If you’re a weekend mechanic shopping for a car lift automotive setup for a home garage, the single item most likely to bite you two years in isn’t the power unit or the columns — it’s the cables. We took a call from a hobbyist near Iowa City who’d bought a used four-post off a classifieds listing, hauled it home in a trailer, and got it standing in his 24×24 detached garage. It worked. It also had equalizer cables with visible broken strands and a lock that only caught on three of four corners. He wanted to change the differential fluid in a Jeep and a Chevy pickup, and he wanted to do it without wondering what was overhead. Here’s the checklist we walked him through.

Start With the Cables, Not the Paint

Used lifts sell on appearance, and that’s backwards. Fresh paint on the columns tells you nothing about the wire rope carrying the load. On a four-post, the four equalizer cables keep the runways level and, on most designs, they’re part of the safety system — if one lets go, the platform can drop on that corner until the lock catches. On a two-post, the equalizer cables synchronize the carriages. Either way, cables are consumable. They stretch, they corrode, they fatigue at the sheaves where they bend, and they broom out at the swage fittings.

When we inspect a lift for a buyer, cables get looked at first, with a good light and bare hands wearing gloves. We’re feeling for broken strands — a snagged glove finds them faster than your eyes do. We’re looking at the sheave contact zones, where wear concentrates, and at the anchor points and adjusting nuts, where corrosion concentrates. We count broken wires. Industry guidance is clear enough: any broken wire in the wire rope means replacement, not repair, and any visible corrosion pitting, kinking, or flattening means the same. Nobody splices a lift cable. If you’re evaluating a car lift automotive purchase and the seller says the cables are “probably fine,” budget for a full set and move on. A complete set is one of the cheapest line items on the whole machine relative to what it protects.

Realistic Inspection and Replacement Intervals

The intervals that matter depend far more on cycles and environment than calendar years, but home-garage owners need a number they’ll actually follow, so here’s what we tell people. Visual cable check: every month, thirty seconds per cable, lift at rest. Full hands-on inspection with the lift at working height and good light: every six months. Lubrication of the wire rope and sheaves: twice a year in a heated garage, more often if the space is unheated or damp. Annual professional inspection: yes, even at home — and especially if you bought used.

Replacement is a condition call, not a schedule, but patterns are consistent. In a busy commercial shop running twenty cycles a day, equalizer cables often want replacing somewhere in the three-to-six-year window. In a hobby garage doing a few dozen cycles a year, the same cables can go a decade or more — but only if they’re kept lubricated and out of standing water. That last part is the Iowa problem. Road salt drips off a truck all winter, pools on the floor, and wicks into the low anchor points. We’ve replaced cables on ten-year-old home lifts with maybe four hundred total cycles because the bottom eighteen inches of each cable had corroded. If your garage floor sees salt and slush from November to March, plan on a shorter interval than the manual implies, and check whether a used car lift automotive candidate came out of a similar environment.

The Rest of the Pre-Purchase Checklist

Cables are first, but they aren’t the whole list. Locks: cycle the lift up and stop at every lock position, listening for all locks to engage together. A lift that only catches on some corners has a linkage, cable, or spring problem, and on a used unit that often means someone disabled something they couldn’t fix. Cylinders: look for wet rods and oil tracks down the columns. A weeping seal is a repairable item; a scored rod is a cylinder. Power unit: watch it raise a loaded vehicle and time it. Slow, noisy, or hot means pump or fluid trouble.

Then the paperwork. Serial number legible and matching a model you can still get parts for. Original manual, ideally. Any install or service history. We’d rather buy a plain-looking Rotary or Challenger with a readable data plate than a repainted no-name unit with no traceable model, because parts availability decides whether a repair takes three days or three months. Structure: check base plates for distortion and column welds for cracks, especially near anchor holes — those tell you if the lift was ever anchored into bad concrete. Finally, ask how it’s coming out of the current building. Removal and transport of a four-post is a real job, and a lot of “great deal” lifts stop being deals once you price a rigger. Height, Capacity, and Actually Getting the Differential Fluid Out

Differential fluid service is the use case that exposes a lot of lift buying mistakes. It sounds easy — pull a fill plug, pull a drain plug or a cover, refill. In practice you’re working directly under the center of the vehicle, often two-handed, often with a suction gun and a drain pan, and often fighting a rear cover that has to come off with a scraper. You need the vehicle high enough to sit on a stool with your head above the pumpkin, not lying on your back with fluid running down your forearm.

That drives two numbers. First, rise height. A four-post at 60-plus inches of runway height gets most people comfortable; a home-storage four-post that tops out around 48 inches works but is tighter. Second, ceiling height. A 24×24 garage in Iowa City with a nine-foot ceiling and a garage door track running across it doesn’t have room for a truck at full rise, and that’s the constraint people discover after delivery. Measure to the lowest obstruction — door track, light fixtures, that one sagging joist — not to the peak. Capacity is the third piece: a half-ton pickup with a topper and a tank of gas is heavier than people guess, and a car lift automotive rated at 7,000 lb leaves less margin than you want. We generally point hobbyists toward 8,000 to 9,000 lb for four-posts and 9,000 or 10,000 lb for two-posts. Also plan where the fluid goes — a drain pan under a runway is easier than one under a two-post arm.

Two-Post or Four-Post for a Home Garage

For a weekend mechanic doing fluid service, brakes, exhaust, and the occasional bigger job, the four-post usually wins, and not for the reason people expect. It wins because it doubles as storage. You park the winter car under the summer car and reclaim half your floor. It’s also more forgiving to install — most four-posts don’t require anchoring in the same way a two-post does, and it doesn’t demand the same concrete spec, which matters if your slab is thin or unknown.

The tradeoff is underbody access. Runways sit under the tires, which is exactly where you don’t want them if you’re pulling a transmission or dropping an exhaust. That’s what a rolling jack bridge is for, and if you buy a four-post we’d tell you to buy the rolling jack at the same time — retrofitting later means matching runway width and rail profile, and it’s a common service call we get. A two-post gives you unobstructed access and a smaller footprint, but it needs verified concrete, proper anchor torque, and real overhead clearance. Neither answer is wrong. What’s wrong is buying whichever car lift automotive listing was cheapest that week without measuring the garage first. Installing and Commissioning a Used Lift

Once you’ve bought it, the commissioning matters as much as the purchase. We treat a used lift install as a rebuild-lite: new cables if there’s any doubt, fresh hydraulic fluid, filter or screen cleaned, new anchors on anything anchored, all locks adjusted and tested, and a full function test under load before anybody walks underneath. On a four-post we shim to level, then set cable tension by adjusting until all four corners lock simultaneously — that adjustment is what makes or breaks how the lift behaves for the next decade.

Concrete is worth a paragraph even for four-posts. Even where the lift isn’t through-bolted, the runways transfer real point loads through the base frames, and a thin slab over soft fill will crack and let the lift settle out of level. We drill test holes when the slab history is unknown. In older Iowa City garages we’ve found everything from a proper four-inch pour to two and a half inches over gravel. If yours is thin, the fix is usually a saw-cut and pour of pads under the base frames — a day’s work, not a rebuild. We also set expectations about the first ninety days: re-check cable tension after the first twenty cycles, re-torque anchors at thirty days, and re-inspect locks. Those three follow-ups catch nearly every early problem we see on a car lift automotive install, whether the equipment came from us new or off a trailer from three counties over.
