A body shop foreman across the river in western Illinois called us last spring with a question that gets asked more than any other in the car lift automotive world: “Which brand actually still has parts in ten years?” His shop had inherited three lifts when they bought the building, and two of them were orphans — no data plate, no manufacturer still in business, no cylinder seal kit anywhere in North America. That is the real buying decision, and almost nobody frames it that way at the point of sale. Why Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

Every lift on the market lists a capacity, a lifting height, and a column spread. On paper, a lot of them look interchangeable. What the spec sheet does not tell you is whether the company behind it will answer the phone when a carriage slider block wears out or a hydraulic cylinder starts weeping past the gland nut. We have pulled cylinders off lifts built by companies that vanished during the 2009 downturn, and the only path forward was a custom reseal at a hydraulic shop — doable, but it costs real money and puts a bay down for a week.

Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s, and Challenger has decades of commercial production behind it. That history matters in a boring, unglamorous way: the part numbers stay in the system. When a foreman in western Illinois calls about a 2003 Rotary SPO9, we can still cross-reference the carriage, the cables, the equalizer sheaves, and the lock ladder. That continuity is the single most valuable feature you can buy in the car lift automotive market, and it never shows up in a side-by-side comparison chart. If you are weighing a well-known nameplate against an off-brand that undercuts it by a few thousand dollars, price out one cylinder rebuild and one cable set and the math usually flips before you finish the calculation.

Alignment Work Changes the Requirements Completely

General service and alignment are two different jobs, and the lift requirements diverge fast. For alignment you need a level, repeatable platform — typically a four-post alignment rack with front slip plates and rear turn plates, or a scissor alignment lift set into the floor. The runways have to be flat within tight tolerance, and the lift has to hold that geometry under load without twisting. A standard four-post storage lift will not do alignment work honestly, no matter how good the aligner head software is.

The shop in western Illinois we mentioned wanted to add alignment as a profit center alongside collision work, which is a smart move for a body shop — every frame pull and every suspension component replacement is an alignment sale you are currently sending down the street. We specced a four-post alignment rack with an integrated rolling jack so the techs could get wheels free for tie rod and control arm work without moving the vehicle to another bay. Slab thickness became the deciding factor: alignment racks want a good pour, and we ended up recommending a section of the floor be cut and repoured to 6 inches at 3,000 PSI. That is normal. Planning for it before the lift arrives is what separates a two-day install from a three-week headache. The Parts Pipeline: What We Actually Keep on the Shelf

People assume parts availability is a manufacturer issue. It is partly a distributor issue. A brand can have a part number in the system and still take three weeks to get it to central Illinois if nobody regional stocks it. We keep the fast-moving wear items in Ames: lift cables in common lengths, equalizer sheaves, carriage slider blocks, arm restraint gears and pins, lock releases, hydraulic hoses, power unit motors, and cylinder seal kits for the common Rotary and Challenger bores.

Those are the parts that put a bay down. Nobody calls us because a column is bent — they call because a cable frayed at the sheave, or the arm restraint stopped clicking, or the power unit hums but will not lift. Those failures are predictable, which means they are stockable. The parts that we do not keep on hand are the odd, brand-specific castings and the electronics for proprietary control boxes, and those are exactly where orphan brands hurt you most. When you buy into a nameplate with a real dealer network, you are buying into a regional inventory you never see. That is a genuine, measurable advantage in the car lift automotive category, and it is why we push customers toward brands we can actually support rather than whatever showed up cheapest in a search result. Two-Post, Four-Post, or Both — Reading Your Own Work Mix

The honest way to spec a shop is to look at last year’s tickets. If more than half your hours are brakes, suspension, exhaust, and tires, you want two-post asymmetric lifts because wheels-free access is where the labor is. If you are doing a lot of fluid service, transmission work, exhaust fabrication, or storage, four-post earns its keep. Most full-service shops we build out in Iowa and western Illinois end up with a mix: two or three two-posts and one four-post with a rolling jack.

Body shops skew differently. Collision work wants clear floor space, good access to rockers and quarter panels, and the ability to get a car up and leave it up for days while parts come in. That pushes toward two-post lifts with a wide column spread and, often, a set of mobile column lifts for the odd unibody van or dually that will not fit a conventional lift. We had a collision operation add four mobile columns instead of a fifth in-ground lift, and it turned out to be the better call — they could work a Sprinter one week and a fleet pickup the next without dedicating a bay. Nothing about the car lift automotive decision is universal; it is a read on your own ticket mix, your ceiling height, and how long vehicles sit. Capacity, Ceiling Height, and the 7,000 lb Trap

We get a fair number of calls that start with a capacity number and nothing else — “I need a 7,000 lb lift.” Sometimes that is the right answer, and sometimes it is a number someone remembered from a magazine ad. Capacity should be driven by the heaviest vehicle you will realistically service, plus margin. A half-ton crew cab pickup with a topper and a toolbox is pushing 7,000 lb by itself. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks are common in Iowa and Illinois farm country, and those want 10,000 lb minimum, 12,000 lb if you are servicing loaded work trucks.

Ceiling height is the other constraint people underestimate. A 10,000 lb two-post clearfloor lift with a 12-foot overhead beam needs real ceiling, and a lot of older shop buildings do not have it. The alternative is a baseplate configuration, which trades a floor plate for lower overhead clearance. We measure before we quote, every time, because a lift that does not physically fit is the most expensive mistake in this business. Also worth checking: door header height, sprinkler locations, light fixtures, and the swing radius of the arms at full extension. A car lift automotive install is a building project as much as an equipment purchase, and the buildings almost always have a surprise in them. We would rather find it with a tape measure than with a forklift and a delivery truck sitting in the lot.

Installation, ALI Certification, and Inspection Reality

ALI Gold certification means the lift design was independently tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards. It is not marketing fluff — it covers structural adequacy, load holding, overload protection, and the mechanical locks. For commercial shops, especially anything doing insurance-related collision work or fleet contracts, ALI certification is increasingly what the auditor asks about. Both Rotary and Challenger commercial lines carry it, and we recommend it without hedging for any shop with employees on the payroll.

Annual inspection is the other half. ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for a periodic inspection by a qualified inspector, and in practice that means someone checking cable tension and condition, lock engagement at every position, anchor bolt torque, cylinder condition, arm restraint function, and the concrete around the base plates. We do these routes across Iowa and into western Illinois, and the failures we find are boringly consistent: loose anchors, cables that should have been replaced two years ago, arm restraints that click but do not hold, and lock ladders worn past spec. An inspection catches those for a fraction of what a failure costs. If your car lift automotive equipment has never been formally inspected, that is worth fixing this year regardless of who you buy from next.

How We Quote and What to Ask Before You Sign

A real quote has more than a lift model and a number on it. Ours breaks out the equipment, the freight, the install labor, any concrete or electrical work, and the startup and training. Electrical is the line item that surprises people most often — most commercial two-post power units want 208-230V single phase, and if your bay only has 120V, an electrician is part of the project. Three-phase is available and sometimes cheaper to run if you already have it in the building. Ask any supplier to spell out who is responsible for the electrical drop, because “install included” often does not mean what buyers assume.

The other questions worth asking: who performs the install, are they factory-trained, what is the warranty on structure versus hydraulics versus electrical, what is the lead time on the specific model, and who do you call at 7 a.m. on a Tuesday when a lift will not come down with a car on it.
