Layout One: The Rolling Jack Setup for High-Volume Maintenance
The first configuration we quoted was built around speed. This layout adds a single rolling bridge jack that travels the length of the runway, letting a tech lift a wheel end for brake or bearing work without pulling the car off the lift or repositioning it. For a shop doing steady daily maintenance, oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations, this is the accessory setup that keeps cars moving through the bay fastest, because the tech never has to break down the vehicle’s position on the platform to reach a wheel.
We paired this jack with a set of casters so it could be shared between two adjacent 4-post lifts if the shop ever expanded its bay count, which is common for pro shops in growing areas like Waukee that expect to add a second lift within a couple years. The tradeoff is that this layout doesn’t give you much extra room to work underneath the full length of the vehicle at once, since the jack and runway structure are the priority, not open floor space below. We measure actual usable width, not just the quoted bay dimension, because support columns, tool chests, and parts carts eat into that space fast in a real working shop.
Extended ramps, on the other hand, need additional depth in front of the lift, since the whole point is a gentler approach angle over a longer distance. A shop with a deep but narrower bay tends to lean toward extended ramps, while a shop with a wide but shallower footprint often does better with the rolling jack configuration. We always walk the actual space before finalizing an accessory quote, because a layout that works beautifully on paper can be unworkable once tool carts and a second technician are actually moving around it.
Casters, Portability, and Planning for a Second Lift
One thing we push independent shop owners to think about early is whether accessories should be portable or fixed. Casters on a rolling jack let you shift it between two lifts if you’re planning to add a second bay down the line, which is smart if you’re not ready to buy two full jack setups on day one.
