Most of the questions we field about automotive two post lifts come down to one deceptively simple fork in the road: symmetric or asymmetric. A collector outside Waterloo called us in early spring with a pole building, six vehicles he rotates through the seasons, and a growing frustration with doing alignment checks on jack stands. He wanted to lift a ’68 muscle car one weekend and a modern crossover the next, and he had no idea which column configuration would let him open a door once the vehicle was in the air. We walked him through it, installed the lift in April, and came back that fall for his first service. This is what that first year actually looked like — the decisions, the mistakes, and what we’d tell the next guy.

Why the Symmetric Question Came Up First

The collector’s original plan was to buy whatever was cheapest and figure out the rest later. That’s how most people start, and it’s how most people end up with a lift that fights them every weekend. On a true symmetric setup, the columns face each other directly and the four arms are roughly equal length. The vehicle sits centered between the posts, which means the doors line up with the columns. On a heavy sedan with long doors, you’re squeezing sideways to get in and out. For a shop doing brake jobs where nobody needs the cabin, that’s fine. For a collector who is constantly reaching in to release a hood, check a steering wheel position during an alignment, or move a car in and out of the bay a dozen times a season, it becomes a daily annoyance.

An asymmetric configuration rotates the columns about thirty degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms. The vehicle sits back roughly a third, so the doors open ahead of the posts. That single geometry change is why asymmetric dominates the light-duty market. But it isn’t universally better. Asymmetric loads the rear of the vehicle differently, and on trucks or vans with a long wheelbase and rearward center of gravity, symmetric often gives a more balanced, confident pickup. We told him what we tell everybody: pick based on what you actually drive, not what the catalog photo shows.

What He Actually Drives — and Why That Settled It

His rotation was four cars and two light trucks. The cars were the ones getting worked on; the trucks mostly just got stored and driven. That mix pushed us toward a versatile-symmetric model, which is the compromise most manufacturers now build by default. The columns are set for asymmetric use, but the arms are configured so you can run them symmetrically when a truck comes in. You give up a little door clearance compared to a dedicated asymmetric unit, and you give up a little balance compared to a dedicated symmetric one, but you cover both ends of the range.

This is the part people miss when they shop automotive two post lifts online. The listing says “10,000 lb capacity” and everyone stops reading. Capacity is rarely the constraint for a home collector — a loaded three-quarter-ton pickup is under 8,000 pounds. The real constraints are arm reach, minimum pad height, and column spacing. His lowest car sat under four inches at the pinch weld. A standard round pad stack would not have slid under it without ramps. We specced low-profile arms with a screw-up adjuster and telescoping three-stage fronts, which gave him the reach for a long-wheelbase truck and the drop-down clearance for the sports car. That single arm decision mattered more to his year than symmetric versus asymmetric ever did.

Install Day in the Pole Building

His slab was the wild card. The building went up in 2016 with a nominal five-inch pour, but nobody had a pour log and the contractor was long gone. We cored two test spots before anything got anchored. We found just over four and a half inches of decent concrete over compacted fill in one location and slightly less at the other. That’s borderline. Manufacturer specs for most 10,000 lb units call for four inches minimum at 3,000 PSI, and “minimum” is not where you want to live with two tons of steel and a car overhead.

We cut and repoured two footing pads, roughly four feet square and twelve inches deep, tied into the existing slab with rebar dowels. It added a week to the timeline and a modest chunk to the budget, and it’s the single best money he spent. We’ve been called out to enough leaning columns across northern Iowa to know how that story ends otherwise. Once the pads cured, the actual install took most of a day: set the columns, plumb them, anchor with the specified wedge anchors torqued to spec, route the equalization cable and hydraulic line through the overhead bar, bleed the system, and cycle the lift empty a dozen times. We set the overhead shutoff bar, verified the lock engagement on both columns, and loaded a test vehicle before we left. Anchors got re-torqued after the first few cycles, which is standard and which a lot of DIY installs skip.

