A small-fleet operator near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us last spring with a straightforward question that turned out to be anything but: which car lift automotive configuration should he put in his shop building if the main job is tire rotation and wheel work on sixteen vehicles he owns? He was leaning four-post because he had seen one at a friend’s place. We ended up recommending something different, and the reasoning had less to do with the lift itself than with how a fleet actually rotates tires — in batches, on a schedule, usually on the worst weather day of the month. This article walks through that comparison honestly, plus the brand history and parts pipeline questions that decide whether your equipment is an asset or an anchor.

The Fleet Tire Problem Nobody Plans For

Fleet tire work has a rhythm that retail shops do not deal with. You are not rotating one customer’s tires and moving on. You are pulling four vans through in a morning, checking tread depth and pressure across the whole group, tracking which unit got new rubber in which quarter, and doing it while the vehicles are supposed to be earning money. Speed matters more than versatility. So does the ability to have a vehicle up and a second one staged.

That changes the calculus. On a two-post, you center the vehicle, set four arms, raise, do the work, lower, pull the arms clear, drive out. Call it three to four minutes of handling per vehicle beyond the actual wrench time. On a four-post with a rolling jack, you drive on, chock, roll the jack in, lift, work, drop, drive off — comparable time, but the vehicle is inherently more stable and a less-experienced hand cannot mis-set an arm pad. For a fleet operator whose “tech” is sometimes a driver who is good with tools, that matters. The operator near the Nebraska line had exactly that situation. His most common failure mode was not equipment failure, it was somebody rushing. A car lift automotive setup that reduces the number of ways a hurried person can get it wrong is worth real money in a fleet context.

Configuration A: The 10,000 lb Two-Post

A clearfloor asymmetric two-post at 10,000 lb capacity is the default American service bay for a reason. It gives you total underbody access, nothing on the floor between the columns, and the smallest footprint per usable bay. For tire and wheel work it is genuinely excellent — wheels hang free automatically, you can spin a hub, inspect a rotor, and check a wheel bearing without any extra equipment.

The costs are real though. You need good concrete and permanent anchoring. You need trained arm placement on every single lift, because a pad on a rocker seam instead of a pinch weld will crush sheet metal and a pad under a plastic underbody panel will do worse. You need overhead clearance around 12 feet for a standard overhead-beam model, or a baseplate version if you are working under a lower ceiling. And your fleet mix has to fit the capacity — a loaded three-quarter-ton service van with racks and inventory can push past 8,000 lb faster than people expect, so we usually spec 12,000 lb rather than 10,000 for mixed fleets. Lift point access on modern unibody vans is also getting worse, not better, with plastic cladding covering the factory jack points. Truck-adapter extension sets solve most of it, but they are another thing to buy and another thing to lose. For a shop with one skilled tech, the two-post is still the right answer most days.

Configuration B: The Four-Post With Rolling Jacks

The four-post flips the tradeoffs. You drive on, which means no lift point decisions and no arm placement. The vehicle is supported at all four wheels by its own tires on runways, which is about as stable as a vehicle gets. For a fleet with variable operators, that is the single biggest safety and speed argument.

To do wheel work you add rolling jacks — one or two air-hydraulic units that sit on the runways and lift the vehicle wheels-free. That is an extra purchase and it takes about ninety seconds to position, but once it is set, tire rotation on a four-post is fast and predictable. It also introduces the most common four-post service call we take: rolling jack adjustment. The jacks drift out of sync, the pads sag, or the runway spread does not match the jack frame after somebody moves it. All routine, all fixable, and all worth knowing about before you buy. The other four-post advantages for a fleet are storage and parking — you can leave a vehicle up overnight, stack a second vehicle in the same footprint if you buy a parking-height model, and you can install on a slab you would never anchor a two-post to. What We Recommended and Why

For the Iowa-Nebraska border operator, we went four-post with dual rolling jacks. Three reasons, in order of weight. First, his crew rotated — the person doing tires in March was not the person doing tires in September, and drive-on removes the highest-risk decision from an inexperienced operator. Second, his building had a slab of unknown thickness poured in the mid-70s, and coring it, cutting pads, and waiting a week to cure was not something he wanted to fund on top of the equipment. A four-post sits on the floor and only needs level, not anchors, in most jurisdictions and manufacturer specs.

