Automotive two post lifts are the single heaviest, most awkward piece of freight most shops will ever take delivery of, and we get more panicked phone calls about the unloading day than about the installation itself. Last spring a third-generation family garage in western Illinois — grandfather started it, grandson runs the alignment bay now — called us three days before their columns were scheduled to arrive because nobody in the building had thought about how a 2,900 lb crate comes off a 53-foot dry van without a dock. We are based in Ames, Iowa, we drive that freight lane constantly, and we have solved that exact problem hundreds of times. Here is how it actually works, with real numbers.

What Actually Shows Up on the Truck

A standard 10,000 lb clearfloor unit arrives as two or three pieces: a long crate or banded bundle holding both columns, a smaller crate with the arms and hardware, and sometimes a separate carton for the overhead beam and power unit. Column bundles routinely measure 145 to 160 inches long, 30 to 40 inches wide, and 30 to 45 inches tall. Total shipping weight on a 10K clearfloor runs 1,500 to 1,900 lbs. Step up to a 14,000 or 15,000 lb model and you are looking at 2,400 to 3,200 lbs with columns that are taller and thicker-walled.

That western Illinois shop was taking a 14K, and the arms crate alone weighed over 700 lbs. This matters because the carrier is not going to help you. Common freight for automotive two post lifts moves curbside — the driver breaks the seal, drops the tailgate if you paid for a liftgate, and expects the freight on the ground within 30 minutes. If it takes longer, detention charges start. We tell every customer to walk out and physically look at the crate before signing the delivery receipt. Note any bent banding, crushed corners, or oil weeping from the power unit carton right on the paperwork. A signed clean bill of lading with no exceptions makes a damage claim on automotive two post lifts nearly impossible to win, and we have watched shops eat a bent column because somebody scribbled a signature and walked back inside.

Forklift Capacity and Why 5,000 lb Isn’t Enough

People look at a 1,900 lb column bundle and assume their 5,000 lb yard forklift is plenty. It is not, and the reason is load center. Forklift capacity ratings assume the load’s center of gravity sits 24 inches from the face of the forks. A 150-inch column bundle sitting crosswise on standard 42-inch forks has its center of gravity out somewhere around 40 to 50 inches, which can cut effective capacity by 40 percent or more. A 5,000 lb machine may only safely handle 2,800 lbs at that load center — and if the truck bed is 52 inches high, you are lifting with the mast tipped forward, which makes it worse.

Our recommendation for automotive two post lifts is an 8,000 lb rough-terrain or warehouse forklift with 60-inch forks minimum, or a telehandler if you have one available. The family shop in western Illinois borrowed a neighbor’s 8,000 lb telehandler with 72-inch forks and had both bundles on the ground in under 15 minutes. If no forklift exists, the alternative is a liftgate delivery combined with a pallet jack, but liftgate platforms are typically 80 to 96 inches long and a 150-inch bundle will overhang badly. In that case we order the freight to a local terminal, uncrate the columns there, and bring them in on our own trailer. It costs a little more. It costs a lot less than a replacement column.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Alignment Bay Reality

Before a single bolt goes in the floor we want 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum for a 10K, and 6 inches of 3,000 psi for anything at 14,000 lbs or above. Manufacturers spell this out and insurance carriers will read the spec sheet after an incident. We core-drill a small test hole and measure. In older western Illinois and eastern Iowa buildings from the 1950s and 60s we frequently find 3.5 inches over a poorly compacted base, sometimes with radiant tubing nobody documented. When that happens we cut and pour a footing pad — typically 4 feet by 5 feet per column, 12 inches deep, tied to the surrounding slab with rebar dowels, then cured 28 days before anchoring.

Alignment work adds another layer. If the bay is doing alignments, the lift has to be dead level across both runways and front-to-back within the tolerance the alignment machine demands, usually under 1/8 inch over the working length. That means either a set of four-post or a two post with alignment-rated turnplates and slip plates on the arms, plus a laser level session during install rather than a torpedo level and a shrug. We shim column bases with steel shims, never plastic, and re-torque anchors after the first week of use. For alignment-heavy shops we also talk through arm configuration: asymmetric versus symmetric, three-stage front arms for reach on shorter wheelbases, and whether the tech needs to open doors fully with a truck on the pads.

Ceiling Height, Door Headers, and the 139-Inch Problem

We had a North Dakota customer last year with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit — trusses, sprinkler main, no negotiating. That number rules out most overhead-beam configurations, which generally want 12 feet to 12 feet 6 inches of clear height, and pushes you straight to a baseplate or floorplate design. Baseplate two post lifts run the hydraulic hose and equalizer cables through a low channel across the floor instead of an overhead beam, so ceiling height stops being the constraint and lift height becomes the trade-off.

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak. Sprinkler heads, gas heater flues, garage door tracks and openers, and light fixtures all count. On a clearfloor unit with an overhead beam we need the beam height plus the shutoff bar clearance, and on a raised vehicle the tallest point of the truck plus a few inches. In a 12-foot side wall pole building — a very common central Iowa and western Illinois shop — a 10K clearfloor typically fits, but a raised full-size crew cab may only have inches to spare. This is why we ask for a photo of the ceiling and the door header before quoting automotive two post lifts, and why we ask for the tallest vehicle you actually service, not the tallest one you own.

Sequencing the Install Day

The order of operations matters more than most people expect. We chalk the bay layout first: column centerline spacing, bay width, distance to the wall, and where the power unit lands relative to the electrical drop. Then we drill. Then we stand columns, set the carriage and cables, hang the overhead beam or lay the floor channel, mount the power unit, plumb the hydraulics, and bleed the system. Arms go on last so nobody trips over them all morning.

A typical two-tech install on a 10K clearfloor is five to seven hours if the concrete is good and the power is already run. A 14K or 15K unit is a full day. Add half a day if we are coring test holes, and add a separate trip if we have to pour a footing pad. Electrical is where schedules die: most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit, and three-phase units need the right voltage confirmed before we show up. We ask shops to have an electrician on site or already finished. At that western Illinois garage the grandson had the circuit pulled and labeled a week ahead, and we were doing a test cycle with a shop truck on the arms by 3 p.m. That is what a smooth day looks like with automotive two post lifts, and it starts with planning, not with the truck arriving.

Freight Damage, Backorders, and Lead Times

Roughly one in twenty shipments we handle arrives with something wrong. Usually it is cosmetic — scraped paint on a column, a crushed hardware carton. Occasionally it is real: a bent arm, a cracked power unit reservoir, sheared cable ends. Photograph everything before uncrating, then again as you go. Manufacturers want photos of the crate, the damage, and the shipping label with the pro number visible. Handled right, a replacement column ships in a week or two. Handled wrong, you are arguing for months.

Lead times swing with the season and with capacity. Standard 10K models in common colors usually ship within one to three weeks. Higher-capacity units, specialty arm packages, and inground equipment can run six to twelve weeks. Spring and early summer are the busiest stretch in the Midwest, so a shop planning a summer bay expansion should be ordering in February. What We Ask Before We Quote

Every quote we write starts with the same short list. Heaviest vehicle you service, and be honest — a shop that says 6,000 lbs but occasionally does a three-quarter-ton diesel needs a 12K, not a 10K. Bay width and length. Ceiling height to the lowest obstruction. Slab thickness and age, plus whether there is radiant tubing or post-tension cable. Available power: voltage, phase, amperage, and how far the panel sits from the bay. Door header height and width. And whether a forklift will be on site the day the freight lands.

That last question saves the most money.
