Start With The Job, Not The Price Tag
The Marion hobbyist who called us last fall wanted a lift primarily for wheel bearing service on a pair of older trucks and his wife’s crossover. That’s a specific job, and it shapes the purchase more than most people realize. Wheel bearing work means the wheels come off, the hubs get pulled, and you’re often leaning into the fender well with a slide hammer while the vehicle is up. You want the car high enough to stand under comfortably, you want arms that swing clear of your work area, and you want a machine that doesn’t flex when you’re putting lateral force on a hub. That’s a different requirement than someone who just wants oil changes done standing up.
Once you’ve named the job, the capacity question mostly answers itself. A hobbyist working on passenger cars and half-ton pickups is fine on 10,000 lb. Somebody with a three-quarter-ton diesel and a plan to eventually do a dually should be looking at 12,000 or 15,000. We tell people to buy for the heaviest vehicle they’ll own in ten years, not the one in the driveway today, because the price difference between capacities on new automotive two post lifts is smaller than the cost of replacing the whole thing in five years. Capacity is cheap at purchase and expensive as a regret.
The Concrete Question Comes Before The Lift Question
We won’t quote an install until we know what’s under the slab, and neither should you. A two-post needs a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want more than that at higher capacities — many 12,000 and 15,000 lb units call for six inches. Age matters too. Concrete needs to be fully cured, which in practice means at least 28 days old, and honestly we prefer to see a slab that’s been down a season. A garage floor poured in the 1970s with unknown thickness and a lot of surface cracking is a gamble.
The cheap way to find out is to drill a test hole in the spot where a column would land and measure the depth with a bent piece of wire. That takes fifteen minutes and a hammer drill. We had a customer in a rural Iowa shop tell us his floor was five inches — it turned out to be three and a half over gravel in the corner where he wanted the driver-side column. He ended up cutting and pouring two footings, which added a day and some cost but saved him from a lift that would have loosened its anchors within a year. If the slab isn’t right, no amount of money spent on the lift itself fixes it. This applies equally to new and used automotive two post lifts; the machine doesn’t care where you bought it, only what it’s bolted to.
Ceiling Height, Door Height, And The Overhead Versus Baseplate Call

The trade-off is the plate on the floor: you step over it, you roll a jack over it, and it collects dirt. Most people adapt within a week. We handled a call from an out-of-state buyer with a 139-inch maximum ceiling who had already figured out he needed baseplate before he called — that’s the right instinct. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak, and remember garage door tracks and opener rails count. What We Actually Inspect On A Used Automotive Two Post Lift

Cables come next, and this is where a lot of used deals die. We look for broken strands at the sheaves, corrosion, flat spots, and any sign the cables have been running dry. Equalization cables are wear items with a service life, and on a machine of unknown age you should simply budget for a new set. Same with the hydraulic cylinder — we look for weeping at the rod seal and check whether the lift drifts down when loaded and parked. Finally, we want the data plate. No plate means no model number, no manual, and a genuine hassle sourcing parts. We can cross-reference a lot, but a nameless lift from a defunct importer is a parts problem forever, and we’ll tell you that honestly rather than sell you a bad rebuild.
The Real Cost Math On Used Versus New
Here’s the framework we use, and it’s not romantic. Take the used asking price and add what it’ll cost to make the unit right: a cable set, arm restraint parts, slide blocks, hydraulic hoses, fluid, and new concrete anchors — you always use new anchors, never the ones that came out of the old floor. Then add removal and transport. Two-post columns are heavy and awkward; getting one out of somebody’s garage and into yours usually means a trailer, a couple of strong friends, and an engine hoist or forklift. Then add install and certification if you want it done properly.
When you total that up, a lot of used deals land within a few hundred dollars of a new entry-level unit with a warranty, a manual, and parts availability. That’s not always true — we’ve seen genuinely clean, low-hour commercial units come out of dealership closures at prices that make total sense, and we’re happy to help someone buy one. But the average Marketplace listing is a fifteen-year-old machine of unclear origin with tired cables. Our rule of thumb: if the used price plus refurbishment plus moving exceeds about sixty percent of new, buy new. Among new automotive two post lifts the entry tier is more accessible than most hobbyists expect, and financing a known-good machine beats owning a mystery.
Installation, Anchoring, And Why We Don’t Skip The Torque Wrench
Plenty of capable people install their own lift, and we’re not going to pretend it’s impossible. But there are a handful of steps where being off by a little produces a machine that’s unsafe in a way you won’t notice until it matters. Column plumb is the big one. If a column leans even slightly, the carriage binds, wear accelerates on one side, and the lift will start to feel notchy. Shims go under the base plate, not under one corner of it, and you check plumb in two directions with a good level before final torque.
Anchors need to be the manufacturer-specified diameter and embedment, set in a clean hole — blow the dust out, every hole — and torqued to spec with an actual torque wrench, then re-checked after the first few cycles. Cable tension has to be equalized so both carriages arrive at the same height, and the safety locks need to engage simultaneously on both columns. We check lock timing on every install and on every service call.
