He had spent a winter reading forums and had convinced himself the decision was impossibly complicated. It wasn’t. What follows is roughly how that first year went — slab check, install day, the first differential fluid service, and the cylinder seal question that came up right around month eleven.

Why a Collector Chose Two Posts Over a Four Post
He started out certain he wanted a four post. That makes sense on paper — drive on, park, store a second car underneath. But when we walked through what he actually planned to do, the picture changed. He wasn’t storing anything long term. He was doing brakes, exhaust work, suspension bushings, and fluid changes on a rotating cast of four vehicles, and every one of those jobs wants the wheels hanging free. A four post keeps the tires on the runways. That’s great for storage and detailing, and genuinely annoying when you’re trying to pull a hub.
The other factor was floor space. His shop had a workbench wall on one side and an air compressor tucked in the corner, and a four post with runways eats a permanent rectangle whether a car is on it or not. Automotive two post lifts leave the bay floor open when the arms are swung in, so he could roll a project car underneath, use the space for a tire rack in July, and still have clear access to his welding table. We ended up quoting a 10,000 lb asymmetric column setup with three-stage front arms. The Slab Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
Before we talked models, we talked concrete. This is where we lose some sales and we’re fine with that. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb two post, and many spec more — four and a quarter, sometimes six for higher capacities. His pole building slab was poured by a local crew in the early 2000s and nobody had the paperwork. We drilled a test hole. Five and a half inches, good aggregate, no rebar that we hit but solid throughout.
That was a relief, but it isn’t always the story. We had a caller in northern Missouri last year who thought he had five inches and turned out to have somewhere between three and four with a soft top layer that crumbled under the hammer drill. His options were a saw-cut footing pour under each column or a different piece of equipment entirely. We recommended the footing pour, because anchoring a column into marginal concrete is how you end up with a car on its side. If you are shopping automotive two post lifts and you cannot document your slab thickness, drill a hole in an out-of-the-way corner before you spend a dime. It takes ten minutes and it is the single most important number in the whole project. Ceiling height matters too — overhead models generally want 12 feet or better, and baseplate versions exist for shops that can’t clear it.
Install Day and the First Two Weeks
Install on a straightforward 10,000 lb two post in a clean bay runs most of a day for our crew. Layout, drill, set anchors, plumb the columns, run the overhead crossbar and equalization cables, plumb hydraulics, bleed the system, cycle it two dozen times, then torque-check everything again. We set the arm restraints, verified lock engagement at every position, and ran the whole thing up and down empty before a single car touched it.
The first two weeks of ownership are when people learn the equipment’s personality. Our collector called on day four asking why the passenger column seemed to catch slightly on the way down. That was normal slider break-in — new polymer pads on new column tracks, and it settled out inside a month with the slider grease we left him. He called again on day ten because a lock wasn’t dropping cleanly into the second position. That turned out to be a lock cable adjustment that needed a quarter turn after the cables took their initial stretch. Every new lift stretches its cables in the first month or two of use. It is not a defect, it is physics, and it’s exactly why we tell owners to expect one adjustment visit inside the first ninety days. Differential Fluid Service Is the Job That Sells the Lift
Ask a collector what convinced him the money was well spent and it’s rarely the glamorous work. For this owner it was differential fluid. He had a rear-drive coupe and a pickup, both overdue, and he had been putting the job off for two years because doing it on jack stands meant lying in gear oil with a drain pan balanced on his chest. On automotive two post lifts, that same job is standing upright with a light on a magnet base, the fill plug at chest height, and a pump bottle you can actually see.
There’s a practical detail worth knowing: with the wheels hanging free, the differential sits at whatever angle the suspension droops to, which is not level. On a solid axle that usually means the fluid level reads a little differently than it does on the ground. We tell people to fill to the bottom of the fill hole with the axle hanging, then re-check after the vehicle has been driven and sat level for a while. On independent rear ends, the housing is bolted to the subframe and doesn’t move, so you’re fine. He also discovered what everyone discovers — with clear access underneath, you find the other three things that need attention. A seeping pinion seal, a rusted exhaust hanger, a sway bar end link with play. The lift didn’t create those problems. It just stopped hiding them, and that’s genuinely most of the value.
Month Eleven: Hydraulic Cylinder Seals
Around eleven months in, he noticed the lift settling a couple of inches overnight when he left a car up unlocked. He also found a faint film of hydraulic oil on the top of one column. Both of those point the same direction: a cylinder rod seal starting to pass. On a brand-new lift that would be unusual and warranty territory. On his, the columns were new but he had bought a second used two post for the other side of the shop, and that one was the leaker.
Cylinder seal work is very doable and it is where a lot of owners of older automotive two post lifts save real money. A rebuild kit — rod seal, wiper, O-rings, backup rings, sometimes a piston seal — is a modest parts cost compared to a new cylinder assembly. The work involves depressurizing the system, removing the cylinder, pressing out the gland nut, cleaning the bore, inspecting the rod for pitting, and reassembling with the seals oriented correctly. The two things that ruin a rebuild are a scored rod, which will chew a fresh seal in weeks, and dirt introduced during assembly. If the rod is pitted, replace the cylinder. If it’s clean, a rebuild kit brings the unit back to spec. Maintenance That Actually Matters on a Low-Cycle Lift
Collector lifts see a fraction of the cycles a shop lift does, and that changes the maintenance picture in ways people don’t expect. Low use is easier on cables, sliders, and cylinders. It’s harder on hydraulic fluid, which absorbs moisture sitting in an unheated pole building through an Iowa winter, and on anything rubber that dries out without regular movement. We tell low-cycle owners to run the lift through a full up-and-down cycle at least monthly even if nothing needs service, just to keep the seals wet and the cables moving in their sheaves.
The rest is a short list. Monthly: eyeball the cables for broken strands, especially at the sheaves and the anchor ends, and confirm all four locks engage audibly at multiple heights. Quarterly: grease the sliders, check anchor bolt torque, look at the arm restraint gears. Annually: check fluid level and condition, inspect the overhead crossbar and its bolts, and go over the whole structure for cracked welds or paint stress lines at the column base. If your fluid looks milky, change it — water in the system corrodes cylinder bores from the inside and that’s how a rebuildable cylinder becomes scrap. It also helps to keep the area under the columns swept; grit ground into the slider tracks does more wear damage than the cars ever will. What Year One Taught Us About Buying Right
Looking back at that project, three decisions mattered and everything else was noise. Drilling the slab before ordering. Choosing capacity with headroom instead of buying exactly enough. And picking a brand with parts availability, which sounds boring until you need a lock cable for a lift whose manufacturer folded in 2009. We get those calls weekly and sometimes the honest answer is that the part doesn’t exist anymore.
What didn’t matter as much as he expected: color, brand prestige, and the exact horsepower of the power unit. What mattered more than he expected: arm geometry for his specific vehicles, and how easy the lift was to get a low-clearance car onto.
