Every February we get the same phone call from someone farming ground between Davenport and Des Moines: the shop has a pit, a floor jack, and forty years of stubbornness, and this year the budget finally has room for a real hoist. The question is always framed the same way — which car lift automotive brand is actually worth the money, and will parts still exist for it in 2045? That is the right question to ask, and it is not the one most catalogs answer. Why brand history matters more than the spec sheet
Two hoists can share the same lifting capacity, the same overall height, and nearly the same price, and be twenty years apart in real service life. The difference is almost never in the numbers printed on the placard. It is in whether the manufacturer has been building the same architecture long enough to have worked the failures out of it, and whether that company still exists in a form that answers the phone. We have pulled cables on units where the sheave bore had worn oval in eight years because the bushing spec was wrong from the factory. We have also serviced Rotary two-posts installed during the Carter administration that needed nothing but a cylinder reseal and a new set of arm restraint gears.
Brand history also tells you something about parts geometry. A manufacturer that has run the same carriage and arm pattern across three decades has a parts bin that overlaps generations, which means a replacement pad or a restraint pawl for your 1994 unit is likely still on a shelf somewhere. A brand that redesigned everything every five years to chase a price point leaves you orphaned. When a farm shop owner asks us about car lift automotive brands, we start by asking how long they plan to be in that building. If the answer is “until my kid takes over,” the conversation narrows fast to two or three names.
The tire rotation and wheel work reality check
Farm shops rarely buy a hoist for engine work. They buy it because rotating tires on a three-quarter-ton pickup on a creeper in January is a young man’s game and nobody in the building is young anymore. Tire and wheel work is a specific duty cycle, and it changes what you should buy. You are going up and down constantly, you need the wheels free-spinning, and you need to be able to walk a 35-inch tire out from under the vehicle without dancing around a post.
That pushes most tire-focused shops toward an asymmetric two-post with a good swing-arm spread, or toward a four-post with a rolling jack if the shop also stores equipment overhead. Frequent cycling is harder on cables, sheaves, and the power unit than occasional heavy lifts are, so cable inspection intervals matter more than they do in a shop that lifts twice a day. We tell tire-heavy customers to plan on a cable set as a maintenance item, not a failure — budget for it the way you budget for shop air compressor rebuilds. Car lift automotive parts pipeline: the question nobody asks first
Here is the test we give every farm shop owner. Before you buy, call somebody and ask for the price and lead time on three parts for the exact model you are considering: a cable set, a cylinder seal kit, and one arm restraint gear. If you get three answers in under ten minutes, the parts pipeline is real. If you get a runaround, a “we’d have to check with the factory,” or a four-week lead time on a seal kit, you have learned something important about what year three of ownership is going to feel like.
We run that test on ourselves constantly, because we stock parts as a distributor and not just as an installer. That means when a hoist goes down in a shop between Iowa City and Moline on a Tuesday, we are usually shipping the same day or driving it. Capacity, and why 7,000 lb is usually the wrong answer
We got an inquiry a while back from a small independent shop in eastern Iowa with photos attached and a one-line message: “7,000 lb lift.” That is a common starting point, and it is usually wrong for a farm operation. A 7,000 lb rating sounds generous until you park a crew-cab three-quarter-ton diesel with a flatbed on it. Curb weight on that truck is already north of 8,000 lb before you add a toolbox and half a tank of fuel.
For farm shops we almost always recommend 10,000 lb as the floor and 12,000 lb as the comfortable answer, because the capacity premium between those tiers is small relative to the hoist’s total cost and it buys you every truck you will ever own. If you run grain trucks or service anything with duals, the conversation moves to 15,000 lb or 18,000 lb, and then ceiling height becomes the constraint rather than capacity. The other half of the capacity question is distribution. A two-post rating assumes the load is balanced across all four arms. Lift a truck with a heavy front-mounted implement bracket and you can overload one pair of arms while the total weight looks fine. That is where we see arm restraint damage and bent arm pins on otherwise healthy equipment, and it is not a capacity problem so much as a loading-habit problem.
Ceiling height, slab, and the things you cannot change later
Capacity is a purchase decision. Ceiling height and concrete are building decisions, and they are the ones that actually kill deals. Most machine sheds along the corridor were built with 12- to 14-foot sidewalls, which is plenty for a standard two-post clearfloor unit that needs roughly 12 feet to the top of the overhead beam. But plenty of older shops have 10-foot ceilings, purlins hanging lower than the owner thinks, or a garage door track running right through the spot they wanted the hoist.
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak. Then measure your slab. Most two-post units want four inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum, and a lot of manufacturers now specify more for higher capacities. Farm shop slabs are wildly inconsistent — we have found six inches of beautiful reinforced concrete in one bay and three and a half inches over gravel twelve feet away, because it was poured in two seasons by two different crews. We core-drill or at minimum hammer-test before we quote an install, and if the slab is thin, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad under each column rather than walking away. For a baseplate-style unit, add the overhead crossover to your headroom math. Getting these dimensions wrong is the single most expensive mistake in car lift automotive purchasing, because concrete work after the fact costs more than the price difference between any two brands you were considering.
Power, air, and the electrical detail that delays installs
The power unit is where farm shop installs stall out. Most commercial hoists ship configured for 208-230V single phase, and a lot of older machine sheds have a 100-amp panel feeding a welder, a compressor, and a couple of lights on the same run. The hoist motor draws hard on startup, and if it shares a circuit with the compressor you will find out about it at the worst possible time. We ask for a dedicated 20- to 30-amp circuit depending on the unit, and we ask about the panel before install day, not during it.
Three-phase is available on most models and is genuinely better if you have it, but very few farm shops do. Do not let anyone talk you into a three-phase unit on the promise of a rotary phase converter unless you have used one before. On the air side, most two-post hoists use shop air for the arm restraint release or the lock release, and that means you need a reliable air drop near the columns — not a 50-foot coil hose dragged over from the other end of the building. Low or wet air causes lock release problems that get misdiagnosed as hydraulic faults constantly. What we would buy if it were our shop
If we were putting a hoist in a farm shop between Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities tomorrow, the shortlist is short. For commercial and heavy-duty work we stay with Rotary and Challenger, and when the job goes past 30,000 lb we look at Challenger’s heavy series. For a home or hobby-adjacent building where the equipment doubles as vehicle storage, BendPak and Atlas both make honest four-post units at a price a family operation can justify. The distinction matters — a commercial-duty unit in a shop that lifts three times a week is money spent on durability you will never use, and a light-duty unit in a shop that lifts twenty times a day will hurt you.
What we would not do is buy on price alone from an online listing with no local service behind it. We get those calls too: someone bought a unit at auction or off a marketplace, it arrived without a manual, and now nobody can identify the cylinder to order seals. We can usually figure it out from photos and casting numbers, and we do it happily, but it is a rough way to start.
