Automotive two post lifts are the workhorse of any dealership suspension bay, and when a service manager near Marion asked us to spec four of them, the conversation started with numbers rather than brands. He was replacing aging equipment in a shop doing steady strut, shock, control arm, and bushing work on everything from compact sedans to three-quarter-ton pickups. He wanted to know exactly what dimensions he was committing to, what his slab could handle, and whether buying reconditioned units instead of new would save enough to justify it. This article is that conversation written down — actual measurements, actual clearances, and an honest framework for the used-versus-new decision that we use with every commercial customer.

Start With the Bay, Not the Brochure

Before capacity, before brand, we measure the bay. A standard two post installation wants roughly 12 to 13 feet of width per bay for comfortable door swing and tech movement, though a 10-foot bay can work if you accept that techs will be turning sideways. Depth needs to accommodate the longest vehicle you service plus about four feet of walk-around. For this Marion shop, the bays were 13 feet wide by 26 feet deep — generous, which made the layout easy.

Ceiling height is where projects die. A clearfloor overhead unit with a 10,000 lb capacity typically stands 12 to 12 feet 6 inches to the top of the overhead beam. Add the height of the tallest vehicle you’ll raise fully and you need real headroom. His building had 14 feet clear to the bottom of the joists, but a run of conduit and two sprinkler heads dropped effective clearance to about 13 feet 2 inches over one bay. We moved that column pair 18 inches and got it. If you’re under 12 feet, you’re looking at baseplate models, where the hydraulic and equalizer lines run through a floor plate you drive over instead of an overhead crossbeam. Baseplate units on automotive two post lifts work fine — the trade-off is a low bump in the floor and slightly more exposed hose routing.

The Concrete Spec Nobody Wants to Verify

Most 10,000 lb two post installations call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, fully cured, with anchors set no closer than about six inches from any edge, joint, or crack. Twelve to fifteen thousand pound units generally want six inches or more. That number is not a suggestion. Every anchor pulling out that we’ve been called to inspect traced back to thin slab, low-strength mix, or an anchor drilled too close to a control joint.

The Marion shop had original plans showing a six-inch slab, but plans and reality diverge in buildings older than twenty years. We cored a test hole in each bay and found five and a half inches in three bays and just over four in the fourth — right at the edge for the capacity he wanted there. Options in that situation are straightforward: reduce capacity in that bay, cut and pour a reinforced footing pad under the column locations, or relocate. He chose to pour two 4×4-foot pads at 8 inches with rebar, cure for the full 28 days, and install after. That added a few weeks to the timeline and a modest cost, and it’s the reason those columns will still be plumb in fifteen years. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric for Suspension Work

Suspension and shock work has specific ergonomic demands, and arm configuration matters more here than in general repair. Symmetric units place the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between the posts. That gives excellent stability for heavy trucks and puts weight distribution right down the middle. The downside is that the vehicle sits centered, so front doors open into the columns — a real annoyance when a tech needs to get in and out repeatedly to check ride height or cycle the steering.

Asymmetric units rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms with longer rear arms, shifting the vehicle back so the door opening clears the post. For a car-heavy dealership doing struts all day, that’s the better tool. Versymmetric designs from Rotary and comparable Challenger configurations split the difference, letting a tech load a car asymmetrically or a truck symmetrically on the same machine. For four bays running mixed passenger and light truck work, we specced versymmetric-style 10,000 lb units in three bays and a 12,000 lb symmetric in the fourth for the heavier trucks and the occasional dually. Arm spec matters too: three-stage front arms with low-profile pads handle lowered cars and sports models that a two-stage arm can’t reach, and adjustable pad height in the two-to-six-inch range covers most of what rolls through a dealership door.

Real Numbers on Used Automotive Two Post Lifts

Used equipment is a legitimate path, and we sell reconditioned units. But the math only works when you know what you’re buying. A used commercial two post in genuinely good shape typically prices at 40 to 60 percent of new. That sounds like an easy win until you add the parts you’ll replace. Cables are the first item — a set for a 10,000 lb unit lands in the mid hundreds and any lift with unknown cable history should get new ones on principle. Then hydraulic cylinder seals or a cylinder if the rod is scored, arm restraint gears if the teeth are worn, lock ladder components if the columns show wear, and a full hose set if the rubber is over a decade old.

