A collector in northern Missouri called us about automotive two post lifts because he had three cars, a dirt-floor problem in one corner of his shop, and a set of exhaust systems he had been putting off for two years. He was not running a business. He just wanted to get under his own vehicles standing up, drop a driveshaft without wrestling it on his back, and quit borrowing a friend’s lift on weekends. What follows is roughly how his first year went — the site walk, the install, the first real job on the machine, the annual service, and the part he needed in month ten. It is a fair picture of what ownership actually looks like for somebody who works on cars because he wants to.

The Site Walk: A Loft on One Side, a Wall on the Other
His building was a pole barn with a sixteen-foot door, a storage loft along the left wall, and a solid wall on the right. That layout is common and it constrains the install more than the capacity question does. A two-post needs symmetric clearance to swing arms and to walk both sides of the vehicle, and the loft dropped the usable ceiling on the left by several feet. We ended up siting the columns toward the center of the bay, which cost him some floor he had been using for a bench, but it gave a full arm swing on both sides and clean overhead room for the beam.
The slab was the bigger unknown. He thought it was around five inches, and told us honestly that it might be less. We cored it. Four and a quarter inches, decent aggregate, no rebar visible in the core. That was workable for a 10,000 lb unit with the right anchors and torque spec, but it was close enough that we told him to keep the heaviest thing he ever put on it to a passenger car or light truck and not to start hoisting a loaded dually. Being straight about margins at the site walk is the whole job. Anyone who quotes automotive two post lifts over the phone without asking about the slab is guessing with your safety.
Choosing Capacity When Nothing You Own Weighs 6,000 lb
His heaviest vehicle was a mid-sixties full-size sedan, right around 4,200 lb. Everything else was lighter. On paper a 9,000 lb unit was more than enough, and he asked why we were pointing him at 10,000. Two reasons. First, capacity is not really about the car you own today — it is about the truck a neighbor asks you to look at, or the project car you buy in five years, or the fact that resale value on a well-known 10,000 lb model is noticeably better than on an off-brand 9,000. Second, the 10,000 lb class typically comes with heavier columns, thicker arms, and better lock hardware, which changes how the machine feels under load even when you are nowhere near the rating.
Where we did not push him was up into 12,000 or 14,000. Those units want more slab, more ceiling, and more money, and for a three-car collection they buy nothing. We see the opposite mistake too — somebody buys a 9,000 lb import with narrow arms and then finds out the pads will not reach the pinch weld pockets on a modern unibody without adapters. Among automotive two post lifts the sweet spot for a home collector is almost always a well-supported 10,000 lb asymmetric with three-stage front arms and screw-up pads, plus a set of truck adapters in the corner for the day you need them. He went that direction and has not mentioned capacity since.
Install Day and the First Week
Install ran one long day. Columns set and plumbed, overhead beam and cables routed, power unit mounted, hydraulic lines run and bled, anchors torqued to spec, locks cycled empty, then cycled with a car, then run to full height and back down a half dozen times. We marked the anchor nuts so a re-check later would be obvious at a glance. His electrician had already pulled a 220V circuit to the column, which saved everyone a return trip — that is the single most common cause of a two-day install turning into a two-week one.
The first week is when people learn the machine. He called twice: once about a slight difference in how the two lock ladders sounded, which turned out to be normal break-in on new pawls, and once because the lift drifted down about a quarter inch overnight with a car on it. That second one is worth explaining. Small settling is normal as new seals and fittings seat, and the correct habit is to lower onto the mechanical locks anytime the car is going to sit — never leave a vehicle held on hydraulic pressure alone. We tell that to every owner on handoff day and repeat it, because with automotive two post lifts the locks are the safety system and the cylinder is just the thing that gets you there.
Exhaust and Driveline Work: What the Bay Actually Gained Him
The first real job was a full exhaust on the sedan — headers back, all of it. On jack stands that is a two-weekend job with a lot of crawling. On the lift he had it out and the new system hung in an afternoon, standing upright the whole time with a bright light and both hands free. That is the practical case for a two-post over anything else: total underbody access with nothing in the way. A four-post has runways under the rockers and a scissor has a frame under the middle of the car, and both of those are exactly where exhaust hangers, transmission crossmembers, and driveshaft center bearings live.
Driveline work made the same point. He pulled a two-piece driveshaft to replace a worn center support bearing, and with the car at chest height he could index the yokes, mark them, and drop the shaft without a helper. Later he did a transmission crossmember and a set of motor mounts. None of that is possible in any comfortable way on a four-post. If your work is storage plus occasional oil changes, a four-post wins. If your work is exhaust, driveline, brakes, suspension, and fuel lines — anything down the centerline of the car — automotive two post lifts are the correct tool and it is not close. Brand History and Why It Still Matters
Collectors care about provenance, and it turns out that instinct serves you well when buying shop equipment. The two-post as we know it traces back to the mid-twentieth century, when inground lifts dominated dealership service and surface-mounted columns were the newcomer. Rotary Lift, founded in Memphis in the mid-1920s and long based in Indiana, essentially wrote the book on the hydraulic automotive lift and has been iterating the same core column-and-carriage design for generations. Challenger came along later out of Louisville and built a reputation on straightforward, serviceable commercial two-posts. On the home and light-commercial side, BendPak and Atlas have decades of volume behind them and parts you can actually get.
Why does the history matter to a guy with three cars? Because a design that has been in continuous production for forty years has forty years of field data behind it, and because the company still exists to sell you a lock pawl in 2031. We regularly get calls about orphaned lifts from brands that vanished — no cable part number, no cylinder dimensions, no lock geometry, nothing. Sometimes we can fabricate or cross-reference. Sometimes the honest answer is that the machine is scrap. When we recommend automotive two post lifts, brand continuity is a real line item in the decision, not marketing loyalty.
The Parts Pipeline: Month Ten
In month ten he snagged an equalization cable on something and put a visible kink in it. He called, described where the damage was, and we shipped a matched pair the same week — you replace cables in pairs, always, because a new cable and an old cable stretch at different rates and you will be chasing synchronization forever. He installed them himself with a phone call for the tensioning procedure and was back in service in an afternoon.

Year One in Review
At the twelve-month mark we came back out for the annual: cable tension and equalization, lock ladder and pawl inspection, hydraulic fluid level and condition, hose and fitting check, arm restraint engagement, pad condition, anchor torque re-check against the marks we made on install day, and columns confirmed plumb. Everything was in spec except one anchor that had relaxed slightly, which is common in the first year and takes about ninety seconds to correct. Total time on site was under an hour.
His own summary was that he wished he had done it five years earlier and that the only thing he would change is siting the columns six inches further from the loft. That is the most common regret we hear, and it is a layout regret, not an equipment regret.
