Most of the trouble we see with automotive two post lifts doesn’t happen during installation — it happens in the ninety minutes between the freight truck pulling up and the columns standing on the slab. A tire-and-alignment shop owner in Davenport called us a couple seasons back on a Thursday afternoon because a 10,000 lb lift was sitting on a flatbed in his gravel lot, the driver had a two-hour window, and the shop forklift was rated for less than the crated column weight. That is a bad afternoon. We got him sorted, but it cost him a day and a chunk of goodwill with the carrier. This is the walkthrough we wish every shop had read first: how the freight actually arrives, what your forklift needs to handle, and how to inspect before you sign.

What Actually Shows Up on the Truck

A two-post lift does not arrive as one tidy box. Typically you get two crated or banded columns, a carriage/arm bundle, a hardware and hydraulics carton, and the overhead crossbar or baseplate channel depending on configuration. Total shipping weight for a 10,000 lb capacity unit usually lands somewhere in the 1,400 to 1,900 lb range. A 12,000 or 15,000 lb model can push past 2,400 lb. The heaviest single piece is almost always one column with the carriage already inside it, and that piece is what dictates your unloading plan. It’s long, top-heavy once you tip it, and unforgiving if you get a strap in the wrong place.

Freight for automotive two post lifts almost always moves LTL on a flatbed or a van trailer without a liftgate, because liftgates are rated well below what these columns weigh. That means the carrier expects you to unload. If your shop has a dock, great — but even then, the pallet jack under a column bundle needs to be a heavy-duty unit, not the aluminum one you use for tire pallets. If you don’t have a dock, you need a forklift on site at delivery time, and the driver is not going to wait while you call around. Forklift Capacity, Fork Length, and Where to Pick

People assume a 5,000 lb forklift handles anything on the truck because the heaviest piece is under 1,200 lb. That’s the wrong math. Forklift capacity ratings are given at a specific load center — usually 24 inches. A column bundle that’s ten feet long with the weight distributed unevenly can put the effective load center way out past that, and your real capacity drops fast. On top of that, forks under a long column need to reach at least two-thirds of the bundle length or the whole thing pivots. We’ve watched a column slide off short forks and land on a concrete apron. It bent a carriage rail and turned a routine delivery into a warranty claim.

Our practical rule for automotive two post lifts: use a forklift rated 6,000 lb or better, with 60-inch forks minimum, and strap the load to the carriage before you lift. If all you have is a 4,000 lb yard machine with 42-inch forks, borrow something bigger or arrange for us to bring equipment. Set the columns down flat on their sides on the shop floor, on cribbing or scrap 4x4s, not standing upright against a wall. An upright unsecured column is a genuinely dangerous object — it’s heavy, narrow-footed, and it will not tip slowly. We block ours down every single time, even for an hour.

Inspecting the Shipment Before You Sign

The delivery receipt is a legal document. Once you sign it clean, proving damage happened in transit gets very difficult and the freight carrier knows it. Walk the load before the driver hands you the pen. Look at the crating for crush marks, forklift punctures through the sides, and oil staining that suggests the power unit or a hose got pinched. Count the pieces against the bill of lading — a missing hardware carton is more common than a damaged column, and that carton is what holds your anchor bolts, arm pins, and cable ends. Without it your install stalls out for a week.

If you see anything, write it on the receipt in specific language: “column crate crushed at base, possible carriage damage” beats “damaged.” Take photos with the trailer in the frame. Then call us. We handle freight claims on the equipment we sell and we’d rather start that process the same day than three weeks later when you finally uncrate everything. This is also the argument for buying from a distributor who installs rather than a marketplace listing — when a shipment shows up wrong, you want someone who ships this stuff weekly making the phone calls. Concrete, Anchors, and Why the Slab Comes First

Freight logistics get all the attention on delivery day, but the slab decides whether the lift is safe for the next fifteen years. We’ve had callers tell us their concrete is “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole conversation. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many of the 12,000 lb and heavier units want six inches. Thickness alone isn’t enough either — the pour needs to be reasonably level, free of major cracks near the anchor pattern, and old enough to be fully cured, which realistically means 28 days.

If you’re in an older Davenport building with unknown slab history, core drilling two test holes is cheap insurance compared to pulling anchors under load. Heated floors are another one to flag early: radiant tubing in the slab means you either scan and dodge or you cut and pour dedicated footings. We ask about it on every quote because nobody wants to find PEX with a hammer drill. And if the concrete simply isn’t there, that’s a solvable problem — sawcut a pad section, pour a proper footing, and wait. Rushing anchor installation into thin or green concrete is the single most common reason we get called out to re-anchor automotive two post lifts a year or two down the road.

Ceiling Height, Door Clearance, and the Overhead Decision

A shop owner in the Quad Cities area told us he had “plenty of ceiling” and then measured 11 feet 6 inches to the bottom of a truss. That’s workable for a baseplate-style two-post but tight to impossible for a standard overhead model, which typically needs somewhere around 12 to 13 feet depending on the manufacturer and column height. Overhead units keep the floor clean, which matters enormously if you’re rolling transmission jacks and oil drains around all day. Baseplate models trade a floor-level channel for the ability to live under a low ceiling or an existing door track.

For the oil pan gasket work this Davenport shop does constantly, the floor plate on a baseplate unit is a minor nuisance — a drain pan cart hangs up on it a few times a week. For a tire shop rolling heavy tire changers and balancers between bays, it’s a bigger deal. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: lights, heaters, garage door openers, and the door in the open position all count. We’ve also seen a 16-foot overhead door where the track hung low enough to conflict with the crossbar. Choosing Capacity Without Overbuying or Underbuying

The most common question we field is whether 10,000 lb is enough. For a shop working passenger cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, yes — comfortably. Where it gets interesting is three-quarter-ton and one-ton diesels, dually work trucks, and the newer full-size EVs, which are heavier than their gas equivalents by several hundred pounds. If more than an occasional vehicle in your mix is over 8,000 lb curb weight, step up to 12,000 or 15,000. The price difference between capacity tiers is real but modest compared to the cost of being the shop that turns away the fleet account.

Arm configuration matters as much as raw capacity. Low-profile front arms let you get under lowered cars and modern sedans with tight pinch weld clearance, and three-stage arms give you the reach for longer wheelbases. What Our Delivery and Install Day Looks Like

When we handle the whole job, delivery day is boring, and boring is the goal. We schedule the freight to our own dock or bring the equipment on our truck, we arrive with the forklift and the anchor gear, and we set the columns, plumb them, torque anchors to spec, route hoses, bleed the hydraulics, and cycle the lift under load before we leave. We test every safety lock position, verify the equalization cables are properly tensioned, and hand you the manual with the anchor torque values written on the first page. Then we walk your techs through daily and monthly checks.

Some customers want to install themselves, and that’s fine — plenty of capable people do it well. If that’s you, at minimum get a real hammer drill, a torque wrench, and a second person, and don’t skip the shim-and-plumb step. Columns that are out of plumb wear carriage slides unevenly and load the anchors in shear instead of tension. And whether we install or you do, get on a schedule for annual inspection.
