The myth that a drifting lift always means a bad cylinder
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the business. A shop notices the vehicle creeping down, immediately assumes the hydraulic cylinder has failed internally, and starts shopping for a replacement assembly. Sometimes that is correct. Far more often, what has actually failed is a rod seal, a wiper, or an O-ring at the gland nut — parts that cost a fraction of a cylinder and come packaged together in a rebuild kit specific to your bore and rod diameter. On a European specialty shop’s equipment, where the lift is cycling twenty-plus times a day for exhaust and driveline access, seals wear on a predictable schedule. They are consumables, not catastrophes.
The other suspect nobody checks first is the flow control or velocity fuse in the hydraulic circuit, and after that the lowering valve itself. A valve seat that will not seal because a speck of debris got past a tired filter will bleed a column down slowly and mimic a cylinder failure perfectly. We diagnose it by isolating the line: if the drift stops when the line is closed off, the cylinder is fine and the problem is upstream at the power unit. Why European-marque work is harder on cylinders than general repair
A shop doing exhaust and driveline access on European cars uses its lift differently than a general repair shop doing brakes and tires. That means the cylinder is holding load at or near full extension for hours at a stretch, and the rod is exposed to the full length of its travel where dust, brake dust, and undercoating residue collect. Every raise drags whatever is on that rod back past the wiper seal and into the gland.
On top of that, European exhaust systems and subframes tend to be heavier and more awkward than domestic equivalents, and technicians frequently lift with the vehicle slightly off-center to gain access to one side. Uneven loading is what turns a slow seal wear pattern into a fast one, because the rod runs against the bushing rather than through it cleanly. We see the wear scar on the rod when we pull a cylinder out of these shops, and it is almost always on one side. This is not a defect in automotive two post lifts, it is simply what happens when equipment gets used hard in one particular way. The fix is a rebuild schedule, not a new lift.
Rebuild kit or replacement cylinder: how we actually decide
The decision comes down to the condition of three surfaces: the bore, the rod, and the gland threads. Chrome plating condition matters more than most people think. A rod that has started to flake chrome acts like sandpaper on a new seal set. Bore corrosion is the other disqualifier; if hydraulic fluid sat with water in it for a couple of years, the inside of that tube will be etched and no seal will conform to it. Our recommendation is straightforward: check fluid level monthly, change it every two to three years in a busy shop, and use an AW-32 or AW-46 anti-wear hydraulic oil unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise — some units call for ATF and mixing them is a bad idea. Change the suction filter or screen at the same time. This one habit will roughly double the service life of the cylinder seals in automotive two post lifts, and it costs less than one service call. We also check the breather cap, because a plugged breather will pull a vacuum and cavitate the pump, which sounds like a growl on the way up and is the last warning you get before something expensive happens. Cables, chains, and sheaves: the parts that fail alongside seals
When we open a column to service a cylinder, we inspect the equalizer cables or chains at the same time, because the same neglect that killed the seals has usually been working on them too. On a chain-drive design, we are looking for stretch and for tight links that will not articulate. On a cable design, we look for broken strands at the sheave contact point and at the swaged end fittings, plus any sign that a sheave has developed a groove or seized on its bushing. A frozen sheave saws through cable strands quietly and quickly.
Here is the thing about equalizer cables that catches shops off guard: they do not carry the vehicle’s weight. Their job is to keep the two carriages level with each other. So a cable can be badly worn and the lift will still raise a car perfectly well — right up until it fails and one carriage runs away from the other. Concrete, anchors, and the foundation myth

A column that is not solidly anchored flexes microscopically under load, and that flex transfers straight into the carriage, the rod alignment, and eventually the gland. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many of the higher-capacity models want more. We run into shops where a mail carrier’s outbuilding or a converted pole barn has three and a half inches over questionable base, and we are honest about it: either we cut and pour a proper pad, or we spec a lift the slab can actually support. Anchor torque should be checked annually with a torque wrench, not a guess and a breaker bar.
