps. Safety Locks, Cables, and What Fails First

A two post lift holds a vehicle in the air with mechanical safety locks, not hydraulics. Hydraulics raise it; the locks hold it. That’s the single most important thing for a shop owner to internalize, because it dictates the daily habit: raise the lift, lower it onto the locks, listen for both sides to engage, then get under it. One customer told us plainly he needed a lift that “won’t drop a car.” Any properly installed and maintained lift from a real manufacturer won’t. What drops cars is skipping the lock engagement, exceeding capacity, or spotting the vehicle badly so the load shifts off the pads.

What fails first, in our experience across hundreds of service calls, is equalizer cables, then lock release mechanisms, then cylinder seals, then power units. Cables stretch and fray, usually starting at the sheave. If you see broken strands, the lift comes out of service that day — not next week. Lock release cables and air cylinders get gummed up with shop dust and stop retracting evenly, which means one side is on a lock and one isn’t. Cylinder seals weep, which you’ll notice as a lift that settles slowly overnight. All of these are stocked parts for us and all of them are cheap compared to a claim. Training Your Techs on Automotive Two Post Lifts

The most common cause of incidents we get called about isn’t equipment failure — it’s spotting. A tech puts the pads under a pinch weld that’s already rotted from ten Iowa winters of road salt, or lifts a front-heavy diesel on an asymmetric lift as if it were a Civic, and the load ends up wrong. On automotive two post lifts, the center of gravity needs to sit between the columns, biased correctly for the configuration you bought. Front-engine, front-heavy vehicles go on differently than a mid-engine car. Every manufacturer publishes lift point references and we go over them at install.

Build a routine and enforce it. Before the first car of the day: walk both columns, look at the cables, check hydraulic fluid, cycle the lift empty, confirm both locks engage audibly. Before going under any vehicle: confirm the pads are seated on manufacturer lift points, raise to working height, lower onto locks, shake the vehicle at the bumper. Annually: full documented inspection, anchor torque check, cable measurement, lock function test. Post the capacity rating where techs can see it and don’t let anyone put a one-ton dually on a 10,000 lb lift because “it’s probably fine.” We’ve written up more than one lift where somebody did exactly that. Training costs nothing and it’s the highest-return safety investment in your shop.

Sizing Capacity for Tires, Alignments, and Light Trucks

Most tire-and-alignment shops in northwest Iowa land on 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity, and the deciding factor is the truck mix. If your bread and butter is cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, 10,000 lb is genuinely adequate — a loaded F-150 is well inside it. If you’re seeing three-quarter-ton and one-ton service trucks, ag support vehicles, and the occasional dually, step to 12,000 or 15,000 lb. Capacity isn’t just about total weight either; it’s about per-arm loading and how the weight distributes when a front-heavy diesel sits on the pads.

We had a shop tell us their heaviest vehicle was 6,000 lbs and they wanted the cheapest thing that would handle it. Fair enough — but we asked what happens when the neighbor’s service truck rolls in, and the answer was “we’d probably do it anyway.” That’s why we quote a tier up when the customer’s real-world mix is broader than their stated maximum. It’s a modest price difference at purchase and it removes a judgment call your techs shouldn’t have to make. Column height matters here too: a taller lift gives your exhaust guys more standing room, but you need the ceiling. Measure to the lowest obstruction — a door track, a light fixture, a heater — not to the peak. Financing Terms: What Shop Owners Actually Sign

Most commercial buyers we work with finance rather than pay cash, and there are three common paths. Equipment financing through a lender that specializes in shop equipment is the most common — terms typically run 24 to 60 months, the equipment itself is the collateral, and approval is usually fast if your business has a couple of years of history and reasonable credit. Rates move with the market, so we don’t quote them here; your lender will. Second path is a bank or credit union term loan, which often carries a better rate if you have a relationship, but takes longer and may want additional collateral. Third is a lease structure, either a fair-market-value lease or a dollar-buyout lease, which keeps monthly payments lower and can have tax treatment advantages worth asking your accountant about.

Section 179 is the piece shop owners most often overlook. Lift equipment placed in service during the tax year generally qualifies for accelerated deduction, which can meaningfully change the after-tax cost of buying automotive two post lifts — especially if you’re buying two bays at once. That’s a conversation for your CPA, not us, but it’s why we see a rush of orders in the fourth quarter every year. If your bays need to be running by December 31 to claim it, order in October, because freight and install scheduling don’t compress.

Payment Schedule and How We Sequence a Two-Bay Project

Here’s how the money and the calendar line up on a typical project with us. A deposit goes down at order — that releases the equipment from the manufacturer and locks your freight slot. Balance on equipment is typically due at or shortly after delivery, and install labor invoices on completion. If you’re financing, the lender usually funds directly against our invoice, so your out-of-pocket at each step is small. For a two-bay job, we’ll often stage it: bay one installed and commissioned while bay two runs, then swap. You lose one bay at a time instead of two, which for a tire shop in the middle of changeover season is the difference between a manageable week and a lost one.

Lead times drive everything else. Popular capacities in common configurations often ship in a week or two; specific column heights, odd capacities, or specialty arm packages can run longer. Concrete work adds cure time you cannot rush — plan on days, not hours. Electrical is usually the easiest thing to schedule and the most commonly forgotten.
