A collector outside Waterloo called us in the spring with a problem a lot of car people eventually run into: six vehicles, one two-car garage, and a growing habit of paying a shop to rotate tires on cars he was perfectly capable of working on himself. He had been reading about automotive two post lifts for a year and had gotten stuck on the same questions everybody gets stuck on — arm restraints, safety cams, whether the floor would hold, and whether he would regret not buying a four-post for storage. What follows is how that first year actually went, from the day we set the columns through the first annual service twelve months later. We drove up from Ames for both.

Why He Chose Two-Post Over Four-Post

The first honest conversation was about what the lift was for. He wanted to store cars, but he also wanted to do tire rotations, brake jobs, and suspension work — and a four-post with a rolling jack is a compromise on all three. The runways are always somewhere near where you want to put a jack stand, and getting a wheel off means bridging the vehicle first. For wheel work specifically, nothing beats a two-post: the wheels hang completely free, you have full access to the hub, and you are not working around a deck.

We told him what we tell everybody in that situation. If storage is the primary goal and service is occasional, buy the four-post. If service is the primary goal and storage is a bonus you can get from a separate parking lift later, buy the two-post. He picked service. His fleet topped out around 4,500 pounds — no trucks, no dually, mostly 1960s and 1970s American iron plus a modern daily driver — so a 10,000 lb capacity machine was more than adequate. We steered him to an asymmetric clearfloor unit because his garage ceiling gave us just under twelve feet of clear height and he wanted the floor completely open for a creeper and a transmission jack. Among automotive two post lifts in that capacity range, asymmetric geometry also meant he could open the door on a two-door coupe without hitting a column, which matters when you own cars with doors the length of a park bench.

Install Day in Waterloo

Install day started with a hammer drill and a tape measure, not a forklift. We test-drilled the slab before anything came off the trailer. His garage was poured in the mid-2000s with what turned out to be a solid five and a half inches of concrete, well above the four-inch minimum, and the control joints were far enough from our anchor pattern that we did not have to shift the layout. That is not always how it goes. We have walked away from installs where the slab was three inches over gravel, and we would rather tell somebody that on day one than come back for a warranty claim on a tipped column.

Layout came next. We set the columns to give him roughly twelve feet between the drive-through and the back wall, squared everything with a chalk line and a laser, and shimmed the driver-side column about a quarter inch to account for the floor’s drainage slope toward the door. Shimming matters more than people realize — an out-of-plumb column loads the carriage rollers unevenly and you will hear about it in the form of a squeak within six months. Anchors went in with a rotary hammer, got torqued to spec, and then got re-torqued after the first few lift cycles. We ran the hydraulic line, filled the power unit, bled the cylinders by cycling the carriages several times, and set the equalization cable tension. Total time on site was about five hours. Then came the part that took the longest: teaching him the machine. Anybody buying automotive two post lifts should insist on that walkthrough, and if the seller cannot provide it, that tells you something.

Arm Restraints: What They Do and What They Do Not Do

Arm restraints were the thing he had read the most about and understood the least, which is common. The restraint is a gear-and-pin mechanism at the base of each swing arm. When the carriage lifts off the ground, the pin drops into the gear teeth and locks the arm’s rotation so it cannot swing out from under the vehicle. That is the entire job. It prevents the arm from rotating. It does not prevent the pad from slipping off a pinch weld, it does not compensate for a badly balanced vehicle, and it does not hold the arm in place if the pad was never seated properly in the first place.

We showed him the failure mode. On a lot of used machines we service, the restraint gear teeth are rounded off from people forcing arms while the lift is raised, or the pin spring has gone soft and the pin only partially engages. You test it in about five seconds: raise the lift six inches and try to swing each arm by hand. If it moves at all, the restraint is not doing its job and needs a new gear, pin, or spring before the machine sees another vehicle. He tests his every month now. The other habit we drilled into him is that arms get positioned with the lift fully down, always. Reaching under a raised vehicle to nudge an arm is how people get hurt, and it is also how restraint gears get destroyed. Good arm restraints are one of the reasons we recommend commercial-grade equipment over the cheapest automotive two post lifts on the internet — the mechanism is heavier and the parts are still available in ten years.

