A mobile mechanic working out of a shop building in northern Missouri called us with exactly that problem. He runs a lot of miles, does driveline and exhaust work for farmers and small fleets, and wanted something that would get a vehicle high enough to stand under without hunching. He also had a loft on one side of the building, a wall on the other, and concrete he was not sure about. Why Exhaust and Driveline Work Drives the Spec
Exhaust and driveline jobs are different from brake jobs, and that difference shows up in the spec sheet. When you are cutting and welding pipe, or pulling a two-piece driveshaft with a center support bearing, you need the whole underside of the vehicle open from bumper to bumper and you need to be standing upright with both hands free. That rules out mid-rise scissors and it puts real pressure on rise height. A lift that tops out at 69 inches of pad height is fine for a tire rotation, but if you are six foot two and running a chop saw under a Silverado, you want the full 72 to 74 inches that a proper column gives you.
It also changes how we think about arm configuration. Driveline work means you are constantly walking front to back, so asymmetric arms that swing the vehicle rearward can help you get around the front of the truck without turning sideways. But symmetric arms give you a more balanced load when you are yanking on a stuck yoke with a pry bar. For this northern Missouri shop, we landed on a versymmetric arrangement — the arms can be set either way depending on what rolled in that morning. That flexibility is one of the quiet reasons automotive two post lifts have outlasted every other design in general repair bays.
Reading the Model Numbers Instead of the Marketing
The model number on most lifts tells you more than the brochure does, and once you know how to read it the shopping gets a lot faster. A Rotary SPO12 is a 12,000 lb symmetric overhead. A Rotary SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric overhead. A Challenger CL10V3 is a 10,000 lb versymmetric. When a customer sends us a model like “9LC” we know immediately it is a 9,000 lb clearfloor unit and we can start asking the right follow-up questions about bay width and ceiling height instead of guessing.
Capacity numbers are where people get tripped up. Our northern Missouri caller said his heaviest vehicle was around 7,000 lb — a three-quarter-ton pickup with a full toolbox. A 9,000 lb unit would technically handle it. We still pushed him to 10,000 lb, and here is why: capacity ratings assume balanced loading across four arms, and the day you put a dually on there with a bed full of scrap, that margin disappears fast. The price gap between a 9,000 and a 10,000 lb column is smaller than most people expect, and the resale gap is bigger. Among automotive two post lifts, the 10,000 lb class is the volume seller for exactly this reason — it covers 95 percent of what a general repair shop sees without pushing you into heavy-duty pricing.
Overhead Versus Baseplate: The Loft Problem
This shop had a loft above the left side of the bay and a finished wall on the right. That is a common layout in pole buildings across northern Missouri and southern Iowa, and it forces a real decision. An overhead lift needs unobstructed ceiling clearance across the full width of the bay for the crossbeam and the equalization cables. If your usable ceiling is only clear on one side, an overhead is either impossible or it means cutting into the loft framing.
Baseplate models move all of that hardware into a low channel that runs across the floor between the columns. You lose nothing in capacity and you gain the ability to lift a van or a box truck without worrying about the roof hitting a crossbar. What you give up is a clean floor — you are stepping over a two-inch ramp every time you walk through the bay, and if you roll a floor jack or a transmission jack across it constantly, that gets old. We had another customer in Grand Forks with the same constraint who went baseplate for a 9,000 lb unit and never regretted it. For automotive two post lifts in buildings with lofts, low trusses, or radiant heat runs in the ceiling, baseplate is usually the honest answer rather than the compromise.
Concrete: The Spec Nobody Wants to Talk About
Our Missouri caller said his slab was “about five inches, but may be less.” That phrase shows up in maybe a third of the conversations we have. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and some 12,000 lb and up units want more. Four inches is a floor, not a target. If the pour is old, if it was done in cold weather, or if there is a control joint running right where an anchor needs to land, you have a problem that no amount of lift quality fixes.
The fix is not complicated but it does need to happen before delivery. We recommend coring a test plug at each proposed column location so you know the actual thickness and can see the aggregate. If it comes back thin, the answer is a pair of poured footing pads — typically four feet square and a foot deep, tied into the existing slab with rebar dowels. A lift is only as good as what it is bolted to, and we would rather delay an install three weeks than anchor into questionable concrete.
Budget Reality Versus What the Job Actually Needs
He told us he did not feel the need to spend five figures on a lift. That is a completely reasonable position and we do not argue with it. What we do is lay out the tiers honestly. Entry-level imported columns in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range land in the low-to-mid four figures. Mid-tier units with better carriage bearings, thicker column steel, and a real parts pipeline run somewhat higher. Premium American-built equipment from Rotary or Challenger sits above that, and the gap buys you a lift you will still be getting arms and cables for in twenty years.
For a mobile mechanic who bills by the job, the math usually favors the middle tier. The real cost of a cheap lift is not the purchase price — it is the week you lose when a cylinder seal fails and nobody stocks the part. We keep cables, cylinders, arm assemblies, and lock ladders on the shelf for the brands we sell, which means a downed bay is a two-day problem instead of a two-month one. When customers ask us to compare automotive two post lifts strictly on sticker price, we push them to compare on parts availability instead. That is the number that actually shows up on your P&L three years from now.
What the Northern Missouri Install Actually Looked Like
We ended up specifying a 10,000 lb baseplate unit with versymmetric arms, three-stage front arms for low-profile cars, and a 74-inch maximum pad height. The loft stayed intact. The install crew ran out of Ames on a Tuesday, cored the slab first thing, found four and a quarter inches of decent concrete with good aggregate, and anchored without needing footing pads. Total time on site was under five hours including the shakedown cycle and a walkthrough on the lock system.
The part he was most surprised by was the arm restraints. He had used older equipment where the restraints were a courtesy at best, and the gear-driven restraints on the new columns actually held. Two months later he called back to order a set of truck adapters for a lifted three-quarter-ton with a body lift on it, which is exactly the kind of follow-up call we like to get. That is the pattern we see with well-specced automotive two post lifts — the first six months are about learning the machine, and after that it just becomes part of the building. Getting Your Own Spec Right the First Time

Measure your ceiling from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest thing in the way, whether that is a truss, a light fixture, a garage door track, or a heater. Measure the clear width between whatever is on either side of the bay. Find out what your slab actually is, and if you do not know, plan to core it. Then tell us the heaviest and the lowest vehicle you expect to put on it, because those two numbers set capacity and arm style respectively.
