Why a Mobile Mechanic Finally Buys a Lift

The job that broke him was a rear shock and coil spring replacement on a lifted half-ton in a gravel driveway in February. Jack stands on gravel, wind chill in the single digits, a spring compressor he did not fully trust, and three hours of work that should have taken 50 minutes. He told us he had turned down four suspension jobs that month because he could not do them safely on-site. Turning down work you know how to do is the clearest signal it is time to stop being fully mobile.

Suspension and shock work is uniquely hostile to driveway service. You need the wheels hanging free to unload the springs, you need room to swing a long breaker bar on rusted lower control arm bolts, and in Iowa you need heat and a torch because every fastener under a ten-year-old vehicle is welded shut with road salt. None of that happens on a customer’s driveway. He kept the van and the mobile business for diagnostics, batteries, and brakes, but the heavy stuff needed to come inside. What he wanted was the cheapest path to a real bay, and that meant understanding what a lift costs across its whole life rather than on day one.

Purchase Price Is the Smallest Number in the Equation

People fixate on the sticker. Installation runs a meaningful fraction of the lift price depending on distance, whether you need concrete work, and whether the building needs an electrical drop. His leased bay had a 100-amp panel and no 220 circuit near the bay, so an electrician ran a dedicated 20-amp 220V line — a few hundred dollars. His slab was six inches of decent commercial concrete poured in the 1990s, which we core-tested and cleared, so he avoided the several-hundred-dollar pad pour that a lot of buyers face. Roughly, you should budget the cost of the lift again in parts and service over two decades. That sounds alarming until you divide it by 240 months. Downtime Is the Line Item That Actually Hurts

For a one-man shop, a lift down is a shop down. The Numbers After Year One

Twelve months in, his actual spend beyond installation has been one gallon of hydraulic fluid, a tube of grease, one annual inspection, and a set of replacement rubber lift pads after the originals got chewed up on rocker panels. That is it. Meanwhile his billable hours went up substantially because suspension and shock jobs he used to decline now come into the bay, and each one takes roughly half the time it did on stands.

He is also doing work he never advertised. With a vehicle in the air he started catching worn sway bar end links, cracked control arm bushings, and leaking rack boots on cars that came in for something else. Those became estimates and most of them became jobs. The mobile van still runs three days a week for diagnostics and roadside, but the bay carries the margin now.