Safety Cams and the Sound You Want to Hear

The safety cams — the ratcheting locks inside each column — are the mechanical backstop for everything. Hydraulics raise the vehicle; the locks hold it. Every time the carriage travels up, the pawl clicks over the ladder rack, and the correct habit after reaching working height is to lower the lift onto the locks so the load sits on steel instead of oil pressure. He learned to listen for that. Two columns, two distinct clicks, and they should be close to simultaneous. If one column clicks noticeably before the other, the equalization cables have gone slack and need re-tensioning.

In the first two months he had exactly that happen. New cables stretch — it is normal and it is not a defect — and he called us because the passenger-side lock was catching about half a tooth ahead of the driver’s side. We walked him through the adjustment on the phone: raise the lift, find the adjusting nuts at the top of the cables, take a half turn at a time, cycle the lift, check again. Twenty minutes and it was even. The other thing we told him to watch for is a lock that will not release cleanly. On a lot of the automotive two post lifts we service in eastern Iowa, the release cable stretches or the pivot points dry out, and one lock hangs while the other drops. That puts the whole load on one column momentarily. A shot of light oil on the pivots twice a year prevents it. Never, ever work under a vehicle that has not been set down on the locks — the click is the whole point.

Tire Rotations and Wheel Work: The Payoff

The reason he bought the thing was wheels, and this is where a two-post earns its keep. On the first Saturday he had the lift in service, he rotated tires on three cars in the time it used to take him to do one on jack stands. Vehicle up, all four wheels hanging free at chest height, impact gun, torque wrench, done. No crawling, no repositioning a floor jack four times, no worrying about a stand shifting on a garage floor with a slope in it.

Wheel and brake work also exposed the value of the pad setup. His older cars have frame rails and body mounts in odd places, and the standard rubber pads that ship with most machines are too tall for a lowered car and too short to reach a frame rail on a truck-based vehicle. We sold him a set of screw-up pad extensions in two heights and a pair of low-profile adapters, and that solved essentially every lift point on his fleet. That is the accessory nobody budgets for and everybody eventually buys. He also found the practical limit of the setup: with a car in the air, the bay is unusable for anything else, which is exactly the tradeoff you accept when you choose service capability over storage. For a collector who wants both, the answer is usually a two-post in the working bay and a four-post for parking, not one machine trying to do both jobs. The First Annual Service

Twelve months later we came back for the first real service. It took about ninety minutes and it is the same list we run on every machine. Anchor torque came first — three of the ten anchors had relaxed slightly, which is completely normal as concrete settles around wedge anchors, and we brought them back to spec. Then equalization cables: we ran a rag along the full length of both looking for broken strands, checked the sheaves for grooving, and confirmed tension was even. Both cables were clean. In a low-cycle home shop like his, we expect seven to ten years out of a cable set, but we still look every year.

Next, the safety cams got cleaned and oiled, and we verified each pawl fully seated and released. Arm restraints got the same treatment — pins checked for full engagement, springs checked for tension, gear teeth inspected for rounding. Hydraulic fluid was down a little from initial bleeding, so we topped it off with the specified AW-32. We checked the cylinder rods for scoring and found a light film of seepage on one, which we noted but did not act on; a film that never drips is normal, a drip means a seal kit. Carriage slide blocks got greased, columns got wiped down, and we cycled the machine a dozen times to confirm even travel. That is the whole maintenance story for the first year. People assume automotive two post lifts are high-maintenance equipment and they are not — they just need someone to actually look at them once a year. What He Would Do Differently

We asked him at the annual service what he would change. Three things. First, he would have run a dedicated 220V circuit during the install instead of after — he started on a shared 110V power unit, which works but raises slower and lugs under load, and the electrician trip cost him more as a separate job than it would have as part of the original project. Plan the electrical before the lift shows up, not after.

Second, he would have bought the pad adapters up front instead of ordering them a month later after fighting with a lowered car. And third, he would have paid closer attention to drive-through width. He got the columns set at a reasonable spacing, but he owns one wide-body car that requires a careful approach and a spotter. An extra six inches of column spacing would have cost nothing at layout time and eliminated the annoyance forever. None of these are deal-breakers, and a year in he says buying the lift was the single best thing he has done to that garage. That tracks with what we hear from most people who make the jump. The equipment is not exotic, the maintenance is manageable, and the difference in what you can accomplish on a Saturday is enormous.