Add those up and a bargain-priced used lift can land within 20 percent of new. What tips the decision is provenance. If we know the machine, know the shop it came out of, and know the service history, a reconditioned unit is a strong buy. If it’s an auction find with no serial-plate documentation, no manual, and a manufacturer that no longer supports the model, walk away — because the parts problem never gets easier. We’ve had customers bring us orphaned lifts where the cylinder had a proprietary rod diameter and no available seal kit, and the only fix was a custom cylinder that cost more than a new lift’s worth of parts. Availability of components is the single best predictor of whether used automotive two post lifts will save you money.

When New Is Clearly the Right Call

Three situations push us to recommend new every time. First, when the lift is a revenue center. A dealership bay generating billable hours all day cannot afford unplanned downtime, and a new unit with a full manufacturer warranty and same-day parts availability protects that revenue. Second, when the capacity requirement is at the top of the range. Fifteen thousand pound and heavier units see loads that punish worn components, and buying used at that capacity means inheriting fatigue you cannot inspect.

Third, when the shop needs ALI certification for insurance or manufacturer program compliance. Many dealership programs and a lot of commercial insurers now want ALI/ETL-certified equipment, and a used unit of unknown certification status can create a paperwork problem that costs more than the savings. The Marion shop fell into all three categories, so he bought new in three bays. In the fourth — a bay used mostly for tire rotations, quick inspections, and overflow — we set a reconditioned 10,000 lb unit with new cables, new seals, and fresh anchors, at meaningful savings. That’s the realistic answer for most shops: new where the money is made, reconditioned where the work is light. The store carries both, and the two-post collection lists capacities and configurations side by side.

Installation Details That Affect Suspension Throughput

A well-specced lift can still create a slow bay if the install ignores workflow. We set air drops and 120V outlets on the column side where techs actually reach for tools, not on the far wall. For suspension work specifically, we made sure each bay had enough clear floor for a spring compressor and a parts cart between the columns and the wall, because a tech walking around a strut assembly twenty times a day loses real minutes to a cramped layout.

Column placement relative to the bay’s centerline also matters. Setting columns dead center in a 13-foot bay leaves 6.5 feet on each side, which sounds fine until you realize the tech works almost exclusively on one side at a time. We biased the columns about eight inches toward the wall on the non-working side, buying working clearance where it counted. Lastly, we set the lock engagement heights the shop actually uses. Most automotive two post lifts have lock positions every three to four inches through the travel, and techs default to whatever is closest to comfortable. Knowing the shop’s average working height let us confirm a solid lock position right there rather than a couple inches off, which reduces the temptation to hold a car on hydraulics alone. Small details, but they compound across four bays and eight techs.

What We’d Hand a Service Manager Before He Buys

Here’s the checklist we left with him, and it applies to any commercial shop in Marion, Cedar Rapids, or anywhere in eastern Iowa evaluating automotive two post lifts. Core the slab and document actual thickness and strength — do not trust the drawings. Measure clear ceiling height at the tightest point over each proposed column location, including conduit, sprinklers, and light fixtures. Identify the heaviest vehicle you’ll actually service and add 25 percent for capacity headroom. Confirm 220V single-phase or three-phase availability at each bay and know your amp draw. Decide symmetric, asymmetric, or versymmetric based on your vehicle mix, not on price.

On the used question, insist on the serial plate, the manufacturer, and the model number before you talk price, then verify that cables, cylinders, seals, and arm restraint parts are still available for that model. If any one of those is unavailable, the price doesn’t matter. Budget for new cables and fresh anchors on any used purchase regardless of how it looks. And build a service schedule from day one — cable tension and lock checks quarterly, hydraulic fluid on an annual cycle in a busy bay, and a documented annual inspection for insurance purposes.
