A small-fleet operator in Urbandale — fourteen vans and a handful of light trucks doing local delivery — asked us last year to spec automotive two post lifts for a service bay he was building out so he could stop paying retail for oil changes and fluid service. His whole business case rested on cycle count: if he could get a van up, drained, filtered, inspected, and back down in under forty minutes, the bay paid for itself in about a year and a half. That changes how you shop. Fleet fluid service isn’t restoration work or general repair; it’s the same six tasks over and over, and the right lift is the one that shaves minutes off each cycle without becoming a liability.

What ALI Gold certification actually certifies
Almost every lift brochure has a badge on it, so the badge stops meaning anything unless you know what’s behind it. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program where an independent lab tests a specific lift model against ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standards — structural capacity with a safety margin, lowering speed, lock engagement, overload protection, the works — and then audits the factory on an ongoing basis. The gold label on the column means that exact model number, in that exact configuration, passed and stays under audit. It is not a brand-level endorsement, which is the part that trips people up.
That distinction matters when you shop. A manufacturer can have certified models and non-certified models in the same catalog. “Meets ALI standards” or “built to ALI specifications” on a spec sheet is marketing language, not certification — if it were certified, the model would be in ALI’s public directory and would carry the gold label. We tell fleet customers to look up the model number in that directory before signing anything. For a business lifting vehicles that employees work under every day, certification is also an insurance and OSHA conversation. When your carrier or a state inspector asks whether your lifting equipment is third-party certified, having certified automotive two post lifts on the floor ends the discussion in about ten seconds. Uncertified equipment doesn’t automatically mean unsafe, but it does mean you’re the one who has to prove it.
Configuration A: the 12,000 lb asymmetric overhead
For this Urbandale build, the first option we priced was a 12,000 pound asymmetric overhead lift — think Rotary SPOA12 class or a Challenger equivalent. The case for it is speed and floor cleanliness. Nothing crosses the floor between the columns, so a drain pan, a fluid caddy, an oil evacuator, and a creeper all move freely. In a fluid-service bay where a tech is pushing equipment in and out fifteen times a day, that clean floor is worth real minutes per cycle and a lot fewer barked shins.
Asymmetric columns rotate to let vehicle doors clear the posts, which sounds like a passenger-car benefit but matters just as much for cargo vans where the driver’s door is enormous and the tech is constantly getting in to release a hood or check a code. Capacity at 12,000 pounds gives comfortable margin on 3/4-ton vans and light trucks — most of this fleet ran 7,000 to 9,000 pounds loaded, and we like at least a 25 percent cushion because fleet vehicles are rarely empty and the load is rarely balanced. The overhead beam does require about 12 feet of clear height, and it does mean a tall van’s roof needs watching on the way up. His new building had 14 feet, so this was the easy branch. Where overhead automotive two post lifts get eliminated is low ceilings, roof-mounted equipment, or racking above the bay.
Configuration B: the 15,000 lb baseplate for taller box vans
The second configuration we put on the table was a heavier baseplate lift — 15,000 pounds, symmetric, floor-channel plumbing. The reasoning had nothing to do with weight and everything to do with roof clearance. If this operator ever added a cutaway box van or a high-roof Transit, an overhead beam becomes the ceiling. Baseplate designs move the whole crossover down to the floor, so the only limit on vertical travel is the building. For fleets whose vehicle mix is drifting taller, that flexibility is worth the compromise.
The compromise is the channel. It’s roughly two to three inches of raised profile running between the columns, and in a fluid-service bay it’s directly in the path of every drain pan and fluid cart that gets pushed under a vehicle. Some shops build a small ramp over it, some just live with it, and some regret it. Higher capacity also brings a wider column footprint and taller columns, which eats bay width. When we laid both options out for this operator, the honest question was whether the tall-vehicle scenario was real or hypothetical. He decided it was hypothetical for at least five years and went with Configuration A. That’s usually the right call — buy for the fleet you have plus one reasonable step, not for the fleet you might imagine. Both configurations of automotive two post lifts were ALI Gold certified models, which was non-negotiable from our side.
