A weekend mechanic in Iowa City called us on a Saturday morning about a used car lift automotive listing he had found forty minutes away — a mid-2000s two-post, seller said it worked fine, cash only, come get it. He wanted to do exhaust and driveline work on a project truck and a couple of daily drivers, and the price looked too good to ignore. We asked him three questions over the phone: do the arm restraints lock, do you hear the safety cams click on the way up, and is there a data plate still riveted to the column. He did not know. That is a normal answer, and it is exactly why we put this pre-purchase checklist together for anyone shopping used equipment in eastern Iowa.

Why Exhaust and Driveline Work Demands Solid Restraints

Exhaust and driveline jobs are the ones where you push and pull sideways on a vehicle while it is in the air. You are hanging on a rusted flange bolt with a breaker bar, prying a driveshaft out of a transfer case yoke, or wrestling a full cat-back into position. Every one of those actions puts lateral load into the arms. If an arm can swing under load, the vehicle can shift on the pads — and a vehicle shifting on pads at 60 inches is how people get hurt.

Arm restraints exist for exactly that. On a two-post, each arm has a gear-and-pin or gear-and-sleeve mechanism that locks the arm’s swing once the pad contacts the vehicle and the lift starts rising. The teeth engage, the arm stops rotating, and the vehicle stays where you set it. On the used unit our Iowa City caller was looking at, restraints were the first thing we told him to test, because a worn restraint gear is invisible until the moment it matters. Any car lift automotive purchase — new or twenty years old — starts and ends with whether that system works as designed. If the arms swing freely with weight on them, walk away or budget a restraint rebuild before the first vehicle goes up.

How to Test Arm Restraints Before You Hand Over Money

Bring a vehicle if the seller will allow it, or at least bring a floor jack and some weight. With the arms fully lowered and free, they should swing smoothly through their range with no binding and no grinding. Then set the pads under a vehicle, raise the lift two or three inches until the tires just leave the ground, and try to swing each arm by hand. It should not budge. Not a little. If it clunks and moves an inch, the restraint gear teeth are worn or the pin is not dropping.

Look at the restraint housing on each arm. On most Rotary and Challenger designs you can see the gear and the engaging pin or sleeve. Rust scale, missing return springs, a bent pin, or a gear with rounded teeth are all replaceable, but you need to price those parts before you agree on a number. Four restraint kits plus labor can add real money to a cheap used lift. Testing this properly is the single highest-value ten minutes in any car lift automotive inspection, and most buyers skip it entirely because they are focused on whether the thing goes up.

Listening for Safety-Cam Engagement on the Way Up

A healthy two-post talks to you. As the carriages rise, spring-loaded safety latches drop into ladder slots or notches in the column, and you hear a steady rhythmic click-click-click from both sides. That is the mechanical lock that holds the load if hydraulic pressure is ever lost. When you release the up button, the carriage settles onto the nearest latch and the load transfers off the cylinder onto steel.

Things to listen for: clicks from both columns, roughly in sync. If one side is silent, that latch is stuck, gummed with old grease, or its spring is broken. If the clicks are irregular or you hear scraping, the latch is dragging in its pocket. Then test the lock itself — raise to a mid-height, release, and watch for the carriages to drop a fraction of an inch onto the latches and stop dead. If it keeps creeping down, you have a cylinder or valve leak, and the latches may not be seating. A car lift automotive unit that will not hold on its safety cams is not usable in your garage until that is fixed. These parts are cheap relative to the risk — latch kits and springs are commonly stocked items — but you want to know before you load a trailer. Cables, Sheaves, and Equalization

Two-post lifts use equalizer cables to keep both carriages traveling together. Those cables run over sheaves at the top and bottom of the columns and through the overhead or the baseplate. They are wear items with a finite life, and on a used lift you should assume nothing about their condition until you look.

Inspect the full visible run for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, and rust bloom. Run a rag along the cable — if it snags, you have broken wires and the cable is done. Check the sheaves for grooves worn deep or flanges cracked. Look at the cable ends and adjustment nuts for evidence of someone cranking tension hard to compensate for a stretched cable. Uneven carriage height at full rise is a tell. Also check whether a slack-cable safety device exists and moves freely, because on many designs that mechanism is what trips the latches if a cable fails. Data Plates, Manuals, and Whether It Was Ever ALI Certified

Find the serial and capacity plate. It is usually riveted to a column near eye level. That plate gives you model, serial, capacity, and often the manufacture year, and it is what lets us pull the correct parts breakdown. A missing plate is not automatically a deal-breaker, but it makes parts identification a photo-and-measurement exercise instead of a lookup.

Ask whether the seller has the installation and operation manual. Ask whether the unit carried an ALI gold label. Plenty of perfectly serviceable older lifts predate current certification programs, and plenty of imported units never had it. You are not disqualifying a lift for lacking a label — you are gathering information about what standard it was built to and what parts support exists behind it. A twenty-year-old Rotary with no manual is still very supportable because the parts pipeline is deep. A no-name unit from a brand that vanished in 2011 may have nothing available, which turns a bargain car lift automotive purchase into a garage ornament. That is the honest calculus we walk callers through, and sometimes the answer is that a new entry-level lift with a warranty costs less than resurrecting the used one.

Your Garage: Concrete, Ceiling, and Power

The Iowa City caller had a 1990s attached garage with a nine-foot ceiling. That immediately narrowed his options. A full-rise two-post needs the overhead structure or a baseplate design plus enough clear height to raise a vehicle to working level, and nine feet does not get you exhaust-work access on a truck. We steered him toward either a mid-rise scissor for the sedan work or a genuine conversation about whether the driveline jobs happen at all in that building.

Concrete is the other gate. Home garage slabs are frequently three-and-a-half to four inches with no reinforcement and control joints in awkward places. Two-post anchor specs generally want four inches minimum of sound 3,000 PSI concrete with adequate edge distance, and we would rather core-test than assume. Power for a single-phase power unit means a dedicated 230V circuit in most cases, which is an electrician line item. None of this is meant to talk anybody out of owning a car lift automotive setup at home — plenty of our customers do it successfully. It is meant to get the building assessed before the equipment shows up on a trailer with no place to go. Measure the ceiling at the lowest point, including the garage door track when it is open.

Putting the Checklist Together and Making the Call

Run the list in order: data plate present, arms swing free when down, arms lock solid under load, safety cams click on both columns, carriage settles onto latches and holds, cables clean with no broken strands, sheaves not grooved, cylinder not weeping, power unit runs without cavitating, anchors and column bases not cracked or rusted through, hoses not seeping at the fittings. Photograph everything. If four or more items fail, the price needs to drop substantially or you should keep looking.

Our Iowa City caller ended up passing on that listing. Two arm restraints were seized, one column’s latch never clicked, and there was no plate. Between restraint kits, latch parts, cables, and freight, he was into it deeper than a warrantied new lift sized correctly for his ceiling. He bought a mid-rise instead and does his exhaust work on it happily.