Doing Alignment Work on Automotive Two Post Lifts

Here’s where we had to manage expectations. He wanted to do alignment work, and automotive two post lifts are not alignment racks. A proper alignment needs the suspension loaded at ride height with the wheels free to be turned and the platform dead level and repeatable. A two-post holds the vehicle by the frame with the suspension hanging. You cannot set toe and camber to spec that way and expect it to hold when the car comes down.

What you can do on a two-post is everything around the alignment. Inspect and replace tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, and strut mounts. Measure ride height, check for bent components, verify the subframe isn’t shifted. Do a string-and-turnplate check for gross toe issues on a classic where nobody’s making a factory spec sheet anyway. For his collection, that covered ninety percent of what he needed, and he takes the two modern vehicles to a shop with a rack once a year. We’ve had customers add drive-on ramp adapters or a set of slip plates to get closer, and there are alignment-capable four-post setups if that’s genuinely the priority. But we’d rather tell somebody up front that a two-post won’t do it than sell them a lift and let them discover it in month three. He appreciated the honesty, and he bought the lift anyway.

The First Six Months: What Went Right and What Annoyed Him

The good news first. He put the lift up and down probably two hundred times in six months and had zero issues with the hydraulics or locks. He got comfortable fast with spotting the pickup points on each car — which is the real skill with any two-post, and one that takes a few dozen reps before it stops being nerve-wracking. He built a laminated card for each vehicle in his collection with the four pad locations marked, which we’ve since recommended to other customers because it’s a genuinely good idea.

The annoyances were small and predictable. The arm restraint gears clicked more than he expected, which is normal and is the sound of the mechanism doing its job. He wished he’d bought a taller column — he went with a standard clearfloor unit and his tallest vehicle plus the overhead bar left less headroom than he’d pictured, especially with a hood up. That’s a measurement people get wrong constantly. You need the ceiling height, minus the overhead assembly, minus the vehicle height, minus the lift travel, and you need it to still leave you room to stand and work. His twelve-foot sidewalls were fine; his ten-foot section near the door was not, so the lift placement got shifted six feet from the original plan. We caught that in the site visit. If he’d ordered online and installed it himself, he’d have found out with a column already anchored.

First Annual Service and What We Found

We came back in October. Annual service on a two-post is not complicated but it is not optional, and the insurance and liability side of it matters even for a home shop. We checked hydraulic fluid level and condition, inspected the cylinder rod and seals for weeping, ran the equalization cables through our hands looking for broken strands or corrosion, checked cable tension and adjusted it, inspected every anchor bolt for torque, tested both lock mechanisms under load, and inspected the arm restraints and pin engagement.

What we found was mostly good. Cable tension had relaxed slightly, which is completely normal in the first year as the system settles — that’s exactly why the first service matters more than the fifth. Two anchors had backed off a few foot-pounds. One arm restraint pin was gummed with the kind of grime you get in a building that also stores a lawn mower and a snowblower; it got cleaned and lubed. Hydraulic fluid was clean. Total service took about ninety minutes. He now has us on an annual cycle and we hit him at the same time each fall. It’s a small recurring cost against a piece of equipment that holds a car over your head, and the failures we get called out for are almost always on lifts that went five or eight years without anybody looking at a cable. What We’d Tell the Next Waterloo Buyer

If you’re within driving distance of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, or anywhere in northeast Iowa and you’re weighing automotive two post lifts for a home collection, start with three measurements before you look at a single product page. Ceiling height at the exact spot the lift will sit. Slab thickness, verified by a core sample and not by what the builder told you. And the lowest pinch-weld height across every vehicle you own. Those three numbers eliminate most of the catalog and turn a confusing decision into a short list.

On symmetric versus asymmetric specifically: if you’re working on cars and need cabin access, go asymmetric or versatile-symmetric. If you’re primarily lifting trucks, vans, or anything with a rearward weight bias, symmetric earns its keep. If you’re mixed, versatile-symmetric is the honest answer and it’s what we spec most often for collectors. Don’t let a forum argument make the decision — look at your own driveway.
