We spend a lot of our week talking people through used versus new automotive two post lifts, and the conversation almost never starts where the customer thinks it will. Why Restoration Work Changes the Math Entirely
A general repair shop uses a lift in bursts. Car goes up, brakes get done, car comes down, next one rolls in. A restoration shop parks a project overhead for six weeks. That single difference reshapes every specification we recommend. Duty cycle drops but static load time skyrockets, which means the lock ladder, the safety latch mechanism, and the cylinder seals matter more than raw cycle count. A cylinder that leaks down a half inch overnight is a nuisance in a brake shop and a genuine hazard in a shop where somebody is going to be lying under that car with a cutoff wheel next Tuesday.
The metal work adds a second wrinkle. Welding under a vehicle means slag, sparks, and heat near hydraulic hoses and electrical conduit. On the shop near the border we specified hose routing up the column with steel guard channel rather than the factory plastic loom, and we moved the power unit to the off-side column so the operator’s welding side stayed clear. We also talked them out of a used unit whose hoses had already been scorched — you could see the hardened, glossy patches on the outer jacket. Hose is cheap to replace. Hose that has been cooked and then re-cooked for another five years is how a lift drops a car. Real Dimensions: What Actually Has to Fit
Numbers first, opinions later. A typical 10,000 lb clearfloor two post needs 12 feet of ceiling minimum for the overhead beam, and 13 to 14 feet if you want to raise a full-size pickup to full height without kissing the crossbar. Baseplate models drop that requirement to roughly 11 feet but put a steel plate and hydraulic line across the floor between the columns, which is a real tripping and rolling-tool-cart problem in a restoration bay where parts carts move constantly.
Bay width is the other hard constraint. Columns on a 10,000 lb asymmetric unit typically sit about 11 to 12 feet apart outside-to-outside, and you want a minimum of 12 feet of clear bay width, 14 feet if you plan to open doors on both sides of a wide car — which, on a restoration project, you absolutely will. The shop we worked with had a loft on one wall and a 16-foot overhead door, giving them 15 feet of usable width and 12 feet 4 inches under the loft header. That killed the clearfloor option in that specific bay. We put the unit in the adjacent bay instead, which had open trusses. This is the sort of thing a tape measure resolves in ten minutes and a phone argument never resolves at all. Anyone shopping automotive two post lifts should have four numbers written down before they call: ceiling height, clear width, door height, and slab thickness.
Concrete: The Number Most Buyers Guess Wrong
Manufacturers generally require 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb two post, and 6 inches for heavier capacities. We have lost count of how many customers tell us “it’s probably five inches” and turn out to have three and a half over gravel. A guy in northern Missouri told us his slab was about five inches, maybe less. It was four and an eighth in one spot and three and a quarter fifteen feet away where an old addition met the original pour.
Testing is not complicated. Drill a quarter-inch pilot hole at each planned column location and measure depth with a wire. Do it at all four anchor clusters, not one. If you come up short, the standard fix is a cut-out and pour — typically a 4-by-4-foot pad at each column, 8 to 12 inches deep, tied into the existing slab with rebar dowels, cured 28 days before anchoring. That adds cost and time but it is far cheaper than the alternative. Anchor pullout on undersized concrete is the single most common catastrophic failure mode we see with automotive two post lifts, and it does not announce itself. The lift works fine for two years, then the anchors start weeping concrete dust, then one day the column moves. If you are buying used, remember that the seller’s slab was not your slab and their success proves nothing about yours.
The Honest Case for Buying Used
We are a distributor, so you would expect us to push new. We do not, always. There is a genuine case for used equipment and we have helped plenty of customers make it work. The best used buys we see are dealership trade-outs — Rotary or Challenger units that came out of a franchise service department during a remodel, ten to fifteen years old, with documented annual inspections and a service history you can actually read. Those lifts were built heavy, maintained on a schedule, and often ran fewer cycles than you’d guess because dealerships over-build bay counts.
What makes a used unit worth buying is parts availability, not condition. A well-supported Rotary SPOA10 with a rusty column is a better purchase than a pristine off-brand unit whose manufacturer folded in 2011. The Honest Case for Buying New
The family shop near the border ended up buying new, and the deciding factor was not price or safety — it was arm geometry. Their restoration work involves a lot of unibody cars from the 1960s and 1970s with pinch welds in odd places, plus the occasional truck frame. Modern asymmetric two post designs with three-stage front arms reach pickup points that a 1990s symmetric unit simply cannot get to without stacking blocks, and stacking blocks is exactly how you end up with a car sliding off a pad.
New also buys you warranty, current ALI certification, and a lift that meets the standard your insurance carrier is going to ask about after any incident. Price-wise, a solid new 10,000 lb clearfloor unit from a name brand lands in the mid-four-figure to low-five-figure range depending on options, freight, and install. Used equipment often lands at 40 to 60 percent of that, but budget for a full parts refresh — cables, latch springs, and often a cylinder — which frequently closes half the gap. The customer who tells us he doesn’t want to spend five figures on a lift and then buys a bargain unit plus new cables plus a concrete pour has usually spent more than the person who bought new. We say that to people constantly. About half listen. The other half call us eighteen months later to buy cables, and we sell them cables without saying we told you so.
Installation Details That Separate Good Jobs From Bad
Shimming is where most self-installs go wrong. Columns must be plumb within the manufacturer’s tolerance — usually about an eighth of an inch over the column height — and on a garage floor with drainage slope, that means shims. Steel shims, stacked no more than a specified number deep, under the full footprint of the base plate, not just at the corners. We have pulled apart installs where somebody stacked six washers under one corner and called it good. That loads the anchor in shear and bending instead of tension, and it is exactly how column bases crack.
Anchor torque is the second detail. Wedge anchors get set to a specific torque value, checked, and then re-checked after the first few cycles under load because the concrete relaxes slightly. Overhead equalization cable tension gets set so both carriages rise together within a quarter inch, and it needs adjusting again after break-in. On the border shop install we came back at the 30-day mark and re-torqued anchors, re-tensioned cables, bled the cylinder, and adjusted the arm restraints — all of it billable time that most owners skip and then pay for later in uneven lifting and premature sheave wear. If you buy anywhere and install yourself, at least have somebody who knows automotive two post lifts do a paid commissioning check before you put a car on it.
How We Walk a Buyer Through the Decision
