We are based in Ames, Iowa, and we spend a lot of our week driving down to the Des Moines metro to set columns for city garages, county road departments, transit barns, and public works shops that pull transmissions out of pickups, dump trucks, and light-duty vans all year long. Why Transmission Work Changes How You Spec a Two-Post

Transmission service is not the same duty cycle as tire rotations and oil changes. A tech pulling a transmission is going to be under that vehicle with a telescoping jack, wrestling a 250-pound assembly, and shifting the vehicle’s balance point rearward as soon as the driveshaft and crossmember come out. That changes the load math. When we spec automotive two post lifts for a municipal fleet garage doing transmission work, we push for capacity headroom — if the heaviest unit in the fleet is a 9,000 lb one-ton with a service body, we are not selling a 10,000 lb lift. We are selling 12,000 or 15,000. The margin is not about the vehicle weight alone. It is about how far off center the load sits when half the drivetrain is on a cart.

Arm configuration matters just as much. Asymmetric columns rotate the vehicle rearward in the bay and give you door clearance, which is great for passenger cars but can crowd a tech working under a long-wheelbase pickup. Most fleet shops we outfit in the Des Moines metro end up on symmetric or versymmetric setups with three-stage front arms so the truck sits centered and there is walking room on both sides. We also look hard at rise height and overhead clearance, because a transmission jack stacked under a raised chassis needs the vehicle high enough that the tech is not on his knees for four hours. Twelve-foot ceilings and a baseplate model solve a lot of problems that a 14-foot ceiling and an overhead crossbar would solve differently.

Freight Reality: What Actually Arrives on the Truck

Here is what surprises people. A two-post lift does not arrive assembled, and it does not arrive on a lift-gate truck unless somebody specifically ordered and paid for that. What shows up is a common carrier flatbed or dry van with a banded pallet: two columns laid down, an arm bundle, a carriage box, a hardware and hydraulics carton, and sometimes a separate power unit box. Total shipping weight on a 12,000 lb clearfloor unit runs roughly 1,900 to 2,400 pounds depending on the brand and the column height. The columns themselves are the awkward part — long, heavy, and top-heavy once they are standing.

The driver’s job ends at the back of the trailer. That is written into the freight terms on nearly every lift order, and it catches new buyers off guard constantly. A city garage in the metro called us on a Tuesday afternoon because a truck was sitting in their lot with a lift on it and nobody had a forklift rated for the pick. They had a 5,000 lb warehouse forklift, which was plenty of capacity, but the forks were too short to safely get under a nine-foot pallet without tipping the load. We told them to pull the fork extensions off their loader tractor and slide them on. That worked. Better plan: confirm before the ship date that you have a forklift with at least 5,000 lb capacity and 60-inch forks, or arrange lift-gate delivery at order time. It costs a few hundred dollars and saves a bad afternoon.

Inspecting the Shipment Before You Sign

Sign the delivery receipt clean and you have just accepted whatever condition that freight is in. We tell every fleet manager the same thing: walk the pallet before the pen touches the paper. Look at the column tops and bottoms for dents from fork damage. Check that the powder coat on the carriage rails is unmarked, because a gouged rail chews slider blocks. Count the boxes against the packing list — arm pins, hardware kits, and the hydraulic hose bundle are the items that get separated in a cross-dock and then take three weeks to trace.

If anything looks wrong, note it on the bill of lading in writing before signing. “Possible concealed damage, subject to inspection” is a phrase worth memorizing. Freight claims filed against a clean signed receipt almost never get paid, and the carrier knows it. Take photos on your phone while the load is still on the trailer, with the trailer number visible. We have helped shops recover the full cost of a bent column because they had five photos and one line of handwriting. We have also watched a shop eat a damaged power unit because the receiving clerk was in a hurry. When we handle the install ourselves, we usually receive the freight at our Ames facility, inspect it there, and bring it to your site on our own truck — which removes this entire category of headache from your plate.

