A trailer and RV service shop in the Quad Cities called us about automotive two post lifts in late winter, which is the smartest time of year to call. Their business ran on two things: chassis and brake work on towables and Class C motorhomes, and seasonal storage for customers who wanted their toys off the ground from November to April. They had been doing everything on the floor with bottle jacks and cribbing for eleven years. What follows is how that first year actually went — the certification conversation, the site survey, install day, the mistakes, and the first service call at month nine. We are writing it out because prospective buyers rarely get to see the full arc before they commit.

Month zero: why ALI Gold came up first
The shop’s owner opened with capacity and price. We steered the first ten minutes toward certification instead, because for a commercial shop with employees and an insurance carrier, that decision constrains everything else. ALI — the Automotive Lift Institute — runs a third-party certification program in which an independent lab validates that a lift model actually meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard: load testing, structural verification, safety device function, and a factory audit that continues after the initial listing. Certified models carry the ALI Certified label with a gold-colored ALI mark, which is where the shorthand “ALI Gold” comes from.
Here is why it mattered to this particular business. Their liability carrier asked, in writing, whether shop equipment met recognized national safety standards. Iowa and Illinois OSHA inspectors reference manufacturer specifications and recognized standards during walkthroughs. And when a technician is under a 9,000 lb motorhome chassis, the difference between a manufacturer’s own claimed rating and an independently validated one is not academic. We told the owner plainly that plenty of uncertified equipment on the market works fine for years — and that we still would not put it in a commercial bay with employees under it. Month one: the site survey nobody wants to pay for
The survey took two hours and changed the order. The plan had been a 12,000 lb overhead unit in the north bay. We measured 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom of a sprinkler main that crossed exactly where the overhead beam wanted to live, and moving the sprinkler head would have meant a licensed contractor, a permit, and a shutdown. So we moved to a baseplate configuration, which runs the equalization cables and hydraulic lines across the floor rather than overhead and drops the required ceiling height significantly.
We also cored the slab in five places. The building was a 1980s pour and the results ranged from 4.5 to 6 inches of what looked like good aggregate, comfortably inside spec for the model with room to spare. That is not always the outcome — we have surveyed buildings in the Quad Cities where a beautiful epoxy floor was hiding three inches over sand, and the honest answer was a saw-cut and repour before anything got anchored. The third finding was power. The intended bay had a single 110V circuit and a shop light. The power unit needed a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit, so an electrician came in ahead of delivery. Skipping the survey to save a few hundred dollars is how people end up with a crated lift sitting in a bay for three weeks. On automotive two post lifts especially, ceiling obstructions and electrical are the two failure points, and both are invisible on a phone call.
Month two: install day, hour by hour
The truck arrived at 7:30 and the crate came off with the shop’s own forklift, which we always ask about in advance because a lot of trailer shops have one and a lot do not. Columns out, hardware inventoried, layout chalked. We snapped the drive-through centerline first, then squared the column bases off it and checked the diagonal measurement — if the diagonals do not match, the carriages will not rise plumb and you will be replacing slide blocks in two years instead of ten.
Anchor drilling took the longest. We hit rebar on the third hole in the passenger-side base, relocated within the hole pattern, and moved on. Anchors got set and torqued to the manufacturer’s number, with steel shims under the base plates to plumb the columns against the bay’s drainage slope — never wood, never composite, and never more shim than the manual permits. Then the overhead-free baseplate channel got dropped in, cables routed and tensioned, hoses run, power unit mounted, and the reservoir filled. Cycling came next: six full runs empty, bleeding air out of the cylinders, verifying that both carriages arrived at the top within tolerance of each other, then loading a shop pickup and testing the mechanical locks at four different heights. We finished at 4:15, walked the owner and both techs through the daily pre-use check, and left the manual, the ALI safety materials, and the ANSI-required warning placards mounted on the columns. That last item gets ignored constantly and it is a genuine requirement.
Months three through six: what the shop learned about capacity
The 12,000 lb unit was the right call and the owner admitted he had been about to buy a 10,000 lb model to save money. RV and trailer work is deceptive. A Class C on a cutaway van chassis can scale over 11,000 lb loaded, and customers bring them in loaded — full water tank, full propane, a generator, and everything they own in the cabinets. We tell every RV shop to size to the worst case a customer will actually drive in the door, not to the dry weight on the door sticker.
The other lesson was arm geometry. Long-wheelbase vehicles want symmetric column placement and long-reach rear arms, which is the opposite of what a car-focused shop needs. They also bought a truck adapter set on our recommendation and used it constantly, because RV frame rails often sit higher than a standard pad stack can reach and the factory pickup points are not where an automotive tech expects them. What did not work was trying to lift bumper-pull trailers on it — a two-post grabs frame points on a self-propelled vehicle, and a tandem-axle trailer with no front wheels is not that. They kept a set of jack stands and a beam for trailer work, which is the correct answer. Months seven and eight: seasonal storage season
November is when a Quad Cities RV shop makes real money on storage, and the owner had assumed the new lift would help there. It helped less than he expected, and understanding why saves other shops a bad purchase. A two-post holds a vehicle by the frame with arms under it and is designed for service access, not long-term parking. You cannot get out from under it with the vehicle still supported, and the arms occupy the exact space you would want for the next unit. For stacked storage, a four-post is the tool — drive on, lock, drive another vehicle underneath.
Where the two-post did earn money during storage season was prep and de-winterization work: undercarriage inspections, brake service before the trailer went into the barn, chassis lube, fluid changes, and rust treatment on frames that had eaten a Midwestern winter of road salt. Two hundred storage customers each needing an underbody look means a lot of quick lifts, and doing that at eye level instead of on a creeper is the whole point. By February they had added a second bay conversation, and we quoted them a four-post specifically for the storage side. Month nine: the first service call
The call came on a Tuesday. One carriage was rising about an inch and a half behind the other, and the lock pawls were engaging unevenly with an audible clunk on the way up. The owner had done the right thing: he stopped using it and called instead of adjusting something himself. Our tech was there the next morning.
The cause was routine and predictable — equalization cable stretch. New cables seat and stretch during the first several hundred cycles, and the manufacturer’s break-in adjustment is spelled out in the manual. Our tech re-tensioned both cables to spec, verified carriage sync at four heights, re-torqued every anchor (three had backed off slightly, which is completely normal in the first year as concrete relaxes around the wedges), greased the slide blocks, and inspected the cables end to end for fraying at the sheaves. Total time on site: under two hours, no parts. That is what a first-year service call on a properly installed, certified lift usually looks like. What it does not look like is a cable that snapped because nobody looked at it for four years. Three things, in order. First, decide on certification before you shop, because it narrows the field honestly rather than tempting you with a cheap number you will second-guess later. ALI certification is not marketing — it is an independent lab and an ongoing factory audit, and your insurance carrier may well ask about it. Second, pay for the site survey. Ceiling obstructions, slab thickness, and available electrical are the three things that turn a two-day project into a two-month one, and all three are cheap to verify in advance.
Third, size for your worst-case vehicle and buy the adapters. Capacity is the least expensive upgrade you will ever make on the front end and the most expensive mistake to fix later — nobody has ever called us regretting that they bought a 12,000 lb unit instead of a 10,000. Beyond that, the ownership experience is genuinely undramatic if you do the small things: daily visual check before the first lift, monthly fluid and cable look, quarterly anchor torque, annual certified inspection.
