Why Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet
Every lift on the market can hold up a Silverado on paper. Capacity ratings, lifting heights, and rise times converge pretty tightly once you’re comparing serious equipment. Where brands separate is in the twenty-year tail — whether the company that built your lift still exists, still supports the model, and still ships parts to a distributor who can get them to Waukee. We’ve walked into shops with a fifteen-year-old lift wearing a brand name that changed hands three times, and the only way to keep it running is to cross-reference cylinder bores and hunt down a compatible seal kit. That’s doable. It’s also a week of downtime you didn’t plan for.
Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s and their part numbers from the 1990s still cross to something current. Challenger has a similar depth of continuity on their two-post and four-post lines, and their heavy-duty PKS series is built with the same philosophy. Alignment Work Puts Different Demands on a Lift
If the bay is going to run alignments, the equation shifts. General repair tolerates a lift that’s a sixteenth out of level. Alignment does not. You need a runway lift or a scissor with alignment provisions — rear slip plates, front turnplate pockets, and a structure that stays flat under a loaded vehicle. A four-post alignment rack with a rolling jack is the standard answer for most Iowa shops, and it’s what the Waukee foreman ended up with. The rolling jack matters more than people expect: it’s what lets you get wheels free for a tie rod or a control arm bushing without breaking down the setup.
We had a lead come through from a shop needing exactly that — a Challenger four-post with rolling jack service and a lift adjustment to bring the runways back into spec. That’s routine work for us, but it illustrates the point. A car lift automotive setup used for alignment needs periodic leveling checks, and the equalization cables need to be tensioned correctly or the runways drift apart over months of cycling. The Parts Pipeline: What Actually Happens When Something Breaks
Here’s the sequence nobody explains at the point of sale. Your lift throws a hydraulic leak on a Tuesday. You call a distributor. The distributor either has the seal kit in a warehouse in the Midwest, or they order it from the manufacturer, or the manufacturer orders it from a supplier overseas. Those three outcomes are two days, two weeks, and two months respectively. The brand you choose is what determines which one you get.

Two-Post vs. Four-Post for a Body Shop Bay
The Waukee shop already had two-post lifts in the general service bays and wanted to know whether adding another made sense for alignment. It doesn’t, usually. Two-post lifts are the right answer for wheel-off work, brake jobs, exhaust, and most under-car repair — they give you complete access to the wheels and the rocker area, and they take up less floor. But they don’t hold a vehicle at ride height with the suspension loaded, which is what alignment requires.
Four-post lifts do that natively. The tradeoff is footprint and the fact that under-car access is partially blocked by the runways. For a body shop that’s mixing collision repair with alignment verification, the four-post with a rolling jack is the versatile choice. For pure repair volume, two-post wins on throughput. Most shops we outfit in the Des Moines metro end up with a mix — two or three two-post columns for daily repair and one four-post dedicated to alignment and heavier vehicles. If floor space is tight, a mid-rise scissor can supplement, though it won’t replace either. Capacity, Column Height, and the Vehicles You Actually See
Iowa shops see a lot of three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups. A 9,000 lb two-post handles most of that comfortably, but if you’re regularly putting a loaded dually or a service van on the lift, 10,000 or 12,000 lb is the safer buy. The cost difference between a 10K and a 12K is real but not dramatic, and the extra capacity buys you margin you’ll use. On the four-post side, 12,000 to 14,000 lb covers nearly everything a general shop will encounter.
Column height and ceiling clearance kill more lift purchases than capacity does. Overhead two-post lifts need roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling for a standard column, and a lot of older Iowa shop buildings don’t have it. Floorplate models solve that at the cost of a bar across the floor. Baseplate versus overhead is one of the first questions we ask, because it’s the one that can’t be fixed after concrete is poured. Speaking of which — concrete matters. Most two-post installs need at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and we’ve cored plenty of Iowa shop floors that came back at three inches over gravel. We don’t publish exact prices because they move and because every install is different, but here are honest tiers. A quality home-garage four-post or two-post from BendPak or Atlas lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the equipment. A commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger two-post in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range runs mid four figures to low five figures depending on configuration. Heavy-duty and inground equipment goes up from there, and mobile column sets for trucks and buses are a different conversation entirely.
Installation is separate and typically runs a fraction of the equipment cost — more if you need concrete work, electrical runs, or an anchor test. We quote install as a line item so you can see it. What we push back on is the shop that buys the cheapest unit available and then discovers the freight was uncrated at the curb, the manual is a photocopied translation, and nobody will certify the install.
