That is a smarter starting point than most people realize. Plenty of buyers shop on capacity and price alone, then discover twelve months later that the arm restraints were worn out, the safety cams never fully seated on one column, and the inspector had a list. We installed that lift, came back for the first annual service, and learned enough along the way that it is worth writing down for anyone in central Iowa about to do the same thing.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Needed a Two-Post at All

Most RV work happens on the ground or over a pit, and that is exactly why this shop had gotten by for years without a lift. But their business had drifted. Tow vehicles, service trucks, dually pickups, utility trailers with independent torsion axles — more and more of the work coming through the door was chassis work on something that fit under a conventional lift just fine. They were doing brake jobs on three-quarter-ton trucks on jack stands, and the owner did the math on labor hours lost to crawling around a shop floor. A 12,000 lb two-post with tall columns and three-stage front arms covered probably eighty percent of what they were fighting with.

The capacity conversation mattered more than usual here. A loaded service truck with a utility body and a full parts inventory can push past what a 10,000 lb unit should be asked to hold, and RV shops tend to underestimate curb weights because they are used to talking in gross vehicle weight ratings. We spent a full phone call just establishing what the heaviest realistic vehicle would be, then sized up one tier from there. That is standard practice for us — nobody has ever regretted extra capacity, and plenty of shops have regretted the opposite. The Waukee bay had 13 feet of clearance under the trusses, which is what made a clear-floor overhead model workable instead of forcing a baseplate design.

Arm Restraints Are the Part Inspectors Look At First

If you want to know whether a lift has been maintained, look at the arm restraints. They are the small gear-and-pin assemblies at the base of each swing arm that lock the arm from rotating once the vehicle is off the ground. On a Rotary or Challenger two-post they are simple: a spring-loaded pin drops into a toothed gear, and you release it by lifting the collar. When they work, you never think about them. When the teeth round off or the spring weakens, the arm can creep under load, and that is the failure mode that drops vehicles.

The Waukee shop’s inspector went straight to the restraints on the first annual, which is what we told them to expect. Every arm has to lock positively in multiple positions, and the pin has to seat fully — not partway, not with a wobble. We had already replaced one restraint gear during install because the arm had been dropped in shipping, so the shop had a spare on the shelf and knew what a good one felt like. That familiarity is worth something. Anybody running a car lift automotive setup in a production bay should physically test all four restraints weekly, not annually, because they are cheap to replace and expensive to ignore. We stock the gears, pins, and springs for the common Rotary and Challenger models, so a bad restraint is usually a same-week fix rather than a bay sitting idle.

Safety-Cam Engagement: What “Both Columns Clicking” Actually Means

The second thing that separates a lift that passes inspection from one that does not is safety-cam engagement. Every two-post has a ladder of mechanical locks running up each column, and the carriage cams have to drop into them evenly. You hear it as clicking on the way up. What you are listening for is the same number of clicks from both columns at the same heights — if the left side clicks and the right side is a beat behind, the equalizer cables have stretched or the carriage is out of level.

On the Waukee install, the shop noticed within a couple months that the passenger column sounded quieter. That is exactly the call we want to get, because at that stage it is a fifteen-minute cable adjustment. Left alone for a year, the same drift becomes an uneven lift that stresses the arms and eventually fails inspection. When we came out for the first annual service, we cycled the lift empty to the top, confirmed both cams seated in the same lock position, checked cable tension, and reset the lowering interlock so the lift will not descend unless both cams release together. That interlock is a genuine safety feature, not a nuisance, and we have seen shops defeat it out of impatience. Do not do that. If your car lift automotive equipment refuses to come down, something is out of adjustment and the lift is telling you so.

Install Day: Anchors, Concrete, and Iowa Slabs

Waukee is newer construction than a lot of what we work in, and this shop’s slab was six inches of decent concrete with a reasonable cure age. That is a best-case scenario. We still core-tested before drilling, because “the builder said six inches” and “there are actually six inches under this specific column location” are different claims. We have pulled cores in central Iowa shops that went from six inches down to three and a half within eight feet, usually where a trench was backfilled and topped off.

Anchor bolts get torqued to the manufacturer spec — not to feel, not to whatever the impact does — and then re-torqued after the first few weeks of use. Concrete relaxes slightly around a new anchor, and a bolt that read correct on install day can read low a month later. That re-torque is one of the items we build into a first-year service visit, and it is the single most commonly skipped maintenance step on any car lift automotive install we inspect. We also shimmed the columns plumb before final torque, because a column leaning even a degree out of vertical loads the carriage rollers unevenly and wears the slide blocks fast. Getting the plumb right on install day is free; fixing the wear it causes two years later is not. The First Six Months: What Actually Went Wrong

Two things, and neither was dramatic. First, the shop’s techs got in the habit of setting the front arms too far forward on tow vehicles with long front overhangs, which put the load center ahead of where it belongs and made the lift feel tippy on the way up. That is a training issue, not a hardware issue. We walked their crew through reading the manufacturer’s lift-point diagrams and showed them how to check balance by taking the vehicle up six inches, stopping, and pushing on a bumper corner before going higher.

Second, they had a slow hydraulic weep at the power unit fitting. Not a leak on the floor — just a film that showed up as dust sticking to the cylinder body. We tightened the fitting, topped the reservoir, and told them to watch the fluid level monthly. Small weeps are normal on a new unit as fittings settle; a level that keeps dropping is not. The other thing worth mentioning is noise. New two-posts are loud for the first few weeks as the slide blocks bed in, and shops sometimes read that as a defect. It usually is not. We tell people to grease the columns per the manual, cycle the lift a dozen times, and call us if the noise changes character rather than just getting louder under load. Passing the Annual Inspection Without Drama

The annual inspection on a car lift automotive installation is not a mystery test. It follows the ALI/ANSI checklist, and you can read that checklist ahead of time. The inspector will look at anchor bolt torque, arm restraint function in every position, safety-cam engagement and release on both columns, cable and chain condition including the equalizer, hydraulic hose routing and condition, the power unit and reservoir, all decals and load capacity labels, and the overhead shutoff bar if the lift has one. Nothing on that list is a surprise.

The Waukee shop passed clean. Not because the lift was new — plenty of one-year-old lifts fail — but because they had already fixed the cable drift, replaced the damaged restraint, re-torqued the anchors, and kept the capacity decals legible instead of letting brake dust and degreaser eat them. We spent about an hour on the pre-inspection walkthrough the week before, which is a service we do for shops across the Des Moines metro, and the whole point is that there should be no news on inspection day. The failures we find are almost always cheap parts and adjustment, not major structural problems, and finding them early is what keeps a bay earning.

What We’d Tell the Next Shop Buying One

Buy more capacity than your current heaviest vehicle. Buy the arm configuration that matches the vehicles you actually service — three-stage front arms for short-wheelbase trucks and unibody cars, standard arms if everything you touch is a full-size pickup. Verify your ceiling height before you commit to an overhead model, and verify your slab before anyone drills. Budget for a professional install rather than a weekend with a rented forklift, because the difference shows up in plumb columns and correctly torqued anchors that hold for a decade.

Then treat maintenance as part of the cost of ownership, not an optional add-on. A greased column, an adjusted cable, and a working set of restraints turn a car lift automotive purchase into fifteen or twenty years of service. Neglect turns the same lift into an inspection failure at year three. The Waukee shop is now looking at a second lift for trailer axle work, and the conversation is going faster this time because they know what questions matter.