Cycle time is the real spec sheet for fluid service
Nobody publishes a cycle-time spec, so you have to build it yourself out of a few numbers that do get published. Rise time to full height on a commercial two-post typically runs 45 to 60 seconds; lowering is standard-limited and comparable. That’s two minutes a vehicle on travel alone, which sounds trivial until you multiply by 300 oil changes a quarter. Motor horsepower and pump displacement drive that number, and a lift with a slow pump will annoy your techs every single day.
The bigger time sinks aren’t hydraulic, though. Arm positioning is where minutes disappear. If the arms telescope easily and the pads adjust height without a wrench, a tech spots a van in twenty seconds. If the arms bind, or the pucks have to be swapped and stacked for every different lift point, add two minutes and a bad mood. Ask about arm reach at both extremes, and get a set of adapters matched to your specific fleet vehicles so nobody improvises. Lock engagement matters too — an audible, positive lock click means the tech trusts it and stops second-guessing. For fluid work specifically, think about height: most oil and filter work happens at chest level, not full rise, so a lift with well-spaced lock positions in the middle of its travel range gets used more efficiently than one with locks concentrated up high.
Concrete, power, and drainage in a new Urbandale bay
New construction is the best-case scenario for installing automotive two post lifts, and it’s still worth planning carefully. If the slab isn’t poured yet, tell your concrete contractor where the columns land and get a thickened pour there — six inches of 4,000 PSI in the lift footprint costs almost nothing extra during the pour and eliminates any question about anchor holding. Four inches of 3,000 PSI is the common minimum, but minimums are for retrofits. On a heavier 15,000 pound baseplate model, check the manufacturer’s requirement, because it climbs.
Two things new bays get wrong. First, floor drains: in a fluid-service bay you want the drain positioned so it isn’t under a column and isn’t where the tech stands, and you want the slope gentle enough that the lift can be shimmed plumb without heroics. We’ve seen a drain located dead center between two column locations, which forced the whole lift eight inches off design and cost the customer a foot of aisle. Second, electrical rough-in. Run a dedicated 220V circuit to the column location during framing, sized per the motor nameplate, and put the disconnect where a tech can reach it. Retrofitting conduit through a finished wall costs multiples of what it costs during construction. If you’re also planning air drops, a lube reel, or a used-oil tank, sketch all of it on one drawing before the concrete truck shows up.
Ongoing inspection when employees work under the lift
The moment you have employees, lift maintenance stops being optional housekeeping and becomes a documented safety program. ALI’s guidance — and general practice we’d recommend regardless — is an annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector, with daily and monthly operator checks in between. Daily is a thirty-second look: cables not frayed, no fluid on the floor, locks engaging, arm restraints working. Monthly adds cable tension and equalization, hydraulic fluid level, anchor bolt torque, and a lubrication pass on the lock latches and slide blocks.
For a fleet shop running high cycle counts, we usually recommend a semiannual professional look rather than annual, because a bay doing 300-plus fluid services a quarter puts more cycles on the cables and locks than a general repair bay does. Keep a written log — date, who checked it, what was found. If there’s ever an incident, that log is the difference between a manageable conversation and a very bad one. What we told the fleet operator to do, in order
Here’s the sequence we gave him, and it’s the same one we’d give any small-fleet operator in central Iowa. One: list every vehicle, curb weight and loaded weight, plus overall height. Two: pick a capacity with at least 25 percent margin over the heaviest loaded vehicle, and confirm your tallest vehicle clears whatever configuration you’re considering. Three: measure clear ceiling height to the lowest obstruction and let that decide overhead versus baseplate. Four: verify or specify the concrete. Five: only then start comparing model numbers and prices.
Six, and this is the one people skip: look up the exact model in the ALI certified products directory before you buy. Seven: budget for adapters, an annual inspection, and a small parts shelf — a spare set of pads and a lock kit live on that shelf for a reason. He ended up with a single 12,000 pound asymmetric overhead unit, ALI Gold, installed in a bay with a thickened pour and a properly placed drain, and he was doing his own fluid service inside three months. His cycle time settled at about thirty-five minutes a van once the techs got their rhythm.
