Line One: The Equipment Itself
Equipment is the biggest single line but rarely more than about two-thirds of the delivered-and-running total. For a truck shop, capacity drives price hard. A 10,000 lb unit handles pickups and light-duty vans and sits at the bottom of the range. Step to 12,000 lb and you gain margin for three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks with a service body. Go to 15,000 or 18,000 lb and you’re into taller columns, heavier arms, larger cylinders, and a meaningfully higher price — often close to double the 10,000 lb tier.
The owner we worked with in southeast Iowa initially spec’d 12,000 lb because that’s what his heaviest current customer needed. We pushed him to 15,000 lb after asking what work he was turning away. He was declining medium-duty brake jobs weekly. The extra capacity cost real money up front but it changed which vehicles could enter the building, and that’s revenue, not vanity. Line Two: Freight, and Why It Bites
A two-post lift ships as columns, carriage assemblies, arms, a power unit, and a hardware crate. Even a 10,000 lb model runs well over a thousand pounds of freight; a 15,000 lb unit is considerably more. It moves on a flatbed or a van with a liftgate, and the cost swings on your location, your dock situation, and diesel prices that month.
Two things surprise buyers. First, residential and no-dock deliveries cost more, and “no-dock” includes most rural shops. If you don’t have a forklift or a telehandler on site, you need a liftgate truck, and liftgate service adds a line. The truck shop we worked with had a forklift, which saved him a couple hundred dollars right there. Second, freight damage happens, and how you handle the first ten minutes decides whether it’s covered. Inspect the crates before you sign, photograph anything bent or gouged, and note it on the bill of lading. We’ve had a column arrive with a dented top cap and the resolution was painless because the driver’s paperwork said so. Line Three: Concrete and Site Prep

The fix is a saw-cut footing pad: cut out a square at each column location, dig, form, pour a proper pad to spec, and let it cure before anchoring. Budget a modest four-figure add for a two-column pad job including cure time, which will typically be the second-largest line on the whole project if you need it. You also want to know about in-floor heat before anybody touches a hammer drill. We’ve been called to a shop where a previous installer clipped a heat loop and the repair cost more than the anchors did. Test-drill in a corner, measure your slab, and map your heat before ordering. On the paperwork side, a written concrete assessment protects both of us — it’s the difference between a fixed install price and a change order on install day.
Line Four: Installation and Startup
Installation on a two-post is typically a one-day job for a two-person crew when the site is ready: unload, lay out and verify column spacing, drill and set anchors to torque, plumb the columns, set the carriages and cables, mount the power unit, wire it, bleed the hydraulics, cycle it, and check the safety locks engage in unison. Add time for a taller 15,000 lb unit and for tight bays that require a shuffle.
Electrical is where the surprises live. A power unit needs a dedicated circuit at the correct voltage and phase. Plenty of rural Iowa shops have single-phase 240 available and no three-phase, which affects which power unit you order — get that wrong and the lift sits crated while you wait on a replacement motor. Electrician time is a separate line and it’s not ours; budget for it. Line Five: Accessories You’ll Actually Buy
The quote you get is for a bare lift. Then reality shows up. Truck adapters and stackable pad extenders are near-mandatory for a shop doing brake service on lifted pickups, because frame contact points sit well above a standard pad. Expect a set of adapters to add a few hundred dollars. A drop-in air line kit to the columns is cheap and saves running a hose across the bay a thousand times a year. Column protectors, a jack tray, and arm-mounted rolling jacks each add up.
For rotor work specifically, a wheel dolly or a transmission-style jack matters more than most accessories. A loaded medium-duty rotor and hub assembly is not something you want to muscle off a spindle at shoulder height, and shops that skip that tool eat it in labor time and shoulder injuries. Budget five to ten percent of the equipment number for accessories and you’ll be roughly right. It’s also worth stocking a spare set of equalizer cables and a cylinder seal kit before you need them, because downtime on a single-lift shop is expensive and freight on an emergency part is worse. How Financing Terms Actually Pencil Out
Most shops we work with don’t write a check for the whole project. Equipment financing on automotive two post lifts commonly runs 36 to 60 months, sometimes with a small documentation fee and often with the first payment deferred 30 to 90 days. Rates vary with credit and term. Run the arithmetic on your own labor rate. If a lift lets you turn even two additional brake jobs a week that you were previously declining, the incremental gross profit typically covers a 60-month payment several times over. That’s the honest case for financing rather than saving up: the bay earns while it’s being paid for. What we caution against is financing the cheapest possible equipment to chase a low payment. Stretch the term instead and buy the capacity you need. A deferred first payment also helps if concrete work delays your startup by a few weeks — you’re not paying on a lift that isn’t installed. Whatever route you choose, get a delivered-and-installed total in writing with freight, concrete contingency, install, and accessories itemized.
