A few months back, an off-road builder near Council Bluffs called us trying to figure out the best 2-post lift for home garage use on a fleet of lifted trucks and overlanding rigs he services himself. The Garage: Plenty of Room, Modest Ceiling

This build’s garage was a detached two-and-a-half stall structure with a slightly raised roofline, giving him about 11 feet of ceiling clearance and a wide, deep bay he’d cleared out specifically for lift installation. He wasn’t short on floor space, which is more than we can say for a lot of home garage calls we get. The challenge wasn’t fitting the lift physically, it was matching a lift to trucks that sit taller and wider than stock, with aftermarket rock sliders and bumpers that don’t always line up with standard factory lift points.

For oil changes and fluid service specifically, you don’t need the same reach and arm flexibility that a full brake or suspension job demands, but you do need arms that can find a clean frame point on a truck that’s been modified. We walked him through symmetric arm reach on a couple of options and confirmed his tire size and lift height wouldn’t cause the vehicle to clip the columns during a full rise, which is a real risk on wider trucks in a standard-width 2-post footprint.

Why Brand History Mattered More Than the Spec Sheet

He’d been comparing a few options online, some at attractively low prices, and asked us directly whether he’d be buying something built without any real US parts or service history behind it. That’s a fair question, and it’s one we hear often from serious hobbyists who plan to keep a lift running for fifteen or twenty years. Rotary has been building lifts in the US since the 1920s and has one of the deepest parts pipelines in the industry, meaning if a cable, arm restrictor, or hydraulic component ever needs replacing, it’s not a special-order guessing game.

BendPak has a similarly established track record in the home and light-commercial space, with a broad dealer and service network that makes finding parts and support straightforward years after purchase. We steered him away from a couple of budget imports precisely because of this history gap. When you’re servicing your own overlanding rig and can’t afford a lift sitting broken for a month waiting on a part from overseas, buying into an established brand’s supply chain is part of choosing the best 2-post lift for home garage use, not just a nice-to-have.

Sizing the Lift to Modified, Not Stock, Vehicles

Overlanding builds often carry more weight than their stock counterparts once you add winches, roof top tents, drawer systems, auxiliary fuel, and armor. A truck that left the factory rated well under a standard lift’s capacity can creep close to it once fully built out. We always ask overlanding customers for their loaded weight, not the door-jamb sticker weight, before recommending capacity.

In this case, a 9,000 lb lift left comfortable margin even with his heaviest build accounted for, and we didn’t need to push him into a full 10,000 lb+ commercial-grade unit since he wasn’t running anything approaching that weight. That said, we always round up rather than sizing to the exact number, because a lift running near its rated ceiling daily wears differently than one with breathing room. For oil changes and fluid service on trucks this size, arm reach and ground clearance under the vehicle at full extension mattered more than raw tonnage.

Baseplate Configuration for an 11-Foot Ceiling

With 11 feet of ceiling height, overhead configurations were technically possible but tight once you accounted for the raised suspension and taller stance of his trucks. We recommended baseplate, the same call we make in most home garage installs across Iowa, because it removed any question of clearance between an overhead crossbar and a truck already riding several inches taller than stock.

Baseplate also simplified installation in his garage, since anchoring didn’t require coordinating overhead structural work in a building that wasn’t originally engineered as a commercial shop bay. For a home garage doing routine oil changes and fluid service rather than heavy-duty commercial work, baseplate configurations consistently come out ahead once ceiling height and vehicle height both get factored in, and this install was no exception.

What the Concrete Told Us Before We Anchored Anything

Before scheduling installation, we inspected his slab. The garage had been poured more recently than the house itself, giving us a clean 4-plus inches of solid concrete with no visible cracking or settling, which is about as good a starting point as we see on residential installs. That mattered because a lift handling modified trucks with elevated centers of gravity puts uneven stress through the columns during loading and unloading, and a marginal slab is the last thing you want under that kind of use.

Where we do find thinner or older concrete in similar Iowa garages, we’re upfront that a new pad may be necessary before the lift goes in. It’s not the answer anyone wants to hear mid-project, but skipping that step to save time is how columns end up leaning within a couple of years. In this case, the floor cooperated and installation went smoothly on the delivery timeline we quoted him, which typically runs a week and a half to two weeks from order to delivery, with installation completed the same day as delivery whenever our crew is already working nearby.

The Lift That Fit the Build

We ultimately installed a Rotary baseplate 2-post lift rated for his loaded truck weights with margin to spare, sized to his 11-foot ceiling and wide garage bay.
