A two post is a service machine — wheels hang free, suspension droops, and every brake, axle, and exhaust fastener is in front of you at chest height. What settled it was the work itself. His annual ritual was brake service and rotor swaps across six cars, and that job is miserable on a four post unless you add a rolling bridge jack, which costs real money and still leaves the wheels partially obstructed. On a two post, a rotor swap is genuinely pleasant — you’re standing upright, the caliper bracket bolts are at eye level, and you can spin the hub freely to check runout. Month Ten: The Slow Drift Nobody Expects

The lift would raise a car normally, but if he left it up for twenty minutes without setting the mechanical safety locks, it would settle an inch or two. Not fast, not dramatic, but obvious. He wanted to know if the lift was dangerous.
The honest answer is that the mechanical locks are the safety system, not the hydraulics — you always lower onto the locks, every single time, no exceptions. But the drift was still a real fault that needed fixing, and it pointed at one of three things: a leaking check valve or lowering valve in the power unit, an external hose or fitting leak, or internal cylinder seal bypass. Fluid level in the reservoir was steady, which ruled out a gross external loss. That left the valve block or the cylinder itself. He dropped the lift, cracked the power unit, and found the lowering valve seat clean. Rebuilding the Cylinder: What’s Actually Involved

Piston seals, rod seals, wiper rings, and O-rings all live in a hot, high-pressure environment and they harden over time. The rebuild goes like this. Lower the lift fully and support the carriage independently — never work under a carriage held only by hydraulics. Withdraw the rod and piston assembly carefully; a scored bore or a bent rod means you’re buying a cylinder, not rebuilding one. His bore was clean. We shipped a seal kit matched to his bore diameter and rod diameter, he replaced every elastomer in the kit, lubricated everything with clean hydraulic fluid on reassembly, torqued the gland, reinstalled, and bled it thoroughly. Total cost was a small fraction of a new cylinder. Getting the right kit is the whole game — bore, stroke, rod diameter, and gland thread all have to match, which is why we ask for a photo of the serial tag before quoting anything.
What Fluid and Housekeeping Actually Prevent
The thing that kills cylinder seals faster than age is contamination. Grit in the fluid acts like lapping compound on the rod and bore, and once the bore is scored, seals will fail again in months no matter how good the kit is. That’s why the wiper ring on the gland matters so much — it’s the only thing keeping barn dust off the rod as it retracts.
In a pole barn in northeast Iowa, dust is constant. We told him to wipe the exposed rod down with a clean rag every few weeks and to never let the lift sit fully raised for weeks at a time with the rod extended and exposed. Fluid choice matters too: most manufacturers call for ISO 32 or ISO 46 hydraulic oil, and some allow ATF as an alternative. Do not mix them, and do not use whatever is in the drum in the corner. Change the fluid and clean the reservoir screen every two to three years in a home shop.
