BendPak XPR-10 Pre-Purchase Checklist for Exhaust & Driveline Work

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A weekend mechanic in Cedar Rapids reached out to us recently about putting a BendPak XPR-10 in his detached garage, mostly for exhaust work and driveline swaps on his own trucks. That’s a great use case for this lift, but before anyone signs a quote, there’s a checklist worth going through — because the single biggest reason home installs go sideways isn’t the lift itself, it’s the concrete underneath it. Auto Lift Services installs these two-post lifts throughout Cedar Rapids and the rest of Iowa, and we’d rather walk you through the pre-purchase questions now than show up to a slab that can’t handle the anchors.

Start With Your Slab, Not the Lift Spec Sheet

Before you fall in love with the telescoping arm design or the drop-end arms on a BendPak XPR-10, walk out to your garage and figure out what your slab actually is. Most home garages built more than a decade ago, especially in older Cedar Rapids neighborhoods, were poured for parking cars, not anchoring a 10,000-lb capacity two-post lift with columns bearing concentrated point loads.

BendPak’s install spec generally calls for a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound, unreinforced concrete cured for at least 28 days, though thicker is always safer and required in some configurations. If your slab has visible cracking, spalling, or you’re not sure of its age, that’s step one to resolve — not step three after the lift is already sitting in your driveway. We’ve turned away installs, respectfully, when a slab clearly wasn’t going to hold, and we’d rather tell you that before you buy than after.

Rebar: Why It Cuts Both Ways

A lot of people assume rebar in the slab is automatically a good thing. Sometimes it is — it can add tensile strength. But rebar also complicates anchoring, because you can’t drill an anchor bolt straight into a piece of rebar without compromising the hole. We use a rebar scanner on every pre-install site visit for exactly this reason, mapping where the steel sits before anyone touches a hammer drill.

If your garage slab was poured with a grid of rebar or wire mesh near the surface, we adjust anchor positions slightly within BendPak’s allowable footprint to avoid it, or in rare cases recommend a small reinforced pad poured specifically for the columns. For a hobbyist setting up a bay for exhaust and driveline work, this isn’t the fun part of the project, but skipping it is how a column ends up anchored into three-quarter-inch of concrete over open air. That’s not a risk worth taking under a truck on jack stands, let alone one hanging on two columns.

Clearance for Exhaust and Driveline Work Specifically

Exhaust and driveline access changes what you actually want out of a BendPak XPR-10 compared to, say, a shop doing tire work. You’re going to be under the vehicle a lot, often with a transmission jack or a torch, and you want enough rise height that you’re not crouching for an hour cutting out a rusted muffler. The XPR-10 line offers extension options, so think through your garage’s ceiling height and how tall you want the lift arms swinging up before locking in a configuration.

You’ll also want to think about column spacing relative to your longest wheelbase vehicle. Driveline work on full-size trucks needs enough clearance that a dropped transfer case or driveshaft doesn’t clip a column on the way down. This is a case where telling your installer exactly what kind of work you’re doing — not just “cars and trucks” — changes the configuration we’d recommend.

Overhead Clearance and Door Swing in a Home Garage

Garage ceiling height trips up more home buyers than almost anything else on this checklist. A BendPak XPR-10 with a padded overhead safety shutoff bar needs real headroom above the vehicle at full rise, and if you’ve got garage door tracks, storage shelving, or ductwork running across your ceiling, you need to measure clearance at the actual lift point, not just the tallest point in the room.

We ask every Cedar Rapids hobbyist to measure from the slab to the lowest ceiling obstruction directly above where the lift will sit, then compare that against the lift’s rise height plus your tallest vehicle. If you’re tight, a lower-profile arm configuration or a slightly shorter rise setting can still get you full driveline access without needing to reframe your garage door header, which is a conversation worth having before you order rather than after delivery.

Power, Air, and the Stuff Nobody Thinks About

The BendPak XPR-10 needs a dedicated electrical circuit for the power unit, and most home garages built for basic use don’t have one sitting there waiting. Figure out your electrical situation before delivery day — running a new circuit is a lot easier before the lift arrives and takes up floor space than after.

You’ll also want compressed air nearby if you’re planning exhaust work with pneumatic cutoff tools or air ratchets for driveline bolts, though that’s separate from the lift’s own operation. None of this is complicated, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when someone’s excited about a new lift and hasn’t thought through the rest of the garage setup that supports it.

Delivery and Unloading: Plan This Before You Order

A BendPak XPR-10 shows up as a genuinely heavy freight shipment — columns, arms, and a power unit crated and palletized. If you don’t have a loading dock or a forklift, unloading becomes a real logistics question, not an afterthought. We coordinate liftgate delivery for home installs regularly, but it’s worth confirming upfront rather than discovering on delivery day that the truck can’t get the crate off without help.

For a Cedar Rapids driveway or garage delivery, we typically schedule the drop with enough notice that you can arrange a few extra hands or have us handle the unloading and initial placement as part of the install package. This is a small detail that saves a genuinely stressful morning.

Final Checklist Before You Sign

Before you commit to a BendPak XPR-10, confirm: slab thickness and age, rebar location if known, ceiling clearance at the lift point, available electrical circuit, delivery access for a forklift or liftgate truck, and the specific arm and rise configuration that matches exhaust and driveline work rather than general use. Every one of these is fixable if caught early and expensive or frustrating if caught after the lift is bolted down.

We walk hobbyist buyers through this exact list before every Cedar Rapids quote, because a lift installed right the first time on a slab that can actually hold it is a lift you’ll use for twenty years without thinking twice about it. That’s the goal — not just selling a BendPak XPR-10, but making sure it fits the garage it’s going into.