Third, and this ended up mattering most, he needed to store a vehicle. Fleet operators always have one unit down waiting on a part. On a two-post that vehicle occupies your only bay indefinitely. On a four-post you drop it, roll it back, and keep working. He runs a mix of half-ton pickups and cargo vans, so we spec’d a 14,000 lb capacity unit with extended runways rather than a light-duty home model — the fleet car lift automotive install is not the same product as a garage storage lift, even though they look similar in a catalog photo. Six months in, his only service call was a rolling jack that needed the air line reseated. That is the outcome you want.

Brand History: Why Rotary and Challenger Keep Showing Up

Brand matters more in lifts than in most shop equipment, and the reason is longevity. You are buying something that will be bolted to your floor for twenty-five years. The question is not which brand is best today, it is which brand will still exist and still supply parts in 2045.

Rotary Lift has been building automotive lifts since the early 20th century and effectively invented the modern hydraulic service lift. That heritage matters practically: the SPO series two-post has been produced in recognizable form for decades, which means part numbers persist, cylinders cross-reference, and a shop with a 1998 unit can still get lock assemblies and arm pins. Challenger Lifts came up later and built a reputation on heavy commercial and four-post product, including the rolling jacks that show up in half the fleet shops we service. Both companies have real distribution networks and real technical support behind them, and both have survived multiple ownership changes without abandoning legacy parts. On the home and light-duty side, BendPak and Atlas cover the market well with their own parts channels. What we steer people away from is the unbranded import that shows up at a good price with no serial-tag documentation and no parts pipeline — we have taken calls from shops with a five-year-old car lift automotive unit that is functionally scrap because the importer folded and nobody makes the cylinder.

The Parts Pipeline Is the Whole Ballgame

Here is the part people underweight when they buy. Every lift will eventually need cables, a cylinder, seals, lock assemblies, or a power unit. The question is how many days you wait. For a fleet operator, a week of downtime on your only lift means your tire rotations do not happen, your PMs slip, and you are paying a shop in town to do work you built a building to do yourself.

We stock parts specifically to shorten that window. Equalization cables, hydraulic cylinders, seal kits, lock ladders, arm restraint gears, power units, and the odd carriage slide block — for the major brands, most of it ships same or next day. Serial tag identification is free; photograph the plate on the column and send it in and we will tell you exactly what you have and what fits. That is genuinely most of the traffic through our parts desk, and it is why we tell people the brand decision and the parts decision are the same decision. A slightly more expensive car lift automotive purchase from a manufacturer with a live supply chain will cost you less over fifteen years than a cheap one that strands you. If you are already running an orphan brand, do not panic — a lot of components cross-reference, and we can usually find something that works. Installation, Inspection, and Keeping It Running

Whichever configuration you land on, the install determines the first ten years. Four-posts need a level floor — we shim runways to spec, check cross-level and along-length level, set the equalization cables to matched tension, and cycle the lift under load before we sign off. Two-posts need verified concrete, torqued anchors, plumb columns, and a re-torque after the first few load cycles. Neither takes long when the site is ready, and both take a lot longer when it is not, which is why we do a site walk before we schedule.

After that it is annual inspection and monthly eyeballs. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for a documented yearly inspection by a qualified inspector, and for a commercial fleet operation that record matters if anything ever goes sideways with a workers’ comp claim or an insurance audit. Monthly, look at cable tension and fraying, check the lock engagement audibly on the way up, inspect the rolling jack pads for cracking, and top the hydraulic reservoir. Grease what the manual says to grease. It is fifteen minutes a month. We service the whole state and into eastern Nebraska, and the shops that do those fifteen minutes have lifts we barely hear from. The ones that skip it call us in February when the cables have stretched unevenly and the runways are two inches out of level. Either way we will come out — but the first group spends a lot less money.
