When a heavy-duty truck shop owner up in northeast Iowa called us about automotive two post lifts, his question wasn’t about which brand — it was about what the whole project would actually cost by the time a technician could stand under a three-quarter-ton pickup and pull an exhaust. That’s the right question. The sticker on a lift is maybe sixty percent of what you’ll spend before you turn a wrench under it. The Site Survey Comes First, Not the Purchase Order

The shop in question was a converted implement building — forty by sixty, twelve-foot sidewalls at the eave, a mix of original slab and a newer pour where a lean-to had been closed in. That mix is the single most common thing we find in northeast Iowa buildings, and it’s exactly why we survey before anyone signs anything. We measure ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not the peak. We locate the seams and control joints in the slab. We core or at least hammer-test the concrete to confirm thickness. And we ask what the heaviest vehicle in the door is going to be, because a shop that says “mostly pickups” often means “pickups and the occasional dually with a service body.”

A survey costs us a half day and saves you thousands. On this job it turned up two things that would have wrecked a blind installation: the newer pour was only about four inches thick with no visible reinforcement, and a floor drain ran diagonally across the exact spot the owner had chalked out for a column. We shifted the bay eighteen inches, planned a pair of concrete cut-and-pour pads, and kept the drain intact. If you’re comparing automotive two post lifts on price alone and skipping this step, you’re gambling with the most expensive variable in the whole project.

Capacity and Configuration for Exhaust and Driveline Work

Exhaust and driveline access is a different job than brakes and tires. You need the vehicle high enough that a tech can stand upright under the transmission tunnel with a torch or a sawzall, and you need the arms out of the way of a driveshaft drop. For a shop running three-quarter and one-ton trucks, we generally point people toward 12,000 to 15,000 lb capacity rather than the standard 10,000. The extra capacity isn’t just about weight — taller columns, longer arms, and higher lifting carriages come with it, and that’s what buys you working room under a crew cab long bed.

Overhead versus floorplate matters here too. Overhead models keep the floor completely clear, which is a gift when you’re rolling a transmission jack under a dually. But they eat ceiling height, and with twelve-foot sidewalls we had to confirm the crossbar cleared both the trusses and the shop’s existing lighting run. Floorplate designs solve the height problem and are the right answer in a lot of older Iowa buildings, but that base channel is a trip hazard and a nuisance when you’re sliding a driveshaft out. We walked the owner through both, and he chose overhead after we confirmed nine inches of clearance to spare. That kind of decision is why automotive two post lifts should be spec’d in the building, not from a website.

Concrete: The Line Item Nobody Budgets For

Manufacturers publish minimum concrete requirements, and they’re not suggestions. Most two-post models want at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and higher-capacity units want more — often six inches, sometimes with specific cure time and reinforcement requirements. We routinely find Iowa shop floors at three and a half inches, or four inches of good concrete sitting on soft fill that was never compacted. Neither one holds an anchor under load the way it needs to.

The fix is straightforward but it costs money. We saw out a pad under each column — typically four by four feet or larger depending on the manufacturer’s spec — dig down, compact the base, tie in rebar, and pour. Then it cures. Full cure before anchoring is not negotiable; we’ve been called out to shops where somebody anchored at three days because the boss wanted the bay running, and the anchors pulled. Budget in the low four figures for a two-column cut-and-pour in most of the state, more if access is bad or the existing slab is thick and heavily reinforced. Add a week of calendar time for cure. When people tell us automotive two post lifts came in over budget, this is almost always the line item that did it.

What the Freight and Rigging Actually Involve

A 15,000 lb two-post ships as two columns, a carriage assembly, arms, a power unit, and a hardware crate — call it two thousand pounds of freight on a pallet and a half. It arrives on a semi, usually with a liftgate if you request one, and if you don’t have a forklift or a loading dock you are going to have a bad afternoon. The truck shop we worked with had a skid loader with forks, which made unload a twenty-minute job. Plenty of shops don’t, and we bring rigging when that’s the case.

Freight to northeast Iowa generally runs a few hundred dollars, more if you’re rural enough that the carrier calls it a limited-access delivery. Residential and farm addresses get surcharged. We tell customers to plan for freight, liftgate, and possible re-delivery fees as one combined line rather than treating shipping as an afterthought. We also inspect at delivery and note damage on the bill of lading before the driver leaves, because a bent column discovered three days later becomes your problem, not the carrier’s. Electrical, Air, and the Utilities Line Item

The power unit on most two-post lifts is a 220V single-phase motor drawing around 20 to 25 amps, though three-phase options exist and are often the better choice in a commercial building that already has three-phase service. Either way, you need a dedicated circuit with a disconnect within sight of the lift. Running that circuit is an electrician’s job and it’s a real cost — figure several hundred dollars for a short run from a nearby panel, well over a thousand if the panel is on the other side of the building or needs a subpanel added.

Air is the other utility people forget. Most automotive two post lifts use a pneumatic lock release, which means a shop air line has to reach the columns. If you’re plumbing air anyway during a shop build, run it while the walls are open. In the northeast Iowa job, the owner’s compressor was at the far end of the building and we added about sixty feet of hard line during the same week the electrician was on site — cheaper and faster than making two separate trips. Coordinating trades is a genuine savings lever on these projects, and it’s one of the things we push customers on when they ask how to keep the number down.

Install Labor and the First Day of Operation

A clean two-post installation on good concrete with utilities already in place is roughly a one-day job for a two-person crew. Set and plumb the columns, anchor with the manufacturer’s specified anchors torqued to spec, hang the carriages and arms, mount and wire the power unit, fill and bleed hydraulics, sync the equalization cables, cycle the locks, and run a load test. Add a half day if we’re chasing an out-of-level floor, which in older Iowa buildings is more often than not.

Installation labor for a standard two-post generally lands in the four-figure range in Iowa, with travel factored for shops more than a couple hours from Ames. That’s inclusive of the load test and the walkthrough with your techs. We don’t leave until somebody on your staff can raise, lock, lower, and emergency-release the unit without looking at the manual. The final piece is the ALI inspection — annual third-party inspection is the standard of care and increasingly what insurers ask about. We schedule the first one at install and put customers on a recurring cadence. Add all of it up and a mid-capacity two-post project in northeast Iowa, done right, lands in the mid five figures territory once concrete and utilities are counted. Where Shops Save Money Without Cutting Corners

There are legitimate ways to bring a two-post project in cheaper, and there are ways that will cost you more later. The legitimate ones: buy a mainstream brand with real parts support so a cable or cylinder in year seven is a phone call instead of a scrap decision; combine trades into a single week; take delivery when you actually have the concrete ready rather than paying to store a lift; and be honest about capacity instead of buying a 10,000 lb unit and hoping. We’ve seen shops upgrade twice in five years because they under-bought the first time, which is the most expensive path available.

The bad savings are equally predictable. Skipping the concrete pad. Using hardware-store anchors instead of the specified ones. Buying an off-brand unit with no parts pipeline.
