A first-time buyer outside Dubuque called us last spring with a pole building, a 12-foot sidewall, and a very reasonable question: which of the dozens of automotive two post lifts on the market actually fits what he’s doing? He wanted exhaust work, driveline access, and the ability to get a wrench on a rusty flange bolt without laying on cold concrete. He was not running a shop. He wasn’t lifting a dually. He just wanted a machine that would hold a 5,000 lb sedan in the air safely for years. We walked him through the model numbers, the ceiling math, and the concrete question, and he ended up with the right unit the first time. Start With the Vehicle, Not the Brochure

Every good spec comparison starts with the heaviest thing you plan to put in the air, plus a margin. The Dubuque buyer’s daily driver was a mid-size crossover around 4,400 lbs, and his project car was lighter. A 10,000 lb capacity unit gives him more than double the headroom he needs, and that’s not overkill — it’s the sweet spot where parts availability, arm design, and resale value all line up. We see people talk themselves into 9,000 lb units to save a few hundred dollars, then buy a three-quarter-ton pickup two years later and regret it.

Capacity is also about distribution, not just the total number. A lift rated 10,000 lbs assumes roughly 2,500 lbs per arm. Put a long-wheelbase truck on a symmetric lift with the engine hanging out past the front arms and you can overload one corner while the total weight is well under the plate rating. This is why we ask what you drive, what your neighbor drives, and what you might buy. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric vs. Versymmetric

The three configurations sound like marketing words but they change how you work. A symmetric lift puts the columns straight across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between the posts. It’s excellent for trucks and vans because the load sits evenly, but the doors open right into the columns on a passenger car. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and uses short front arms and long rear arms, moving the car back so you can open the driver’s door. That’s the layout most home users want.

Rotary’s versymmetric design splits the difference — the arms and column rotation let you run either mode depending on the vehicle, which is why the SPO12 and SPOA10 families stay so popular in Iowa shops and garages. For the Dubuque exhaust-and-driveline job, we pointed at an asymmetric or versymmetric unit specifically because he’d be walking in and out of the cabin to check shifter linkage and reconnect sensors. When comparing automotive two post lifts on paper, look past the capacity number to the arm lengths: a short front arm in the 22–35 inch range and a rear arm reaching 50 inches or more tells you it’s built for cars, not just pickups.

Ceiling Height and the Overhead vs. Baseplate Call

This is where most home builds get decided. A clearfloor (overhead) lift routes the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a beam across the top, which keeps the floor completely open — no bar to trip over, no hose to run over with a floor jack. But it needs real height. Most overhead 10,000 lb units want 12 feet minimum, and 12 feet 6 inches is more comfortable. A 12-foot sidewall in a pole building often works if the trusses allow it, but you have to measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak.

Baseplate models run the cables and hose through a low channel at floor level, dropping the required ceiling height down into the 11-foot range and sometimes lower on shorter-column versions. We had a customer in North Dakota with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit and a 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle — baseplate was the only honest answer. The trade-off is that flat plate on your floor, which is a minor annoyance you’ll notice every time you roll a transmission jack across it. Between the two families of automotive two post lifts, we tell people: if you have the height, go overhead. If you don’t, baseplate is not a compromise on safety, just on convenience.

Concrete: The Spec Nobody Reads

Anchors don’t hold a lift up — concrete does. Almost every 10,000 lb two post lift calls for a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many manufacturers specify 4.25 inches at 3,000 PSI or better, cured at least 28 days, with no reinforcing mesh right where the anchors land. Thicker is better. We’ve walked into garages where a slab was poured over a gravel base with no compaction and the concrete crumbled at the anchor hole.

If you don’t know your slab thickness, find out before you order. A rotary hammer and a small test hole in an inconspicuous corner takes ten minutes and tells you everything. A gentleman in northern Missouri told us his pad was “about 5 inches, maybe less” — and “maybe less” is exactly the phrase that leads to a cut-and-pour footing pad. That’s usually a 4-foot by 4-foot by 12-inch pad under each column, which is a weekend of work and a couple hundred dollars of concrete, far cheaper than a failure. We’d rather tell you no on the phone than watch a car come down. Before we quote automotive two post lifts for anybody’s shop or garage, the slab conversation happens first.

Reading Model Numbers Without Getting Lost

Manufacturer part numbers look like alphabet soup until you know the pattern. On Rotary equipment, SPO generally means symmetric or versymmetric overhead, SPOA points at the asymmetric family, and the trailing digits give you capacity in thousands of pounds — an SPO10 is a 10,000 lb overhead unit, an SPO12 is 12,000. Challenger uses CL and E prefixes with a similar capacity convention, so a CL10 reads as a 10,000 lb clearfloor. BendPak’s XPR and Atlas’s numbered series follow the same logic once you spot it.

Where people get burned is cross-shopping a model number they saw on a forum against a lift that shares the digits but not the design. “9LC” on one brand’s price list is a different animal than another’s. Column height, arm reach, lifting height, and drive-through clearance can all differ by a foot between units with nearly identical names. We keep a spec binder and a parts database for this exact reason, and we’ll pull the real numbers for you rather than guessing. Exhaust and Driveline Work: What Actually Helps

The Dubuque buyer’s whole reason for buying was exhaust and driveline access, and that shapes a few options. First, lifting height: a unit that gets you to 72 inches or better under the arms means you stand upright under a car instead of crouching. Cheap short-column units that top out around 66 inches will make you hate the job. Second, drive-through clearance between the columns — if you’re sliding a full cat-back system in from the front, that matters more than you’d think.

Third, get the truck adapters and low-profile pad kits up front. Frame contact points on a modern unibody car are shallow, and stacking blocks on a standard pad is how vehicles slip. Low-profile arm pads with a proper pinch-weld or puck adapter set solve it correctly. Fourth, plan your lighting before install, not after — a couple of shop lights on the ceiling behind the lift beat a drop light every time. What We’d Tell a First-Time Buyer in Eastern Iowa

Buy once. The difference between a bargain-bin import and a well-supported unit from a brand with a real parts pipeline is not the day you install it — it’s year six, when a cable frays or a lock pawl sticks and you need a part that ships this week. Second, get the install done right or get coached through it. Plenty of home users do their own install and do it well; the ones who struggle are the ones who skip the plumb-and-shim step and then chase cable tension forever. Torque your anchors to spec, shim the columns plumb, cycle the lift empty, and verify both locks engage together. Third, don’t over-buy.
