Why a Lube Shop Adding Wheel Bearing Work Needs a Two-Post, Not a Four-Post

A four-post lift is a wonderful thing for storage, alignment, and long-vehicle work. It is a terrible thing for wheel bearings. The wheels sit on runways, which means every wheel-off job requires a rolling bridge jack, a second lifting motion, and a technician crouched under a raised vehicle fishing for a jack point. For a lube operator whose whole business model is cycle time, that’s dead labor. Automotive two post lifts pick the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and leave all four wheels hanging in free air. Hub caps come off, calipers come off, the rotor spins, and the tech never repositions anything.

The southeast Iowa operator we worked with runs three bays. He kept two configured for fluids and converted the third into what he calls the “anything else” bay. So when a manufacturer publishes a cable inspection interval, treat that as a floor, not a target. The temptation is always to buy the cheapest thing that will lift the weight. Then there’s power. Most single-phase 10,000 lb power units want a dedicated 220V circuit; three-phase shops have their own considerations. If your panel is full or the bay is on the far end of a pole building, an electrician’s bill can rival the concrete. Installation labor itself is the most predictable piece — a straightforward clearfloor set on good concrete with power already present is a day’s work for a two-person crew. Add complexity for overhead assemblies, low ceilings requiring baseplate conversions, or bays with obstructions like the loft-on-one-side situation another caller described. Layout, Ceiling Height, and the Bay You Actually Have

The two measurements that kill more deals than price are ceiling height and bay width. Clearfloor models carry the equalizer cables and hoses overhead, which means you need clearance above the raised vehicle plus the crossbar assembly — realistically 12 feet minimum for comfortable use, and taller if you’re servicing anything with a roof rack or a tall van. A caller in North Dakota had 139 inches to work with and correctly identified that he’d need a baseplate model instead. Baseplate units run the cables and hoses through a low channel between the columns, so your ceiling constraint disappears and your floor constraint appears — you drive over a small ramp every time.

Width matters just as much. Column spacing plus door swing plus a tech’s ability to walk around the vehicle with a transmission jack adds up fast. A caller in California with an 18-foot minimum and “a lot of room” is in great shape. The mail-route customer in Missouri with a loft on the left and a wall on the right is not — that’s a bay where we’d measure twice, check which side the power unit mounts on, and possibly flip the column orientation. Certification, Maintenance, and Making the Investment Last

Once the lift is set and running, the ongoing cost is small but not zero, and skipping it is expensive. We recommend annual inspection to ANSI/ALI standards for any commercial bay — that’s not just a liability box to check, it’s the mechanism by which you find a stretched cable or a worn lock dog before it fails with a customer’s Tahoe in the air. For a franchise lube operator, there’s an additional wrinkle: your franchisor and your insurer both may require documented annual inspection, and a lapse can affect coverage. Day-to-day maintenance is genuinely simple. Keep the columns clean and the slider surfaces lubricated per the manual. Check hydraulic fluid level and look for weeping at the cylinder rod. Cycle the locks and listen — a lift should click crisply through the lock ladder, and a mushy or skipped engagement is a service call, not a wait-and-see. Grease the swing arm pivots. Inspect the arm restraint gears for rounding. None of that takes more than fifteen minutes a month, and it’s the difference between a lift that runs 20 years and one that starts giving trouble at eight.