Unloading and Staging Automotive Two Post Lifts in a Fleet Bay

Once the pallet is on the ground, the sequence matters. Do not stand the columns up early. A free-standing unanchored column is a genuine crush hazard, and we have heard enough near-miss stories from shop owners to take that seriously. Keep both columns flat and blocked until the layout is chalked, the anchor holes are drilled, and you are ready to set and shim in one motion. Two people minimum per column, three if you are moving them by hand across a bay floor.

Staging in a municipal fleet garage has its own quirks. These bays are usually shared, often busy, and sometimes have floor drains, radiant heat tubing, or trench drains running exactly where you want anchors. Before we drill anything we scan the slab. Radiant heat in the floor is common in newer Iowa and Des Moines metro public works buildings, and hitting a PEX loop with a rotary hammer is a repair that will cost more than the lift. A scan takes twenty minutes. We also confirm slab thickness and strength — most automotive two post lifts require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of the 12,000 lb and larger units want six inches. If we core a test plug and find four inches of tired 1970s slab over gravel, the honest answer is a cut-and-pour concrete pad, not a hope-for-the-best anchor job. Nobody likes hearing that. Everybody prefers it to a column that walks under load.

Anchoring, Squaring, and the First Lift

Setting columns is a measurement exercise. We lay out the bay centerline, mark the drive-through width per the manufacturer’s spec sheet, and square the base plates diagonally before a single anchor goes in. Being a half-inch out of square is invisible to the eye and very visible in the way the carriages track. Anchors go to the specified embedment depth, torque to the manufacturer’s number with a real torque wrench, and get shimmed at the base if the slab has any slope — most shop floors slope toward a drain, and shimming is normal, not a defect. We do not stack more than the allowed shim thickness under a base plate. That limit exists for a reason.

Then comes hydraulics, cables, and the equalization setup. Run the power unit, bleed the system, cycle the carriages to full height empty, and check that both sides arrive together. Set the safety locks and listen for clean, simultaneous engagement on every notch. Only after that does a vehicle go on. For the first real lift we like to use a mid-weight fleet unit rather than the heaviest thing in the yard, raise to about eighteen inches, and shake the vehicle at the bumper before going higher. That single habit catches more bad arm placements than any checklist. Every install we do in the Des Moines metro ends with an ANSI-standard inspection, a load test, and a walkthrough with the techs who will actually run the equipment.

Training Fleet Techs on Arm Placement for Transmission Pulls

The most common damage we see on two-post columns in fleet service is not wear. It is arms placed wrong and a vehicle that shifted. Transmission work makes this worse because the center of gravity moves during the job. A tech sets the arms for a loaded truck, pulls the transfer case and transmission, and now several hundred pounds have left the middle of the chassis. If the arms were already set slightly rearward, the vehicle can get light in front.

We train shops to set arms for the vehicle’s condition at the end of the job, not the beginning. Pull the pads a little forward of the factory lift points when the drivetrain is coming out, use tall pad adapters on body-on-frame trucks so the rocker panels clear, and confirm all four arm restraints have clicked before raising. Secondary support stands under the frame are not optional on a long transmission job — they are cheap insurance and they let a tech push and pry without the vehicle rocking. Municipal fleets often rotate techs and hire seasonally, which means the training has to be repeatable, not a one-time conversation. We leave a laminated arm-placement card at the columns and a copy of the operator manual in the shop office. That five-minute routine is what keeps an annual inspection boring, which is exactly what you want it to be.

A well-installed two-post column in a municipal fleet garage should give you fifteen to twenty-five years. What wears out along the way is predictable: lifting cables stretch and eventually fray, slider blocks wear, arm restraint gears round off, hydraulic cylinder seals weep, and power unit motors get tired. None of that is dramatic if you catch it during an annual inspection. All of it is dramatic if you find out because a lock did not set.
